I can reproduce this bug on Ubuntu 12.10 (it was present in 12.04, too). Totem resets to the start of the playlist and freezes. All systems where I am able to reproduce this on have at least 2 processor cores, if that's of any use. Installing gstreamer0.10-plugins-base-dbg was no problem, of course. But I'm not 100% sure if I got the debug build of totem right... gdb started fine but after the crash it said it could not get any registers... Anyway, I got some strange effect that was not there before: some part of totem turned orange. Really weird. So I'll attach both, a little screenshot and the text file gdb produced... In case I screwed something: my architecture seems to be 386 according to the files in /boot. Strange enough since I got an Athlon64. Maybe the other file was not available when I downloaded Ubuntu? Does it happen if you click on the next button to reach the end of the playlist or do you need to play everything before? Could you get a backtrace: - run totem - while it's playing run gdb -p $(pidof totem) from a command line (gdb) continue ... get it freezing, then look at gdb. Freezing also works if I skip to the text file or if I open a folder that only contains a single text file and no mp3s at all. Do you use totem-gstreamer or totem-xine? Does it hang if you move the lyrics somewhere else? The most simple test case I could find that still gives an error: One folder containing a plain text file and a mp3 file. Using gstreamer Using totem-xine everything works fine (did not intend to rhyme :D) and a message pops up, telling me that it won't play text files. Reinstalled totem-gstreamer and the bug appears again. Of course I had to add the option Play with video player to my menu, it wasn't there from the beginning. My system might be more than a little off though things work most of the time. Got the mobo cheaper since it had been sent in and repared/replaced. With most distros I use cheatcodes like noapic acpi=off and so on. Some distros won't boot at all. (Thanks God ubuntu isn't such a b) My system contains an athlon64 (socket 754) on a MSI K8T Neo mobo with onboard sound, network and raid (just using ata hdd though). Last but not least I think I should be a little more specific concerning the shutdown problems: First only totem hangs and all other programs and desktops, including both taskbars or control panels or whatever they are called, remain usable. Then I click shutdown and both panels fail to respond from this point on. But programs on the desktop I currently work on remain usable. Also, if you can reproduce this, can you start totem in a terminal, and post the output just before it freezes, if any? Hi! First of all thanks for your reply! Maybe you'll get this mail twice since I had troubles with my account. I tried a few things and think I have found the error: I had a folder containing plain text files (lyrics) in some of my music folders and totem tried playing the text. So maybe it should be changed from bug report to feature request though it still somehow bothers me that the whole gui freezes when I ignore totem and try to shut down my pc. Totem 1.4.1 and Gstreamer 0.10.6 both according to the totem info button... The console only tells me that I killed totem which I already knew :D The rest of this mail was written BEFORE I found out about the problem with the text files. So it won't be of much interest anymore, I suppose. Anyway, I'll leave it here - just read it if you need any more specific pieces of information... - Now all the details - hope some of them matter ^^ I can reproduce the bug over and over again - works every time. Here's how to do it: I open nautilus, navigate to my music directory. Then I rightclick a folder containing mp3 files and select open with video player --Hope this is how it's called in the English menu, can't really tell since I'm only using the German version.-- So basically I'm just playing down this list of eight files - no repeat, no shuffle. At the end of the last track, the error happens. Moving the cursor over the totem window, it (the cursor) shows the busy symbol. I checked in various window layouts (none besides totem, up to totem completely covered with other windows) and it seems that only the top of the window (totem, minimize, maximize and close symbols) are redrawn and are quite snappy in their reactions - except close, of course, which takes several seconds to report that totem does not react. I've run totem from the console but all it tells me is that I killed it - well, of course I did since it froze and I don't want it to freeze my whole system when I try to shut down the computer without killing totem first. Also happened a couple of times. Notably only the GUI seems to be affected since ctrl-alt-del and the like still work when shutting down. Not sure if it has anything to do with the problem but I run totem on the first of my ten desktops directly after startup and then switch to desktop 2-10 depending on the number of programs I use. For this very reason I did not notice the first few freezes and tried to shutdown the pc. The other desktops and all other programs on desktop1 remain perfectly usable and responsive as long as I don't try to shut down my pc. Forgot to mention: the folder of music files also contains a folder of plain text files (lyrics). Totem (1.4.1) uses Gstreamer (0.10.6) both according to the totem info button...
