I upgraded from KDE 4.5 to 4.6 RC 2 (Kubuntu 10.10) and KDE splash screen updated automatically. I'm pretty sure that I didn't have this problem on 9.04 final anymore. But maybe the ksplahx theme simply hasn't changed for some time... Updating to KDE 4.5 Beta (fromm Kubuntu PPA Beta) was successfull, too. There have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem may have been fixed with some of the updates. It would help us a lot if you could test the current Ubuntu development version (10.10). The other thing I have noticed today is the screen just before the KDM
screen is probably the same screen as the screen which occurs if you are
logged multiple times (e.g. in another terminal) and you want to
restart/shut down the computer and asks you what to do with other logged
in users ("Abort active sessions" dialogue). This should be helpful for
debugging, the screen appears only for a short time at startup and it is
quite difficult to see over. (By the way, it looks quite strange that
there is an image like

Today I restarted X server (I did it by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Backspace in KDE and just after that by pressing Alt+E in KDM, I do not know which one of them took the effect) and the image on the background just before the KDM screen was updated and looks the same as the others. I have just updated KDE 4.4 RC1 to RC2 in Karmic from backport repositories and everything seems to work properly - there is the same new screen in ksplash after the KDM screen and even the same screen just before the KDM screen! Firstly, I thought the screen which appears just before the KDM screen in Karmic (this screen is NOT in previous versions) belongs also to ksplash, but it does not. I still do not know how to change it.
