[Bug 510443] Re: external usb hard drive unmounts and remounts automatically

2012-06-15 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
flint, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue?
Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images
are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the
development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal). It will automatically gather and
attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the
issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-
testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon
next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and
deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following
tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag:
'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not
boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.

[Bug 510443] Re: external usb hard drive unmounts and remounts automatically

2010-05-14 Thread lelamal
Hi, I think I've solved this issue, at least for me. It's rather silly,
and don't fully understand how it works, but actually it does, which is
all that matters.

I remembered I recently started switching the hard drive off at night,
so as to try speeding up booting the following morning, i.e. without the
system having to detect external devices in the process, and then to
switch it on after login. I wondered if that might be the reason of this
issue, and tried not to switch it off anymore. Well, the issue has gone
for over a month, and that's remarkable, considering the drive used to
unmount on a daily basis.

I don't know if it is going to help anybody, for in my case it seems it
was hardware-related, but anyway I wanted to share.

[Bug 510443] Re: external usb hard drive unmounts and remounts automatically

2010-04-12 Thread lelamal
I have further tested this issue with no luck, but can exclude the drive
is faulty. I can use it satisfactorily for any other purpose (watching
films, listening to music, transferring data, etc.) and it never
unmounts, not even when not downloading or downloading from aMule only.

This is what I attempted so far:
- It has an EXT4 file system, checked the disc for bad sectors, but the
remapping did not solve the issue.
- I removed from Transmission all shared torrents, so that users would download
only from the files I was also downloading, thus avoiding to heavily uploads to
numerous users connected to me.
- I've searched the forums, but it's a mess, and no precisely identifiable
pattern is to be found: some say it's a HD failure, some the electrical charge
to the USB port, etc. I changed USB port, swapping it with the 2nd external HD,
but still it's the one used by Transmission to unmount, so it's not the USB
port.
- I swapped the USB cables of the two hard-drives: if it was the cable, the HD
should have stopped unmounting by itself. But it didn't.

Also, one thing I noticed is that when I use the auto-remounted drive,
new files and folders are not found unless I hit refresh. And those
freshly deleted still are displayed, and if I try to access them then I
am presented with an error.

[Bug 510443] Re: external usb hard drive unmounts and remounts automatically

2010-03-23 Thread lelamal
Yeah, this is exactly what happens to me, too. Also, I sometimes use
aMule along with Transmission. When the drive unmounts, all active files
from both applications give an error message, and can't be reactivated
unless the programmes are restarted. When they're restarted, each file
must be reactivated manually, for they're all paused or stopped -
Transmission will verify all local data for those files. In the end,
though, I'm not sure what causes the issue, neither if the P2P apps are
the culprits here.
