I am having the same problem. It occurs consistently on boot-ups. I log off and log in again to have the wifi icon back. My system is stock sony vgn-fz140e. Wolfgang, I have that problem too, a few times. It gets fixed if I restart the notification area from the "Add to Panel" menu. I'm getting duplication on my system as well - if it were *only* duplication it wouldn't be horrible! The duplicate is displayed in lieu of another notification icon - today I have two sound icons and no network icon. More description on the bug: (I am using HP dv4-1540us.) Here's the typical scenario when this bug almost always affects the panel -- After removing AC power, I close the laptop lid (to suspend the OS) and then open the lid again after some time. That is when the power icon starts showing "on AC power" and refuses to detect the battery.
