1) compat level 4 *is* deprecated. That said, we try not to deviate from Debian for packages maintained in Debian except as required to fix specific bugs. Minor changes in order to "improve" the packaging are especially uninteresting, as they may require merging *every* cycle in the future for no significant end-user benefit. If you actually want to improve the state of the packaging, it would be better to coordinate directly with the Debian Maintainers to do so. 2) Reading those build logs, it appears to have failed when installing specific files, It's worth investigating why those files are no longer present: it may be an issue of some sort with the build. I suspect you'll either want to change the source to ensure the files are built, or change specific individual lines in the install files to not attempt to install them very build. Also, with the complete removal of these files, have you verified that the contents of the provided packages do not differ? 3) No worries. Just read the control file carefully. Thanks for the patch, which does indeed fix the build failure, but I'm unsure of the benefit of the remainder of the changes, specifically: 1) Why bump the compat level? What feature does this bring? Why is it required? 2) Why drop the entries in debian/install? How does this help the package? Having it present will ease the work of splitting the package once the API settles. 3) Why add section libs to the control file? The only built binary is libbuffy-devel, which is section: libdevel Please address these questions either with comments in this bug or with a revised debdiff (or a combination).
