If the -26 kernel should be the default kernel of Dapper.1, then yes, this should be a blocker, as this kernel is unusable for me and it seems quite some more people. If, however, the -25 kernel is default: Then go ahead with Dapper.1. I got a newer revision of the same kernel-image as it seemed to have been up-rev'd for the upcoming point release of Dapper. I believe this bug should be a show-stopper to the release of Dapper.1 as from what I have read above it will cause issues for all those with Via boards. I am sure many people will have waited for the point release before upgrading (for stability reasons) and to upgrade and get this kernel would be disastorous. When you can get past the login splash screen (as I frequently can) the PC is very sluggish, whilst the sounds are doing the repeating effect. If you leave the PC a while to finish repeating the noise, I find that most of the time I am able to play audio normally (i.e. watch TV, listen to MP3's, or adjust the Sound theme from System > Preferences > Sound). This indeed looks like a duplicate to bug#53207. I'm using a Jetway 625EMP800 motherboard on the system I have the problem with. Disabling sound for a particular user by taking that user out of the audio group keeps the repeated sound (and any sound!) from happening, but the drumming or repeated sound still happens when the login screen is up. I just updated from Breezy to Dapper and have come across this issue. The Dapper upgrade has installed the 2.6.15.26-386 kernel image and since then, the computer is almost unusable at initial bootup and the Ubuntu drums continually repeat. Once the repeating stops, the PC returns to normal performance (AFAIK), however, sound is now unusable. I have a VIA KM266Pro chipset with a VIA VT8235 South Bridge. Audio is all onboard. The motherboard user manual states the audio specifications as: - AC'97 Digital Audio Controller integrated, - AC'97 Audio CODEC on board. I am having what I think is the same problem with the latest kernel 2.6.15-26-386. Here is more information. It looks like similar hardware: Everything was working well with my Ubuntu 6.06 computer until the upgrade containing the new 2.6.15-26-386 kernel was installed. The boot up starts normally until the login screen comes up. Normally there is a short drum sound when the login screen opens but now the drum sound keeps going and going and going. After that point the computer is unusably slow. If at the grub screen I load the 2.6.15-25-386 kernel everything is fine.
