[Bug 526796] Re: No sound applet on the gnome panel

2011-07-29 Thread rew
For those that end up here with a google search...

My sound control applet disappeared one day. I managed without it for a
while, but today figured out how to get it back. The sound applet moved
to be a notification, so I need a notification area in my panel and
it shows up again.

[Bug 526796] Re: No sound applet on the gnome panel

2010-12-21 Thread SQeaky
This issue also affected me. I thought I removed just the messaging
applet (which I now know is just part of the indicator) and I
inadvertently removed the volume control. Later when I noticed the
volume control was missing, I tried searching in the Add to Panel
window for volume, mixer and sound. Any of these should have
brought up the indicator applet with a clear description of what it
does.

Also, an idea, if the Add to Panel window is empty because of a search
result, it should say something. Maybe Nothing was found matching
[whatever was typed].

To go along with that, each of the applets could have a long description
in addition to the short description they already have. If you click on
or highlight an applet it could expand to show the long description.
During a search if the list of matching applets is short enough to fit
in the window, they could all display their long description. That way
the in a situation like this, when someone searches for sound they
would see the long description of the indicator which would say stuff
about sound/volume control and what else the indicator does.

[Bug 526796] Re: No sound applet on the gnome panel

2010-11-07 Thread Zlobomir
Hello,
Just to confirm, my sound icon disappeared in the same way during a routine
daily update (not a distribution update). Fixed by adding an indicator as well.
Such default decisions are vry irritating for me. Same is with the
monitor auto-detect, which started somewhere in 9.04-10.04. I use a KVM switch
and if for some reason I forget to switch the LCD, I get an ugly resolution
later, panel icons displaced, etc. Not even to mention that my server runs with
a monitor on to be able to start the X server on auto-restart (I need Wine).

2010-10-14 Thread Will Chester
I had a similar problem. I installed Maverick, keeping my home directory
from Lucid, and after a short time my sound indicator and me menu
disappeared. I tried reconfiguring the indicator-sound and indicator-me
packages, with no success. Then I happened upon this page, which
described how to get the menus back. I'm not sure if this will fix
everyone's problems here, but it worked for me.

[Bug 526796] Re: No sound applet on the gnome panel

2010-05-05 Thread frotz
I don't see why there would be a need for this indicator applet.
Isn't there already a Notification Area for things like that? What if
I want to put the volume control somewhere completely different from the
other stuff that this indicator applet puts them? Maybe I just want the
volume control and nothing else. This new indicator applet doesn't
allow for that. Why can't stuff like this be done as an add-on instead
of yanking the rug out from under people who like things the way they
are?

[Bug 526796] Re: No sound applet on the gnome panel

2010-05-02 Thread daniel
I had the same issue, and it took me far longer than it should have to find
this solution.
I don't know how much mass-protest influences the powers that be, but I agree
100% with Cory and feel the need to echo his remarks -- I'm not using a laptop,
but the spacing is ridiculous and I've already set up email, chat, etc and will
never use that envelope. I should, at the very least, be allowed to choose not
to display certain icons, as I am with the bluetooth icon.

Also, one minor gripe: the rhythmbox icon used to show the Rhythmbox
window with a left click, and bring up a menu with a right click, which
I think is more intuitive, but obviously that could just be habit
talking. I do think that one should be able to hide the window through
the icon, without having to close the window manually.

And having both a notification area and an indicator applet seems redundant
to me, although I suppose that's just the names
given by separate developers, and doesn't affect usability.

Thanks for whatever help you can provide :)

[Bug 526796] Re: No sound applet on the gnome panel

2010-04-30 Thread Cory Davis
I'd really prefer separate applets for sound and battery and whatever
else is lumped into the indicator applet. For one, putting them in the
indicator applet is counter-intuitive. An indicator is for, well,
indicating things, not controlling them. If I'm looking for a volume
control, indicator is probably the absolute last place I'd look.

In addition, the icon-icon spacing in the indicator applet is huge and
unconfigurable, and the only way I've found to get rid of the envelope
icon (that I'll never use) is to remove indicator-messages completely.
I'm using a laptop with only the top panel, so real estate is at a
premium. I could easily fit three or even four launchers in the space
taken up by the two remaining icons on the indicator applet, or get
several more characters visible in the window list.

At the very least, provide the traditional separate applets as an option
for those that don't like the indicator. Between Ubuntu and Gnome, the
distribution seems to get less and less easily configurable/customizable
with each release. I'm all for making improvements, but removing UI
configurability is the easiest way to push people to a different
distribution. If I wanted to use someone else's vision of the One True
UI, I'd probably still be using windoze.

thank you for your bug report, did you upgrade or install lucid? did you
remove the indicator message applet in your configuration before? the
same applet is used for other indicators now

2010-02-23 Thread Joe_Linux
Also it's next to impossible to report a bug about it as there is no way
to report bugs regarding the Gnome panel at the top of the desktop.

[Bug 526796] Re: No sound applet on the gnome panel

2010-02-23 Thread Mitch Towner
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. You can submit a bug report regarding gnome-panel by
running ubuntu-bug -p gnome-panel (without the quotes) from a terminal
window. You can find more information at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs

@ Saïvann Carignan: This is not a duplicate of bug 526511. This bug
report is referring to there being no sound applet on the gnome-panel,
whereas bug 526511 states that there are 2 sound applets/ icons on the
gnome-panel.

[Bug 526796] Re: No sound applet on the gnome panel

2010-02-23 Thread Saïvann Carignan
Mitch Towner : I've followed lucid development, this is simply the
result of gnome-mixer applet which is currently being replaced. During
the first alpha, gnome mixer applet was there, after some updates there
was two applets and at the moment, there is no applet at all. I marked
this bug as a duplicate as the underlying cause is the same and applies
to all current lucid installations. Therefore, these bugs will be fixed
at the same time and surely before lucid final release, as it is a
obvious issue.
