I should add that I was trying to install winefish using synaptic when the tex-common error occurred. There was no error message for texlive- latex-base, but winefish simply didn't work. I was unable to install tex-common using synaptic with the default settings. I was able to get it installed once I added a line to /etc/apt/sources.list as suggested here: http://packages.ubuntu.com/lucid/all/texlive-base/download Unfortunately, texlive-latex-base also seems to not have installed. I've discovered that I can install everything from the command-line using apt-get without needing update-updmap. The error appears to be specific to using "Update Manager" and "Synaptic" (sorry I didn't mention Synaptic in the last comment). Even after installing some of texlive with apt-get, trying to add more through Synaptic (I tested texlive-science) produces the same error. Could you please open a terminal and run the following command sudo updmap --disable classicovn.map or simply sudo update-updmap This will regenerate the file /var/lib/texmf/web2c/updmap.cfg from the system configuration. Then try to reinstall texlive-base and tell if it helps.
