Not sure if this is related to the symbols issue, but after installing linux-backports-modules-alsa-2.6.32-23-generic, my internal microphone switches correctly, but inserting a logitech USB headset (which was detected properly before) results in the whole system locking up (can't even ctrl-alt-f1) but no kernel crash because I can still hear music playing until I power cycle the machine. I found some crash details in /var/log/messages (see attached). Just spoke to Stefan, he's added the thinkpad module to the backports package, so that package will provide an update thinkpad_acpi module that uses the newer snd_* symbol versions. Jerone, The messages that you see in dmesg indicate that the functions are present, but have a different symbol version magic. Could you let me know which kernel package version (are you using one of the DRM backport kernels?) and linux-backports-modules package version you have installed? @Jeremy Kerr There is a big issue with linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic in proposed. It breaks thinkpad-acpi. This is what we were discussing earlier. This testing was done on a T410. What this means: Any Thinkpad user cannot use linux-backports-modules-alsa- lucid-generic or they will loose a lot of functionality from their system. Thinkpad acpi is a critical part of the thinkpad experience Only ways to solve this: 1) Updates go into kernel source 2) dkms package just updating intel-hda driver (and not alsa .. as the one I have attached to this bug). 3) Turn off ALSA support in thinkpad-acpi in kernel. * It has no use on Lenovo Thinkpads .. and doesn't actually add any function (yet) for IBM based Thinkpads. I've attached the dmesg for when you install linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-generic from proposed. @wompy Can you file a seperate bug also post lspci -vvnn output. There most likely is a quirk need for your machine. hda-conexant-update-dkms_2.6.32.21_all.deb wouldn't have support for your machine. Hi there. I just installed the above conexant.deb workaround on a 2.6.33-realtime kernel manually upgraded to Alsa 1.0.23 ( with latest driver snapshot from Takashi Iwai) on a T60P. The Unkown symbol issue still exists. thinkpad-acpi just dies. Anything I can do? The community will appreciate it. And, I do have a strange feeling that thinkpad-acpi depends that strong on Alsa. Spoke to Jerone off-line, it sounds like the thinkpad_acpi symbol issue may have been particular to the build (symbol versioning), so l-b-m *should* be compatible with thinkpad_acpi once it comes out. Spoke to Stefan, he has an update pending for linux-backports-modules, which includes ALSA v1.0.23. @Jeremy First point is yes. Since thinkpad-acpi now links against alsa .. you can't update lbm to 1.0.23 as it will look for symbols not there and fail to load. Your on track. I've created a solution to get users working. I've updated the Intel hda alsa driver with conexant codec updates in latest alsa 1.0.23 tree. This is a solution until updates for the alsa intel hda driver can land into the 10.04 kernel tree. You'll need to install dkms before hand: sudo apt-get install dkms This package will get microphone jack working under 10.04 until an official update is released with the fix in it. Also to add this solution does not conflict with thinkpad-acpi. Note to kernel team: Since thinkpad-acpi now links to ALSA .. if a user uses alsa-backports it has alsa version 1.0.23 .. thinkpad-acpi module will break and not be able to load, since it is looking for symbols that are not there. So best not to use the dkms package as apparently there is a conflict with thinkpad-acpi module.
