Is the bug because this package replaces ubuntu-wallpapers less than a
certain version?

Is there any way this bug could be put in the One Hundred Paper Cuts
project for Natty in the Miscellaneous section? This should be
extremely trivial to solve and really damages a user's experience who
just wants to install more wallpapers.

Thanks.

[Bug 569202] Re: WhiteOrchid.jpg replaces warty-final-ubuntu.jpg as login wallpaper

2010-12-03 Thread Brett Alton
I don't understand how Debian packaging works, but a file called ubuntu-
wallpapers-extra.xml.in has WhiteOrchid.jpg at the top of the file, with
the rest listed below. So for some reason, something is setting the GDM
to WhiteOrchid.jpg because it's the first on the list (probably
something to do with the call from setup.cfg).

I'm positive this is a one line fix, I just can't find it because I
don't understand packaging at the moment.

[Bug 569202] Re: WhiteOrchid.jpg replaces warty-final-ubuntu.jpg as login wallpaper

2010-05-25 Thread K. Deniz Ogut
ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx

I can confirm this as well.

Story:

My brother-in-law had Ubuntu 9.10 - fresh installed by me; dual boot
with Windows XP. I web updated Ubuntu part of it to 10.04 Lucid. I
installed 3 or 4 additional wallpaper packages from the repositories -
one of them was ubuntu-wallpapers-extra. Lucid's original login
window's theme changed to a flower image. There were reports that
changing GDM is very hard after Ubuntu 9.10 -if it is not impossible. So
I didn't try much to alter it. I also didn't try to uninstall those
wallpaper packages one by one to check for the defective one. By eye
control I decided that the image is WhiteOrchid.jpg being among the
wallpapers. I removed WhiteOrchid.jpg from the wallpapers directory
(most probably it was /usr/share/backgrounds) and the background of the
login window became plain white (no theme, I mean). I copied
WhiteOrchid.jpg to that directory again. It reappeared as the login
window theme. I told my brother-in-law that he should use that for some
time, for some reason which is hard to tell.

I'm still on 9.10 Karmic but if developers ask for gathering info from
my brother-in-law's machine which we experienced the issue; I will be
happy do that.

[Bug 569202] Re: WhiteOrchid.jpg replaces warty-final-ubuntu.jpg as login wallpaper

2010-05-25 Thread K. Deniz Ogut
Addition to my comment #3

I think the guess of the original reporter (as repeated in comment #2) as
WhiteOrchid.jpg replaced warty-final-ubuntu.jpg (it should be .png, I
suppose) which is found in /usr/share/gconf/defaults/16_ubuntu-wallpapers is
not valid. I don't have the Lucid machine I confirmed the bug with me right now
but checking from my Ubuntu Karmic installation:
* My login screen was and is what Karmic default is which is obviously not the
warty-final-ubuntu.png image
* The first line of my /usr/share/gconf/defaults/16_ubuntu-wallpapers reads as:
/desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename
/usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png
* Even there's a reference to warty-final-ubuntu.png, which is indeed in
/usr/share/backgrounds, neither my login screen theme nor desktop background
have never been and is not at the moment warty-final-ubuntu.png image
* When I delete that line
/desktop/gnome/background/picture_filename
/usr/share/backgrounds/warty-final-ubuntu.png
from the file
/usr/share/gconf/defaults/16_ubuntu-wallpapers
and save the file and restart x; my login screen theme is still the Karmic
default; and my preferrred user-set desktop background is still the same
* I don't know if that line (or even that file completely) has any use but
seems that it is not related with the login screen theme
* In Lucid the image used for the login screen can be found in wallpaper
choises as well (actual source files may be different; images are similar/same)
but in Karmic the default login screen image is even not found as a desktop
background choice
* And I even don't know / can't find where that Karmic login screen image lies
and what the filename is
* As a result; Gnome login screen or its Ubuntu modification gets that image
from somewhere but not from /usr/share/gconf/defaults/16_ubuntu-wallpapers
* As I stated in comment #3 community have difficulties to modify the login
screen theme from Karmic on and its not that easy as to change a line in a file
lying in /usr/share/gconf/defaults. In my opinion its not good to hide such
files and preferences to some mysterious places and not to document them, but
this is beyond the scope of this bug
* As a result, what I confirm is: Installing that package changes the the login
screen theme to that image, as I said in comment #3
* In this sense, a modification for this bugs name maybe usefull, if the issue
has nothing to do with warty-final-ubuntu.jpg [.png ???]
