[Bug 588822] Re: r8192se_pci driver occasionally drops connection, refuses to work with some networks

2012-03-31 Thread Alex Wauck
This bug no longer seems to affect my machine (at least as of 11.10). I
don't know if the other people who commented here have had their
problems resolved, but they don't appear to have said anything about it
since August. I'd say it's safe to close this bug.

[Bug 588822] Re: r8192se_pci driver occasionally drops connection, refuses to work with some networks

2012-03-30 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Alex Wauck, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.
This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try
with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are
available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command from a
Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically
gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the
issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-
testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon
next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and
deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your
results.

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 588822] Re: r8192se_pci driver occasionally drops connection, refuses to work with some networks

2011-06-28 Thread Jose Marquez
I received drivers from Realtek today that seem to fix this problem for
me. Stable connection so far without having to resort to the 3.0 kernel.
I posted the drivers here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=10989459&postcount=135

Go to page 14 of that thread for context, but it seems that the only
issue with those drivers is some kind of conflict with conky. Also, the
makefile creates three driver modules; I edited it to only have it build
the rtl8192se driver module (note the name change), and I disabled the
r8192se_pci module before running any of the make commands.

[Bug 588822] Re: r8192se_pci driver occasionally drops connection, refuses to work with some networks

2011-06-28 Thread Jose Marquez
The 3.0 release candidate 4 kernel worked for me (from Mainline Kernel
Builds), as above. 9 hours so far, stable connection on Kubuntu 11.04,
connecting to a WPA2-PSK AP. I've got the Realtek 8191SE chipset in a
Toshiba Satellite A500. So this seems fixed for Oneiric. Going to try
drivers Realtek just sent me (newer than the December 2010 drivers on
their site) with the stock 11.04 2.6.38 kernel.

The kernel below for me works

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/daily/2011-06-02-oneiric/

i.e. 3.0.0-999-generic

The driver being used here is rtl8192se, and the stability issues I had
are now gone, will test for a few more days and see how it goes

OK, tried the mainline kernel, and no luck at all

Tried the following
* 2.6.38.7-natty
* 2.6.39-rc4-natty

neither of these have the r8192se_pci

I tried the other drivers such as the rtlwifi and others that were
there, but I got no wifi at all

I have this issue as well. Ubuntu 10.10 x86_64

r8192se_pci modules

RTL8191SEvB Wireless LAN Controller (rev 10)

As a workaround, I had to write a script that removes the module,
modprobes it, kills Network Manager and brings the network interface:

#!/bin/sh
# fix_wireless.sh

int=`ifconfig | grep wlan | awk '{print $1}'`

modprobe -r r8192se_pci
modprobe r8192se_pci hwwep=0
kill -9 `pidof NetworkManager`
ifconfig $int up
iwconfig $int key 10293847565647382910123456 essid "Grendel Cluster"
timeout 10 dhclient $int
if timeout 5 ping -c 1 google.com
then echo "\033[33;3;148mConnected\033[39m"
else sh fix_wireless.sh
fi

I am having this problem also, on a Compaq Presario CQ62-219WM. The
problem has gotten worse after I upgraded to the Natty alpha. This
thread on the forums describes my situation:

Someone there suggests tweaking the power saving settings. I am not sure
what the consequences of that would be though.
