are you sure just restarting the lirc-daemon doesn't help? At least when vdr connects to lircd the daemos quits when it can't find /dev/lirc. Oops, sorry i forgotten this bugreport... So, thanks to pointing me to the sysylog, it's how you said...in fact the DEVICE="" parameter in hardware.conf wasn't set correctly to /dev/ttyS0 and the daemon quits. But why dpkg-reconfigure is able to find the correct device and restarting the daemon don't find it ?
