[Bug 613809] Re: Rhythmbox FM plug-in, tvtime and gnomeradio NO SOUND, no /dev/mixer present
Hello pablo, for gnome radio it's maybe a solution. But even then it's to processor intensif. For tv card itself it's a pain in the ass since there is a delay between image and sound. Off course i do not route out the sound to /dev/dsp in tv time. the only control we used was the /dev/mixer emu to untoggle the specified alsa mixer channel and change volume. My tv time card is connected to CD in from motherboard. Some connect it to line in by absence from other inputs. Then we don't have delay between image and sound and are not using (spoiling) valuable processor time. Sound can also be untoggled using alsa mixer. Or even better gnome- alsamixer. Another option off course is the use of loopback into pulse, But since pulse does not support my sound card how it should be and there is no way to solve that. I do it straight trough alsa. On top of it you can't mixed several loopback inputs togheter with pulse Yes Pulse is very very far from complete. Note: most new software use direct input into alsa . Tvtime and gnome radio are not under developpemnt anymore. For tv time there is a patch made to use direct hw:0:Line or CD instead of passing trough /dev/mixer . But I still did not found this patched version compiled for amd64 or the latest modified source to compile this myself. It seems to be called tvtime version 1.0.2-8sr... in ubuntu there is still version 1.0.2-6. gr christophe -- Rhythmbox FM plug-in, tvtime and gnomeradio NO SOUND, no /dev/mixer present https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/613809 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Hello, I dont know if that will help anyone but i found that in my case, even with connected TV Card and line in with a sound card i had no sound. Found out that i just didnt have a loopback module loaded. After loading it : http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=8308073postcount=3 I still get a warning about no mixer and cant use volume control in programs but have sound. [Bug 613809] Re: Rhythmbox FM plug-in, tvtime and gnomeradio NO SOUND, no /dev/mixer present
hello , Thank's for joining. The problem is that the developpers from sound section, Dissabled all oss emulation into kernel. This because they try (and this is not easy) to let work everyrhing true pulse audio oss. Many persons already informed them that : 1) Pulse audio does not support many (even a majority) off HDA audio card's and there is no way to work around that by adding extra settings. This already causes bugs from start with the alsa-mixer which is required to let the audio work on HDA cards. 2) Alsa has the nice utility to give a line like: options snd-hda-intel model=asus-p5q (for me ) that asus may be a lot of cards depending which you have. In to /etc/modprobe.d/ alsa-base.conf Pulse audio disregard this setting and only uses the basic probed bios settings at boot time, since info from bios is limited, the wrong versions of audio card is selected leaving you with missing mixer inputs . Even worse wrong mixer handling are sometimes a result of this. So long thet pulse audio is not further developped to support ALL audio card's Many users will be left without goud working sound. The only remaining option we have now, is to download the latest patched ubuntu kernel source, reconfigure the kernel to include oss sound core and alsa oss emu pcm, mixer, sequencer. And compile it ourself. This does work out very well. For me the compilation of linux kernel takes about 01:10 Hr . So yes When maverick will come's out and they leave it like that, Many (if not the most) users using a lot of multimedia sound applications on ubuntu will have NOTHING. The basic linux kernel IS NOT MADE TO WORK like they do for 10.10. It is not for nothing that oss-snd core is included into the kernel. Al complains aubout this are falling into deaf ears, and answer's on the question to include it again are simply NO Without any argument, That's it -- Rhythmbox FM plug-in, tvtime and gnomeradio NO SOUND, no /dev/mixer present https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/613809 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

And because of this, tvtime doesn't produce sound and I can't watch TV. Solution is: 1. recompile kernel 2. connect tv card sound output to sound card input Is there an easier solution? Hello, Yes the solution is there, I already asked to reinclude oss core and oss emu end needed modules. The answer i received just coldly NO ! read this bug at : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/579300 You see they asked to do it AND CREATED AN NOT COVERABLE BUG (NO WORK AROUND POSSIBLE) except recompiling your own kernel. [Bug 613809] Re: Rhythmbox FM plug-in, tvtime and gnomeradio NO SOUND, no /dev/mixer present
About this last bug no /dev/mixer and so, I now found out That kernel 2.6.35.21-generic config gives CONFIG_SOUND=m # CONFIG_SOUND_OSS_CORE is not set CONFIG_SND=m CONFIG_SND_TIMER=m CONFIG_SND_PCM=m CONFIG_SND_HWDEP=m CONFIG_SND_RAWMIDI=m CONFIG_SND_JACK=y CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER=m CONFIG_SND_SEQ_DUMMY=m # CONFIG_SND_MIXER_OSS is not set # CONFIG_SND_PCM_OSS is not set # CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER_OSS is not set So indeed oss emu not enabled. So just for test I took the linux kernel source 2.6.35.21 (the patched for ubuntu) Used the original 2.6.35.21 config file but just enabled the oss support into it. Then I compiled this with fakeroot, The result now CONFIG_SOUND=m CONFIG_SOUND_OSS_CORE=y CONFIG_SOUND_OSS_CORE_PRECLAIM=y CONFIG_SND=m CONFIG_SND_TIMER=m CONFIG_SND_PCM=m CONFIG_SND_HWDEP=m CONFIG_SND_RAWMIDI=m CONFIG_SND_JACK=y CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER=m CONFIG_SND_SEQ_DUMMY=m CONFIG_SND_OSSEMUL=y CONFIG_SND_MIXER_OSS=m CONFIG_SND_PCM_OSS=m CONFIG_SND_PCM_OSS_PLUGINS=y CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER_OSS=y And yes it all runs fine. So the only thing which has to be done is enbale the oss into the next maverick generic kernel upgrade and this bug is SOLVED -- Rhythmbox FM plug-in, tvtime and gnomeradio NO SOUND, no /dev/mixer present https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/613809 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 613809] Re: Rhythmbox FM plug-in, tvtime and gnomeradio NO SOUND, no /dev/mixer present
I'm affected from this bug as well, But since ubuntu uses the new volume control almost al audio went tremendiously down. Almost ALL multimedia applications are affected. Since 9.10 ubuntu : Does NOT DETECT ANYMORE THE Correct codes for HDA INTEL AUDIO. Only a pure very poor unsatisfactory basic settings wich often even not work at all when Motherboards are using all of many possible channels from chipsets. Example realteck 889A into asus or gigabyte Mb not supported. A work around possible is with sound options finding the correct settings for your audio card config and put them into alsa-base.conf located into /etc/modprobe.d the rule = options snd-hda-intel model= xxx where xxx is your card. But most codecs are not present. At the end you can find a setting wich is te best for you but it take a couple af days. Testing. On top of it the basic volume control does not recognize this settings and only and only use the basic unusable and unsatisfactory settings and there is no way or work around possible. With alsa mixer you can let it work at the end, But a lot off conflicts are happening. I was hoping that Maverick would again improve and correct such stuff but still it's just the opposed, now almost NOTHING works anymore. Even the real needed oss simulations are all away. IF multimedia is realy important like by me ubuntu is only good up to 9.04 as from 9.10 it's a pain in the ash . And things get worser the higher ubuntu version is. All good programs like for example tvtime do not work anymore. Unless your apply many many patches and work arounds. But as long ubuntu DOES NOT ADAPT THE BASIC VOLUME CONTROL to recognize and use the correct codecs OR AT LEAST MAKE A WAY TO force a certain codecs use it wil NEVER WORK GOOD. So ubuntu without the need of good audio is very good. But if you need audio ubuntu just SUCKS . None off the bugs concerning audio are treated and if there is a change it just is worse. -- Rhythmbox FM plug-in, tvtime and gnomeradio NO SOUND, no /dev/mixer present https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/613809 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
