[Bug 625395] Re: [Maverick] ~30s boot pause
I have just started having this problem after doing an "apt-get autoremove" on my Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit system (Acer timelinex 3820TG with the dual GPU "switchable graphics"). Here's what my dmesg looks like: [1.688349] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Attached SCSI disk [1.799582] hub 2-1:1.0: USB hub found [1.799791] hub 2-1:1.0: 8 ports detected [2.075196] usb 2-1.5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 3 [2.597199] EXT4-fs (sda7): mounted filesystem with ordered data mode. Opts: (null) [ 42.726500] udev[444]: starting version 163 [ 42.738288] lp: driver loaded but no devices found [ 42.802317] intel ips :00:1f.6: Warning: CPU TDP doesn't match expected value (found 25, expected 35) [ 42.802341] alloc irq_desc for 18 on node -1 [ 42.802344] alloc kstat_irqs on node -1 [ 42.802357] intel ips :00:1f.6: PCI INT C -> GSI 18 (level, low) -> IRQ 18 [ 42.802521] intel ips :00:1f.6: failed to get i915 symbols, graphics turbo disabled So a full 40-second delay. All the while the hard drive churns away, and the cursor blinks on the screen; then an error message flashes up too quickly to read and then the plymouth splash screen appears. The hard drive churning and the mounted filesystem notice make me wonder if it's related to the disk mount. Must be some package I removed; if I can figure out which one it was, might help to locate this problem. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/625395 Title: [Maverick] ~30s boot pause -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 625395] Re: [Maverick] ~30s boot pause
I spoke to soon, with the new mouse/Unifying Receiver, it not only hangs (sometimes?), but locks up the keyboard so that I can't press Escape and continue booting. Put the old mouse back on. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/625395 Title: [Maverick] ~30s boot pause -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 625395] Re: [Maverick] ~30s boot pause
The mouse on this system (per comments above), a Microsoft USB "Basic Optical Mouse", was replaced with a Logitech Wireless M505 (which uses the Logitech Unifying USB receiver) and now exhibits a new behaviour: the system still hangs on boot-up but as soon as the mouse is moved the system continues booting (no Escape key presses are needed). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/625395 Title: [Maverick] ~30s boot pause -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 625395] Re: [Maverick] ~30s boot pause
This morning I booted kernel 2.6.35-25 in Maverick and pressed the Escape key 4 times (varies, see above) to continue the boot. I waited approximately 20 to 30 seconds after each "hang" before pressing Escape again. Here is the interesting part of the dmesg for this boot attempt: [4.342743] hub 1-3.4.1:1.0: USB hub found [4.342852] hub 1-3.4.1:1.0: 4 ports detected [4.428607] usb 1-3.4.4: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 8 [ 10.265435] REISERFS (device sda1): replayed 643 transactions in 7 seconds [ 10.265787] REISERFS (device sda1): Using r5 hash to sort names [ 11.648925] udev[438]: starting version 163 [ 38.301359] Adding 7999484k swap on /dev/sda2. Hi Billstei - can you include a full dmesg from your boot, and maybe some details of your hardware? [Bug 625395] Re: [Maverick] ~30s boot pause
I am also seeing long pauses on boot-up of Maverick (and Lucid was doing it too, before the upgrade), and I use the escape key to continue, however the number of times I press the escape key varies distinctly from 1 to 6 times, so this is probably a race condition. There is usually a dmesg entry right before (or very nearly before) the pause like: [8.085519] udev[446]: starting version 163 -- [Maverick] ~30s boot pause https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/625395 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
