[Bug 6289] Re: hibernate/suspend on Dell Inspiron 5150
I can confirm this bug still exists in the latest Mavrick verson 10.10 (Beta). My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 600m. Following the steps on this page to try and debug the problem: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend After suspend succeeded but failed to resume (hard drive and fans restart), I power-cycled and recovered this from the dmesg: ... [Bug 6289] Re: hibernate/suspend on Dell Inspiron 5150
I am using a Dell Inspiron 600m laptop, graphics card is ATI Mobility Radeon 9000. Hibernate and thaw works. Suspend works, but screen does not turn on upon resume - this is the bug I am reporting. How to reproduce the bug: 1. At a terminal, type: sudo pm-suspend. Laptop goes into suspend, power indicator fades on and off, which is a normal indication of suspend. 2. Press the power button to attempt a resume. Laptop power indicator turns on, hard disk activity indicator flashes once. Laptop fan turns on. Screen does not turn on - i.e. neither the backlight nor the LCD turns on. 3. At this point when the screen did not turn on. I pressed the Caps Lock and Num Lock keys, but neither the Caps Lock nor Num Lock indicators turned on. I tried Ctrl-Alt-F1 to F7, nothing happened. Ctrl-Alt-Del, nothing happened. I pressed and held the power button for about 10 seconds, and the system reset. Workaround: I went to the BIOS and set a primary password. This password would be required upon bootup before getting to the GRUB2 screen. When there was a password set, resuming would cause the screen to turn on and the laptop to request for the password. Upon entering the correct password, the desktop would be shown and everything would function as normal. What did not work: I tried this command to suspend it, but it did not cause the screen to turn on. Symptoms were the same as before: sudo pm-suspend --quirk-s3-bios --quirk-s3-mode --quirk-dpms-on --quirk-vbe-post --quirk-vbestate-restore (The command was suggested by https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/pm-utils/+bug/417599 ) Other information: I followed the steps on this page to try and debug the problem: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend These were the relevant lines I got from dmesg: [0.547638] Magic number: 0:53:725 [0.547642] hash matches /build/buildd/linux-2.6.32/drivers/base/power/main.c:433 [0.547667] block loop5: hash matches [0.547739] pci :01:00.0: hash matches [0.547812] rtc_cmos 00:06: setting system clock to 2048-05-07 08:42:44 UTC (2472453764) [0.547817] BIOS EDD facility v0.16 2004-Jun-25, 0 devices found So the problem was with PCI device :01:00.0. Looking at lspci, this was the problematic device: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV250 [Mobility FireGL 9000] (rev 02) Hope the above helps. -- hibernate/suspend on Dell Inspiron 5150 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/6289 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 6289] Re: hibernate/suspend on Dell Inspiron 5150
Suspend in Lucid (10.04) does not work out of the box, either, on my Dell Inspiron 5150. Same hardware as in #12. I got suspend working through the following steps. First, the graphics card (01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34M [GeForce FX Go5200 64M] (rev a1)): 1. Add the following line to /etc/X11/xorg.conf, Device section, using the nvidia-173 driver: Option NvAGP 1 2. Add the following lines to the file /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf: blacklist intel_agp blacklist agpgart 3. Remove compiz packages or set System Preferences Appearance Visual Effects None (bug #225858) My WLAN card is a Dell TrueMobile 5150 mini-pci card (orinoco_cs driver). To get the card working: 4. sudo dpkg-divert --rename /lib/firmware/agere_sta_fw.bin (see https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/498336/comments/86 ) 5. Create /etc/pm/config.d/suspend with the following content (not sure if all are needed): SUSPEND_MODULES=orinoco orinoco_cs yenta_socket 6. Create /etc/pm/sleep.d/10_kenny_inspiron_5150 with the following content #!/bin/sh case $1 in suspend) [ -x /sbin/pccardctl ] /sbin/pccardctl eject ;; resume) [ -x /usr/bin/setpci ] /usr/bin/setpci -s 00:1f.0 bb.b=0a ;; esac and run: chmod +x /etc/pm/sleep.d/10_kenny_inspiron_5150 7. The setpci stuff in the previous item was to make the power button, lid switch and Fn-Esc (suspend) work (see http://www.tedfelix.com/linux /Linux-Inspiron-5150.html ). To make this also work before the first suspend, add the line [ -x /usr/bin/setpci ] /usr/bin/setpci -s 00:1f.0 bb.b=0a to /etc/rc.local before the exit 0 line. -- hibernate/suspend on Dell Inspiron 5150 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/6289 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 6289] Re: hibernate/suspend on Dell Inspiron 5150
If you have a recent graphics card, it is probably PCI express, NOT agp! So set NvAGP 0. In my case, I also blacklisted the modules intel_agp and agpgart in /etc/modules/blacklist so that these modules don't get loaded automatically. [Bug 6289] Re: hibernate/suspend on Dell Inspiron 5150
Hello, Is this still an issue in current versions of Ubuntu? If so, it probably needs to be reassigned to another package than this, since acpi-support is not involved in the current suspend process. ** Changed in: acpi-support (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Incomplete -- hibernate/suspend on Dell Inspiron 5150 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/6289 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is a direct subscriber. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 6289] Re: hibernate/suspend on Dell Inspiron 5150
Suspend to ram works for me out-of-the-box with my HP dv9000t. Hibernate, however, will not poweroff my computer (it hangs with a dark screen, all LEDs on). My laptop has a PCI-Express video card. So I added the following two lines to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist blacklist intel_agp blacklist agpgart Also, in the device section of my xorg.conf, I added: Option NvAGP 0 Do this and try hibernating now. If it doesn't work, here is the weird part: keep the settings above and run glxgears on a xterm for about 15 seconds, before trying to hibernate. I guess this may initialize some junk in the nvidia module. After doing this, my system powers off after I click on hibernate. Sometimes it reboots instead of powering off. I'm going to try uswsusp now and see if there is any difference. This thing with glxgears affecting hibernate makes me wonder if those people reporting working hibernate are also beryl/compiz users.
