[Bug 634701] Re: mutter restarts on closing almost any application (xterm not included)
The version of Unity in Ubuntu-10.10 is not being developed anymore. In Ubuntu-11.04 unity was a complete re-write. If you face this problem in Ubuntu-11.04 please report a new bug using the crash window. ** Changed in: unity Assignee: Jason Smith (jassmith) = Omer Akram (om26er) ** Changed in: unity Assignee: Omer Akram (om26er) = (unassigned) ** Changed in: unity (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged = Won't Fix ** Changed in: unity Status: Triaged = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/634701 Title: mutter restarts on closing almost any application (xterm not included) -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 634701] Re: mutter restarts on closing almost any application (xterm not included)
Adding to what Martin Zackrisson said, every time I close Firefox with no other window open mutter seems to go blank. If I have another window open this problem doesn't happen. If the other windows minimized first, the problem occurs. I can get mutter/unity back by pressing ctrl+alt+T and launching the terminal when I have the blank screen with only a mouse cursor. So it definitely seems related to widows,,,hop that is helpful. Let me know if I can be more clear. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/634701 Title: mutter restarts on closing almost any application (xterm not included) -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I'd say that it seems especially tied to when mutter has no window to pass on focus to. [Bug 634701] Re: mutter restarts on closing almost any application (xterm not included)
This appears to still be a work in progress - but it is in progress, so hopefully we see a fix soon. As for the auto-hide, that was mentioned a month or more ago during testing, and it's been wish-listed for the next version (11.04). The Mutter crashes were a lot more frequent before, so this bug has been at least partly fixed. The remaining trouble-makers seem to be programs like Firefox and Thunderbird that don't have their menus in the top panel. Right now the crashes do not happen every time, although they do seem to be more likely when there are multiple windows open. -- mutter restarts on closing almost any application (xterm not included) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/634701 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I can reproduce the crasher too with GV under Mutter + Unity. I can't reproduce the same crasher when running Mutter in a desktop session. So there is something specific to Unity. [Bug 634701] Re: mutter restarts on closing almost any application (xterm not included)
I can reproduce this using the appmenus File-Quit every time. It seems to happen because the window is sent a close event outside of Mutter knowing about it and that leaves mutter in a bad state. It ends up getting a bad window error and then calls abort () because of that (which might be a bit too harsh, in this case). -- mutter restarts on closing almost any application (xterm not included) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/634701 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 634701] Re: mutter restarts on closing almost any application (xterm not included)
After an update today, the situation is different. There are no more restarts of mutter, but the entire display becomes blank except for mouse pointer. See bug report #638662 for details. Also unity crashes https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/638664 with arbitrary mouse clicks(since I cannot see what is there) -- mutter restarts on closing almost any application (xterm not included) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/634701 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Thanks for reporting this bug and help to make ubuntu better, Are you running mutter in your GNOME session, unity in the UNE session or gnome-shell? -- mutter restarts on closing almost any application (xterm not included) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/634701 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Can you please trying to install the debug package for mutter libunity and get a backtrace as described in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Backtrace and https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProgramCrash? Re: [Bug 634701] Re: mutter restarts on closing almost any application (xterm not included)
Sorry for the late reply. I am running in UNE session most of the time. Once in a while I log into to gnome session for 5 min or so. One problem I noticed is that once I log on to gnome session, the old style menu bar comes along the unity bar. I have to remove the conf files to get it disappear. This need to be somehow taken care of as well. But I still have not found any reason to link the gnome-session log ons and the crashes. It is our duty to help ubuntu make better. We should be thanking you guys left and right. I am a long time debian user, I still prefer to use debian, but I am using ubuntu now so that I can try to do something to the community. This one is the gdb trace after installing dbgsym for unity packages. No dbgsym for mutter yet. Also to add that if a program is started from terminal, its closure sometimes results in the crash of terminal also.
