Problem solved after upgrading to console-setup (1.7ubuntu19). I have installed kubuntu on a new machine. The bug was not present at the beginning but appeared after a few reboot. I had always appended the following option in the "kernel" line of /boot/grub/menu.lst: vga=791 After removing this option the bug disappeared (this also happened on another machine). I have also noted that when the bug is present the tty fonts are *not* the same as they are without the bug. Without the bug the fonts are like in dapper, but some programs like 'mc' look strange and garbled. Yes, moving S13kdm to S99kdm also works on my system. This is because I can see for a moment the TTY1 console before the kdm login screen. I have a workaround now: cd /etc/rc2.d/ mv S13kdm S99kdm After this I've not seen this phenomenon again. However it's sad the kdm won't start early as before the workaround. I just installed gdm to check is this problem kdm related or not. I realized gdm is not affected. I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 and it shows the same behaviour, it fills with asterisks the input fields. Now I have the same behaviour on a notebook that did not show that issue until todays update of... (I don't know, it was to much to narrow it down to a certain package, but I think today was no kdm update in apt. Same problem here. I can type in a few characters of the password and then the box gets filled with asterisks. I have to switch to tty1 then in order to restart kdm. Yes, I have the same problem. It's not so fun to switch to TTY1, then switch back to kdm if I want to login.
