Understood Steve, and I'm sorry that we haven't been able to help you with this. Because mysql-cluster-7.0 is in universe in lucid, the Ubuntu project's support for it is minimal. If the community has a fix, we'll certainly put it through the normal stable update process, but we aren't actively seeking to make sure all bugs are fixed. um... but lucid is still in LTS, and this problem is still present there. It doesn't particularly matter to me whether this bug exists in precise, especially since if there is no mysql-cluster package in precise, I won't be deploying precise for this application. The conflict/provides doesn't solve the entire problem. Lots of packages depend on specific versions of libmysqlclient16, eg nagios-plugins-standard.
