[Bug 660989] Re: maverick: omnibook kernel module is defective, causes crash and fails to load - laptop media keys don't work (e.g. on XE3)

2012-04-08 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Hans-Juergen Mauser, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better. Maverick reached EOL on April 2012.
Please see this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases

We were wondering if this is still an issue in a supported release? If
so, can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD
images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in a
supported release from a Terminal (Applications-Accessories-Terminal).
It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to
this report.

apport-collect -p linux replace-with-bug-number

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would
be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the
issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once
you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-
testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon
next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and
deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your
results.

Thanks in advance.

[Bug 660989] Re: maverick: omnibook kernel module is defective, causes crash and fails to load - laptop media keys don't work (e.g. on XE3)

2010-11-12 Thread Hans-Juergen Mauser
Changed my system due to power management and PCMCIA hotplug issues to
the mailnline kernel 2.6.36 and tried to compile the module from the
head source at http://omnibook.sourceforge.net - it compiles
successfully, but gives the same kind of error when attempting to load
it.

Some comments on the net say that the problem started with kernel 2.6.33
or 2.6.34 and that it could be related to the GCC version, 4.4 or 4.5. I
tried both GCC versions (4.4.5 as the sub version of 4.4) and none
succeeded. Also tried GCC 4.3, but this version does not compile the
current source code because of other errors.

Still could try to downgrade 4.4 to an older sub revision, maybe this
works - I'll try it if I have the time.

At least we can see that it is not a pure maverick kernel problem.

Tested on maverick with kernel from Lucid (2.6.32) and it worked well.
So something must have gone wrong with the kernel in maverick.

Exactly this is what I can confirm, and NONE of the maverick kernels
works yet, not even the most recent from maverick-proposed.
