[Bug 680418] Re: vlc scaling down CPU speed
Update: from several weeks that I have been trying to find a solution on this. - New Kernel doesn't work (latest kernel from Ubuntu repository) - I thought the problem came from pulseaudio, so I removed it and used Alsa instead. The bug still occurs. - "CE: hpet increased min_delta_ns" happens most of the time when the system hangs, and I use "dmesg" command. - trying to disable hpet (use hpet=disable in Grub) doesn't work. Also changed laptop's clocksource to acpi_pm doesn't work either. (my machine only have 2 clocksources : hpet, acpi_pm) - VLC actually does not involve in the bug, but Adobe Flash might - restarting the machine quickly after the crashes does not reset the problem. when the system came back, CPU is still slow. I have to wait awhile anyway to get the CPU frequency comes back up. - Re-install with Ubuntu 10.10 32bit version, still happens. - I currently moved to Linux Mint 10, with Kernel 2.6.35-22. The problem still occurs. My way to reproduce the bug is playing several Flash VDO at the same time (like playing different tabs of youtube in Chrome) or One divx vdo on VLC and one youtube vdo. While the CPU load, memory, caches are rising up, the CPU frequency will be going down. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/680418 Title: vlc scaling down CPU speed -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 680418] Re: vlc scaling down CPU speed
I have been using the using the newer kernels (than 2.6.35-22) for awhile, and I've never got the same problem ever since. I think I should close this thread. ** Tags removed: needs-upstream-testing -- vlc scaling down CPU speed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/680418 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 680418] Re: vlc scaling down CPU speed
Hi Phitchayaphong, If you could also please test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance. [This is an automated message. [Bug 680418] Re: vlc scaling down CPU speed
The problem is, I always set it to performance which runs at 2.40GHz when it's normal condition. But whenever it happens, even it was set to "Performance", the speed went down to 800MHz and I couldn't do anything to change it back. I tried many times to change it to specific speed at 2.4GHz but it immediately set it back to 800 MHz by itself. Recently I have been trying to reproduce the bug again, but I didn't success. It seems like when I try to catch it, it's gone. -- vlc scaling down CPU speed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/680418 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 680418] Re: vlc scaling down CPU speed
The Core 2 Duo has one clock domain, which means that both cores run at the same speed. The highest speed will be used if you select different speed for each core. It could be a bug in the applet. You may set and check the speed directly. -- vlc scaling down CPU speed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/680418 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 680418] Re: vlc scaling down CPU speed
Thank for the reply, I have this cpu. Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T8300 @ 2.40GHz Lately, I always use the performance governor. But when it happens, even I select the CPU speed by myself (using cpu-freq-applet), it automatically moves down to 800MHz Is it possible that the cause is from the applet? Because I don't have other program running with super-user privilege. -- vlc scaling down CPU speed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/680418 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 680418] Re: vlc scaling down CPU speed
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The ondemand governor is responsible for detecting the system load and selecting the appropriate frequency. Therefore it's not a bug in VLC, but a bug in the ondemand governor. I am going to change the affected package from vlc to linux. Which processor series do you have (AMD Athlon, AMD Phenom, Intel Core 2 Duo, Intel Core i)? A workaround should be to select a different governor like the performance governor. The question is why the performance governor doesn't work for you. ** Package changed: vlc (Ubuntu) => linux (Ubuntu) -- vlc scaling down CPU speed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/680418 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
