[Bug 73275] Re: P-M high idle CPU usage, reported as fixed, persists in edgy
I can confirm that this issue seems to be fixed since gutsy (generic kernel). I also tested the current hardy alpha5 (generic kernel 2.6.24-10) and couldn't notice any problems in regard to the described issue. Problem seems to be under control since Gutsy released. Have not tried any released of Hardy. I am running the generic kernel with a normal CPU work load... anybody want to confirm this? [Bug 73275] Re: P-M high idle CPU usage, reported as fixed, persists in edgy
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Hardy Heron. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at [WWW] http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your help. ** Changed in: linux-source-2.6.17 (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) => Wousser (wousser) Status: New => Incomplete -- P-M high idle CPU usage, reported as fixed, persists in edgy https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/73275 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 73275] Re: P-M high idle CPU usage, reported as fixed, persists in edgy
Thank you hardyn for your reply! I thought that the generic kernel would be the only one in feisty! But after your reply I started feisty (testing partition) and saw in synaptic that the 386 kernel isn't a link to the generic kernel! And I have to say that the 386 kernel works great (like the 386 in edgy)! I don't have a problem if the generic kernel is not fixed (as long as I have a good alternative)! -- P-M high idle CPU usage, reported as fixed, persists in edgy https://launchpad.net/bugs/73275 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 73275] Re: P-M high idle CPU usage, reported as fixed, persists in edgy
i spoke to ben collins about this (kernel guy), and apparently the i386 kernel in feisty has been upgraded to have uni-processor generic cpu support, thus virtully the same kernel as the default "generic" kernel with an expected performace loss of about 1%. I suspect that this problem will not be chased, and this new i386 has been provided as the solution to such problems. With this problem, seeming being isolated to Asus and Sony PM notebooks, i sure they will just let the problem disappear into obsolecence. (the M6a and FS might even be the same notebook, i know that Asus is an OEM to many notebook manufacturers) -- P-M high idle CPU usage, reported as fixed, persists in edgy https://launchpad.net/bugs/73275 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 73275] Re: P-M high idle CPU usage, reported as fixed, persists in edgy
Same Problem here! My Notebook: Sony Vaio VGN-FS215B Kernel: generic Setting cstate value to 2 solves the problem! Now i am using 386 kernel without problems. Does someone work on this? Yesterday I tried feisty herd2 => same "high cpu usage idle" problem, but setting cstate 2 doesn't solve this anymore!!! what can we still do that someone worries about this problem? [Bug 73275] Re: P-M high idle CPU usage, reported as fixed, persists in edgy
Sounds about right... please try the maxcstate thing, and see if we really do have the same problem. -- P-M high idle CPU usage, reported as fixed, persists in edgy https://launchpad.net/bugs/73275 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 73275] Re: P-M high idle CPU usage, reported as fixed, persists in edgy
like i can see the bubbles being rendered. instead of being filled in fast, it takes about 2 seconds to fill in. everything graphic wise is slow. for example, hold your cursor over the system menu, and the bubble that appears should fill in rather quickly, mine takes upwards of 4 seconds -- P-M high idle CPU usage, reported as fixed, persists in edgy https://launchpad.net/bugs/73275 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 73275] Re: P-M high idle CPU usage, reported as fixed, persists in edgy
Define graphic usage? before the maxcstate, i would have really slow video performance, even with little things, "tool tips" would take for ever to paint, screen repaints (maximising windows) would take forever, could see all object being rendered. etc. -- P-M high idle CPU usage, reported as fixed, persists in edgy https://launchpad.net/bugs/73275 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 73275] Re: P-M high idle CPU usage, reported as fixed, persists in edgy
I use a Sony Vaio VGN-S460. It has the pentium Centrino processor. After a fresh install I'm idling at 40% sometimes higher, with nothing but the OS running. I havent tried adding this maxcstate yet, but this whole bug seems to also affect graphic usage as well. -- P-M high idle CPU usage, reported as fixed, persists in edgy https://launchpad.net/bugs/73275 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 73275] Re: P-M high idle CPU usage, reported as fixed, persists in edgy
rebuilding the kernel for non-smp takes care of the problem, but rebuilding the kernel is alot of as of all but the most advanced ubuntu users; and there are ALOT of P-M based machines out there. -- P-M high idle CPU usage, reported as fixed, persists in edgy https://launchpad.net/bugs/73275 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
