Well, I'm not sure if I've understood your problems.

Is it that you don't like the cube-switching workspaces? If it's that,
then I think that's not really a bug. You can just unmark the
workspaces in a cube option in desktop-effects when launching compiz.

If it's not that, please, try to be a little clearer. I'm not an English
speaker ;)

Yes, sliding is quite irritating. Surprisingly, the cube is (at least
for me) easier on the eyes than the classic switch, and with
/apps/compiz/plugins/rotate/screen0/options/snap_top on and the (not
well described) function to switch the image it becomes quite useful as
a presentation software.

The cube also fixes several other bugs/underfeaturisms, such as
ctrl+alt+(left|right) window moving.

I'm using an i945 and here the default should be either metacity-like or
cube.
