[Bug 75177] Re: eMachines m6805: vbetool fails to restore from hibernate in edgy (ok in dapper)

2007-01-19 Thread Peter Whittaker
Aaron, I'm going to mark this as "rejected", which in this case
basically means "there was a problem but it disappeared and we cannot
reproduce it!" (I don't care for "rejected" as a status flag, but that's
what we've got... ...discuss on The Sounder, I suppose, not here...
8-}).

I think this is the appropriate thing to do since everything works for
you now, and since the odds of our reproducing this - based on the path
taken to get this machine to Edgy/Feisty-with-swap - are virtually nil.

Ken, in all likelihood, you have a different bug - if at all possible,
please move to a more recent Feisty (daily live 20070118 worked well for
me, though the install was very slow), retest, and open a new bug report
if the problem recurs.

Thanks to both of you for your work on this, it is much appreciated!

** Changed in: vbetool (Ubuntu)
   Status: Unconfirmed => Rejected

[Bug 75177] Re: eMachines m6805: vbetool fails to restore from hibernate in edgy (ok in dapper)

2007-01-18 Thread Aaron Peromsik
It still works, but I'm finding myself confused about the cause. Just
wanted to mention that I did not upgrade from dapper to edgy on the same
partition... it was a fresh install on a partition that used to contain
a different distribution which I used before dapper. (Yes, edgy's
installer reformatted that partition.) Both dapper and edgy installs
share the same swap partition, but I don't think I had hibernated dapper
recently before the install, and I don't think I had the symptoms of
other people with the upgrade issue, in that I think my swap partition
was probably actually being used for swap. (Only 512MB RAM on this
machine.) Also, the fact that I could ssh to the machine makes me think
it mostly was resuming OK except for some detail related to the display.

Might there be some other bug in the installer that got corrected or
worked around when I added the feisty kernel?

[Bug 75177] Re: eMachines m6805: vbetool fails to restore from hibernate in edgy (ok in dapper)

2007-01-18 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Peter, thanks for your response. The edgy kernel is still on my machine
and still listed in grub, so I booted it... I wasn't sure what you meant
by "ensure you have a valid swap partition," so I asked Google and found
bug 66637. Before following the instructions there I checked /etc
/initramfs-tools/conf.d/initramfs-tools/resume against the UUID in
/dev/disks/by-uuid and they matched. So I tried hibernate, and it
worked. Just hibernated again in the middle of composing this and
firefox still had my entry... so I guess it smells like a duplicate.
Assuming that the act of installing the new kernel happened to
straighten out the initramfs setting as a side-effect?

Interestingly, bcm43xx is working with the edgy kernel now, though I
will probably go back to ndiswrapper for now since bcm43xx has some
quirks as mentioned above.

Thanks again,

[Bug 75177] Re: eMachines m6805: vbetool fails to restore from hibernate in edgy (ok in dapper)

2007-01-18 Thread Peter Whittaker
Aaron, there is a chance you were bitten by a dapper-to-edgy upgrade bug
that corrupted your swap partition and thus disabled hibernation.

Would it be possible for you to revert to the Edgy kernel, ensure you
have a valid swap partition (at least as large as your machine's
physical memory), and try hibernation again?

If the hibernation fails, please reboot and attach to this report the
file /var/log/kern.log.0

If you cannot revert, or if the hibernation fails, the output of the
following commands could also be useful:

uname -a

sudo lspci -vv

sudo lspci -vvn

sudo dmidecode

Thanks for your work on this bug report!

[Bug 75177] Re: eMachines m6805: vbetool fails to restore from hibernate in edgy (ok in dapper)

2007-01-17 Thread Aaron Peromsik
Seems to be a kernel issue. This http://www.ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-298903.html";>thread
suggested trying a new kernel, so I built the dev kernel for edgy, and
now I can hibernate and resume just fine. Of course nothing is that
simple: with the new kernel, ndiswrapper doesn't work, but bcm43xx
does-- reverse of my experience with 2.6.17. Still some small issues
with bcm43xx not getting the right bitrate at startup, but anyway I can
suspend now. Just for the record, I had tried suspend without
ndiswrapper loaded and it didn't help, so that's not the issue.
Currently running 2.6.20-6-ref-386 built per instructions https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelCustomBuild";>here.

2007-01-13 Thread Ken Lewis
I have a MSI Megabook M635 (aka MS1029) and have the same issues, with
an ATi Mobility RX480 + SB400 chipset and Mobility Radeon X700; Feisty's
vbetool povides the following lines in the kernel log (twice to show
repeatability):

Jan 13 19:31:24 formaldehyde kernel: [ 45.833971] vbetool[4137]:
segfault at 362f rip 004247f7 rsp 77122d90

Jan 13 19:49:51 formaldehyde kernel: [ 50.774405] vbetool[4042]:
segfault at 362f rip 004247f7 rsp 7fff15f14220
error 4

There is also a line printed to the console saying "command not
supported".
