[Bug 75214] Re: Screen occasionally offset to the left
For reference: This problem appears to have been caused by a kernel console bug that was fixed in 2.6.22 (see the Linux kernel mailing list thread at http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/4/27/370), so this problem should be gone in Gutsy. Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you while using Feisty? [Bug 75214] Re: Screen occasionally offset to the left
I still haven't found the script that makes this happen, but a quick workaround is to switch terminals. Press ctrl+alt+f4 (for example) and then switch back to the graphical terminal with ctrl+alt+f7. Let's hope feisty fixes this. -- Screen occasionally offset to the left https://launchpad.net/bugs/75214 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

This just happened to me again, and as I was halfway through typing something I kept going. About two minutes later, the screen shifted even more. -- Screen occasionally offset to the left https://launchpad.net/bugs/75214 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 75214] Re: Screen occasionally offset to the left
Just for your information, I'm think I'm on my way to find the cause of the problem. I think it is one of the daily cron scripts. What I've done now is that I mode all files from /etc/cron.daily another directory. Since then, the problem has not occured. Now i'm moving one script per day back to /etc/cron.daily. So far I have the following scripts enabled ~ ls /etc/cron.daily/ apt aptitude find.notslocate slocate tetex-bin and the problem still hasn't occured. So my guess is that it has something to do with one of the scripts that I have currently disabled: ~ ls /etc/disabled.cron.daily/ 0anacron bsdmainutils logrotate man-db standard sysklogd I'll post back here when I find the culprit. -- Screen occasionally offset to the left https://launchpad.net/bugs/75214 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 75214] Re: Screen occasionally offset to the left
OK, it doesn't have to do with updatedb either. Today I resumed from a more-than-week-long hibernation; the screen shifted while updatedb was running (as usual); I re-hibernated and resumed; the screen soon shifted again. I also checked for dmesg entries, but there were none at the time the error occured. [Bug 75214] Re: Screen occasionally offset to the left
Joachim: if you have an nVidia card, you can search for nvidia-glx in Synaptic, and look at the installed version number there. However, I doubt that this problem has to do with the driver version, after all. Do you also have a Dell laptop? I've also noticed that the problem doesn't seem to be related to hibernation, as I thought first. It's just that I usually hibernate and resume once per day. However, I've noticed that it (at least usually) happens when the daily updatedb is run. -- Screen occasionally offset to the left https://launchpad.net/bugs/75214 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 75214] Re: Screen occasionally offset to the left
The version number is 1.0.8774+2.6.17.5-11 I don't know how to tell when updatedb is run, but I can report that this problem happens several times a day. Yesterday I tried logging out to fix the problem, and each time (twice) it reoccurred a few minutes after logging back in. -- Screen occasionally offset to the left https://launchpad.net/bugs/75214 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

How do I find out which drivers I am using? [Bug 75214] Re: Screen occasionally offset to the left
Some more results of my troubleshooting: The problem doesn't have to do with the restricted nVidia drivers. I recently changed from the non-free (nvidia) driver to the free (nv) driver, and the problem still appeared after a while. What about you, Joachim, are you using the nVidia drivers as well? Which version? Also, I've noticed that I don't need to log out and in again to get the screen to look right. If I just hibernate while the screen is offset, it looks right again when I resume. -- Screen occasionally offset to the left https://launchpad.net/bugs/75214 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 75214] Re: Screen occasionally offset to the left
This happens to me as well. It started after I ran several recommended updates this Monday; most notably xorg and xserver-xorg from version 1:7.1.1ubuntu6 to 1:7.1.1ubuntu6.2. It happened during the upgrade in question, and since then, it has happened once shortly after each time I resume from hibernation. Logging out and in again solves the problem temporarily, until the next day when I resume. It seems to happen about 5 minutes after I resume (has happened three times so far). If I leave it running, without re-logging in, the screen shifts further to the left. I'm guessing it's about 50 pixels at a time. The mouse pointer is still using the real screen coordinates, so I have to click 50 or so pixels to the right of where I want. I'm running the nVidia 8776 driver from the official repos, on a GeForce4 4200 Go graphics card in a Dell Latitude D800 with a widescreen 1680x1050 monitor. Taking a screenshot does not show the problem (the screenshots look normal), so I can't show exactly how it looks, unfortunately. -- Screen occasionally offset to the left https://launchpad.net/bugs/75214 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
