[Bug 770258] Re: Extremely high latency when writing to USB drives.
Alan Pope, if you have a bug in Ubuntu, could you please file a new report by executing the following in a terminal: ubuntu-bug linux For more on this, please see the Ubuntu Kernel team article: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/KernelTeamBugPolicies#Filing_Kernel_Bug_reports the Ubuntu Bug Control team and Ubuntu Bug Squad team article: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/BestPractices#X.2BAC8-Reporting.Focus_on_One_Issue and Ubuntu Community article: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette When opening up the new report, please feel free to subscribe me to it. Please note, not filing a new report may delay your problem being addressed as quickly as possible. Setting back to incomplete. The bug still exists, is still annoying, but I don't have time to test the upstream kernel right now. ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: Expired => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/770258 Title: Extremely high latency when writing to USB drives. [Bug 770258] Re: Extremely high latency when writing to USB drives.
This bug is somewhat difficult to reproduce. I still see it from time to time, but it seems to only happen under certain conditions, for example one process is maxing out a single CPU core, and a different one is trying to do a lot of I/O. It also seems to depend on the USB device, possibly only affecting certain transfer sizes. It's not as simple as just plugging in a thumb drive and dd'ing to it (although that is the primary use case when I see the bug.) Additionally since I reported this bug I've upgraded my memory to 16GB. No, the issue was not caused by swapping, but the extra memory really cuts down on the i/o pressure because now pretty much everything is permanently cached. I've also more or less stopped using an external USB drive for my music etc, which is now on a NAS instead. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/770258 Title: Extremely high latency when writing to USB drives. [Bug 770258] Re: Extremely high latency when writing to USB drives.
Alistair Buxton, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report: apport-collect -p linux Also, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream- testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. As well, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'. If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'. If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream', and comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it. Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance. [Bug 770258] Re: Extremely high latency when writing to USB drives.
** Description changed: To reproduce: 1. Plug in a 1GB or larger USB 2.0 flash drive. - 2. Download a large OS installation image - 3. dd if=os.img of=/dev/sde + 2. Write any large file to it: + dd if=os.img of=/dev/sde While the file is copying I attempt to continue to use the computer for other tasks. But it becomes slower and slower as the copy goes on. Eventually the display locks completely, even the mouse pointer does not move. As soon as the computer stops writing to the USB device (light on it stops flashing), everything starts working again.
