First I have seen Unity I thought: Hey, this is going in a nice direction - I like Cairo Dock very much (still trying to find an optimal configuration for me). I like the icons on the left and that this sort of menu is combined with the task bar. However, from all available Dockbars like SimDock, Cairo Dock and all those - the unity is really the one with the poorest set of features and zero configuration - I could not find any option somewhere to adapt behaviour. And the Unity task bar sometimes hides and sometimes not - not always in a manner I can understand. And how to change order of icons? Tried a long time without success. Apart from that look e.g. at the menu location - extracted from Window and put to top. What sense does that make? Imagine a large monitor/screen and a small window on the bottom right - many mouse miles to go to the menu and back. - OK managed to switch that back to original - but the default does not make sense. Next thing: Some applications I used, I either don't remember the name - how to find them now? More clicks than before to get to application categories and huge icons - now overview. I can understand and appreciate the attempts to create something new - but you can't put something like this as standard for the distro when it is very far from being finished. I hope someone understand that I actually want Unity to get better, so good, it will be unavoidable to use it, and people will love it... having 50% i hate it, 30% it looks odd, 10% er, so so, 5 % I could use it it I have to, and 5% I simply love it... should not be the goal. 2011/4/28 Fabio T. I never said it could not be fixed... and by the way, choices are good... I just pointed clear flaws that WILL PREVENT NORMAL USERS from ever trying to adopt it as it stands... my mom found it creepy, to say the least, and made me promisse never to put it in her own computer. Both my work partners, my brother, an uncle, his son... They all had similar reactions :-/ It has got to improove a lot before being considered the default setting of any thing... if it is still that bizaar, when its intended to become the Ubuntu look and feel, people will tend to avoid it. I tend to enjoy Unity. Brings something new to the table. Plus, with the roll-out of GNOME3 comes a pretty bland interface, since it's still so new. There should be a mix of GNOME3 and Unity, but with more user preferences allowing customization. Just remember, GNOME didn't start out perfect. One has to agree with PresuntoRJ above. Finding the right app takes much more time then the classic main-menu & gnome-panel.. By the way, both apps can be used in natty-unity, use the startup applications preferences & add gnome-panel, vola, natty-unity is half way fixed. Now, make the launcher roll into one icon-button, & make the rolled up launcher move to any panel, & any of th sides or corners, horizontal or vertical. Have the search window actually accept input & execute. Better yet, have gnome3 & gnome-shell install, switchable with unity & classic desktop. Unity was a error & bug of epic proportions. Gnome3 is by far the best upgrade of Linux, from its start to now. Gnome3 has great updatability, is upgradeable , tweak-able, & adaptable. Unity is a dead end! The main-menu or gnome-menu could work for small devices. Many of us anonymous testers & decision makers will go with gnome3, Ubuntu-gnome, we'll keep an eye on unity to the bitter end.
