In my case I installed gnome-shell and after some weeks reverted back to unity. And after this process, had this error. I tried installing libdconf0 but didn't solve the problem. Can you see if you have libdconf0 installed. Yup, it was missing, and installing it immediately fixed the problem and dramatically solved the situation. Now I have all my former gnome launchers listed. Looks as if the upgrade 10.10 - 11.04 would not install all libs needed for unity. the datetime indicator was also missing and needed to be installed manually. Problem of update-manager or dependencies.
