I have this problem frequently and with every application on Ubuntu 11.10. If I switch to a different workspace with multiple windows present, the top window never gets focus. This is a real problem if you'd like to drag the top window from that workspace to a different workspace with the ctrl+alt+shift+arrow keys gesture. And it's an even bigger problem since alt+tab crashes unity 80% of the time in 11.10, so you can't use that to switch to a hidden window. This issue should be reevaluated as the OP's post doesn't illustrate all the implications of this problem. This shouldn't be "low" priority IMO. Consider these cases: a critical problem for bad window focusing is that the Unity panel (which houses the close button for maximized applications) acts on the focused window, not the top window. This means unless the user habitually reads the title bar (I doubt many do), they'll probably close the wrong window by mistake. Similarly, an alt+f4 or ctrl-q/w key combo may do the same. All of these may result in a loss of work if the hidden application doesn't employ a prompt-to-save upon quitting or frequent autosaving (as is often the case if you're typing something into a text box in a web browser). This is made worse if the users thinks his mouse-click/key-combo to close the top-window didn't register the first time; thus not realizing the loss of data until he needs it again (one could envision an employee sending their boss a half-finished document). I can confirm the bug occurs much more frequently when moving to a desktop on which Eclipse (or Aptana which is based on Eclipse) is the window which should have focussed. It happens about 50% of the time and can usually be resolved by switching back to a different desktop then back to the desktop with Eclipse. I ran the proprietary fglrx up until about a year ago, ie before this issue. I am (and under Unity always have been) running the default Mesa/Gallium (0.4) driver. I have thus far continuously had 100% reproducibility for the conditions I described in comment #8. My suspicion, without being very close to the associated code or looking at it yet, is that the issue is a mishandled case involving the launcher or switcher retaining focus. It may be that the dual display setup handles focus and/or workspaces differently (such as by making it one big workspace that is split in half or replicated to the different displays) and thus circumvents the normal mechanism or conditions for single displays. Is anyone else who suffers these problems using FGLRX (ATI proprietary display drivers)? Just wondering, as I recently removed FGLRX from my laptop to get dual- displays working and haven't noticed the problem since. I'm definitely experiencing the Firefox issue in comment #2 and the Eclipse one in comment #6 on a fresh install of 11.10 (64bit). Happen to me every time I switch workspaces while using qtcreator. Qtcreator looses keyboard focus, even when clicking on it. I find that I can get this more reliably to occur or not occur by varying how long I wait before releasing alt+tab while switching workspaces. If I'm super fast, the window in my target workspace seems to rather reliably gain and retain focus while if I wait for the launcher to fully disappear I can perhaps guarantee the window will not have focus. I can confirm this. I am *not* using focus follows mouse. Steps to reproduce (not 100%, it seems to come and go): * Start Firefox on desktop 1, make sure unity launcher is visible * Ctrl+alt+right to desktop 2 * Start Qt Creator * Maximize window or move it so that it makes the launcher auto-hide * Select the editor, typing works. * Ctrl+alt+left to desktop 1 - Firefox gets focus * Ctrl+alt+right to desktop 2 - launcher starts to hide. Qt Creator cursor blinks briefly,, suggesting keyboard focus, but when launcher is done hiding the cursor disappears and keyboard input does not register. Clicking the window does not help, but switching to another app and then back does. It seems related to dock hide/unhide - if I move the QtC window so that it doesn't make the launcher hide (i.e. switching desktops keeps the launcher on the screen), the problem has never occured. I experience this same problem when switching desktops, but I've noticed it with Eclipse IDE. It is *very* frequent - about 1 in 3 attempts will replicate the problem. It occurs for me on two very different machines - my laptop and work desktop (dual display), both run 11.04 with Unity. On both machines I have my windows set to "select windows when mouse moves over them". I did not have this problem before upgrading to 11.04 (just a few days ago on my work laptop). Also, I haven't seen the bug in Firefox in atleast a couple weeks, I think one of the updates in the past month may have partially fixed the problem. I've confirmed that this is NOT just a problem with VirtualBox, per this comment: "I suspect this is also part of a few other less prevalent glitches that occasionally happen when switching virtual desktops." There is another common glitch with Unity, this probably applies to all programs, but I most typically see it in Firefox. Occasionally, when right-clicking on a link, the context menu disappears as soon as I try to mouse-over onto it(it seems to happen sporadically after switching virtual desktops, more infrequently than VirtualBox). Also, whenever the context-menu problem is present, if I type into the URL text box, it does not suggest URLs that I've visited before as normal. I've determined that this is part of the same problem as VirtualBox. Whenever the bug is present, if I re-focus the Firefox window by pressing ALT+TAB, the bug goes away. This indicates to me that the problem is related to the Window not properly receiving focus after switching virtual desktops. Can somebody please edit "VirtualBox" out of the title of the bug?
