[Bug 78282] Re: vnc4server does not start Desktop environment after security update
@pcr XDMCP is enabled and GDM works well with XMing (windows based X server). I get a working desktop when I login using Xming from a windows machine. When I try to connect with UltraVNC or TightVNCViewer from the windows machine, I get only the grey screen with the X cursor. This is why I think the problem may be on the side of vnc4server and not with GDM (although it is possible that GDM fails for some reason when working with vnc4server). -- vnc4server does not start Desktop environment after security update https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/78282 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 78282] Re: vnc4server does not start Desktop environment after security update
Has anyone tried this with the final Gutsy? I have a fresh Gutsy install configured for remote login with xinetd (not simply starting vncserver with a user) and all I get is a grey window with the mouse cursor. No matter what I do, I don't get a Gnome login screen, let alone a working desktop. It looks exactly like the bug described here. [Bug 78282] Re: vnc4server does not start Desktop environment after security update
This appears FIXED in Gutsy Gibbons! It seems the -extension XFIXES was added. I tested from a user account without an x session nor a $DISPLAY environment variable. vncserver :1 Then it requested the password. Then ... vncserver -kill :1 In /home/username/.vnc/xstartup I commented out the xterm line #xterm . replaced twm with gnome-session Then started it again. vncserver :1 Now tried vncviewer and got into the Gnome Desktop without problems. It would be nice if VNC4 was compiled against a newer version of Xorg like someone mentioned earlier in Debian had done. Rather than patching scripts which call Xvnc, wouldn't a better fix to be building Xvnc without the extension in the first place (Or determining why it is built in, but doesn't work?) [Bug 78282] Re: vnc4server does not start Desktop environment after security update
I have a similar problem according to ticket 68020. I cannot use Azureus under VNC4Server, but the above idea of using the TIghtVNCserver package did the trick for me. The problem's with VNC4Server that I can see. I've even gone so far as to try it with external Windows X servers. Mocha X works perfectly while X-Deep 32 4.0 fails miserably. Otherwise works fine with Xorg and TightVNC. Some info about the systems in question: I'm running Feisty Server i386 on my fileserver and Kubuntu Feisty i386 on my desktop. I want to run Azureus on the fileserver so I can free up my desktops and since that machine runs headless, I use a VNC server rather than a normal one. Until VNC4Server is fixed, I guss TIghtVNC will do for now. --Ian.

I tested upstream (Package: vnc4server (4.1.1+X4.3.0-21) in Debian Stable/Unstable/Testing) and it works properly other than the font path being wrong of course (easily worked around with a single symlink, but easily fixed in the package itself with a simple recompile). I also tested upstream 4.2.0 from realvnc.com and it had more significant path issues but again once it worked correctly once I plugged symlinks into the system to work around those path issues. So this appears to be a problem introduced by the Ubuntu packaging team, not a bug in the upstream. -- vnc4server does not start Desktop environment after security update https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/78282 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 78282] Re: vnc4server does not start Desktop environment after security update
I managed to get it working following this howto: First off, the window manager you see (tweed) is the twm window manager. There is no mouse support, because this window manager isn't fully installed on your system. Specifically, the menu package is not installed. If you start aptitude or synaptic and properly install twm, you would have a working system. But what you really want is GNOME, right? Well to get that you need to get vncserver operating with the correct config files. The HOWTO steps don't cover creating a xstartup config file for VNC to use that will allow you to choose your window manager (you're getting twm just by pure default). The easiest way to do this is as follows (cut from my personal TWIKI, so forgive the format hack job): * Installation with aptitiude [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# aptitude install vnc4server xinetd * First as root, we want to first establish configuration files in the /root/.vnc directory. This requires creating a VNC password. [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# vncpasswd Password: Verify: * Next, invoke the vncserver to cause the rest of the configuration files to be created. This may not be exactly the same problem as others are having...but hopefully someone can suggest a solution. I too have found that adding -extension XFIXES with the latest version of the binary fixes the immediate disconnection problem - just the same as backdating to an older version of the binary. However...when I'm presented with a login prompt...a correct ID and password yieldnothing - an immediate return to the login prompt. The syslog yields the following: warning: can't get client address: Transport endpoint is not connected VNC worked perfectly for me under Edgy with the backdated binary, but this started as soon as I did a repository upgrade to Feisty. [Bug 78282] Re: vnc4server does not start Desktop environment after security update
The return to the login prompt is because Feisty changed the default to not allow multiple logins for the same user. If you are running Xubuntu, for example, go to Applications - Settings - Login Window and there is an option on the General tab to disable multiple logins for a single user. By default this is now checked, which prevents you loggning in on :1 when you are already logged in with the same user on :0. [Bug 78282] Re: vnc4server does not start Desktop environment after security update
There are 3 things that have to be fixed in order to make vnc4server work. The first two are options needed to start vnc4server 1. Fix the font path used with -fp option. The -fp option with the right path in Feisty is: -fp /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc 2. Add -extension XFIXES option -extension XFIXES 3. The 3rd one is to allow multiple logins for a single user. To do so, open Applications - Settings - Login Window Then Uncheck the option on the General tab that says: disable multiple logins for a single user. If you are starting the vnc server from the command line you can just add the -fp and the -extension options with the right values mentioned in steps 1 and 2. If you are using xinetd to start the vnc server the server_args in the Xvnc file under /etc/xinetd.d should be a SINGLE line like this (unfortunately the line was split in my previous post because of the cut and paste): server_args = -inetd :1 -query localhost -geometry 1280x800 -depth 16 -fp /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc -DisconnectClients=0 -NeverShared passwordFile=/root/.vncpasswd -extension XFIXES -- vnc4server does not start Desktop environment after security update https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/78282 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 78282] Re: vnc4server does not start Desktop environment after security update
Heh.. was feeling smug until I discovered -extension XFIXES had already been suggested at the end of this thread! I've been working around with -extension XFIXES. I came across this bug looking to see if the one I'm about to file regarding a Segfault in VNC is a dup. I discovered this debugging the vnc server, and have some comments from RealVNC who I originally contacted: Firstly, VNC Free Edition 4.1.1 has a serious security issue and should not be used on any un-trusted network - VNC Free Edition 4.1.2 resolves this issue. Secondly, VNC Free Edition does not provide the Xfixes extension. From the patches filename you have included below, it looks like Ubuntu is using a custom VNC Free Edition 4.1.1-based package, which is build against a different version of the X server, and so does provide Xfixes. The two potential solutions I'd propose are: 1. Upgrade to the standard VNC Free Edition 4.1.2 package, which will not provide Xfixes and so presumably won't confuse GTK. OR 2. Find the run-time option to the Ubuntu VNC-based Xvnc to disable Xfixes support in the X server, again to avoid GTK being confused. The problem could be in the Ubuntu VNC-based X server build, advertising Xfixes but not properly supporting it, or in GTK in detecting Xfixes and then making invalid calls to use it, but it's impossible to say which. In either case, the packages you're using will have been patched by the Debian guys, so in the first instance it's worth reporting the issue to them - the package maintainers can then propagate the report if it turns out to be an issue with the underlying software. -- vnc4server does not start Desktop environment after security update https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/78282 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re-verified with vnc4server=4.1.1+xorg1.0.2-0ubuntu4 The core problem seems to be that any gnome apps fail with the error as below: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ gnome-session The program 'gnome-session' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'. (Details: serial 74 error_code 1 request_code 146 minor_code 2) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. [Bug 78282] Re: vnc4server does not start Desktop environment after security update
Changing the font path (-fp) may help. Like Stefan, my Xvnc started failing with thousands of Transport endpoint is not connected errors. Downgrading didn't help. What was happening is that Xvnc kept dying, and Xinetd kept restarting it. Thousands of times. Running Xvnc manually, I found it was failing to find the fonts. I tracked it down to a changed font path in the newer X server Change: /usr/share/X11/fonts/misc To: /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc That solved my problem. Thanks to Chad Bisk for suggesting I run it by hand, and to Scott Carpenter for this post, with the proper font path: http://www.movingtofreedom.org/2007/02/16/howto-remote-desktop-with-vnc-in-ubuntu-edgy-gnu-linux/ -- vnc4server does not start Desktop environment after security update https://launchpad.net/bugs/78282 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 78282] Re: vnc4server does not start Desktop environment after security update
In addition to having refresh problems with ATI driver as mentionned in LP 57156 vino provides only a way to control an existing session and not to create a new one remotely. Here is on current feisty a step by step reproducer: 1) update to latest version of vnc4server $ sudo apt-get install vnc4server 2) create a password: $ vncpasswd (enter any password twice) 3) modify the ~/.vnc/xstartup file so vnc starts in full desktop mode (uncomment the first two lines) #unset SESSION_MANAGER #exec /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc 4) run $ vncserver (wait a few seconds, you can tail -f the mentionned log file) 4) with the terminal server client open a VNC connection to localhost:1 (or localhost:X as mentionned in vncserver output) enter the password provided in 2) 5) you don't have a gnome session but just an xterm (and twm if you apt-get install twm) we'd like to be able to launch a gnome-session Note that any other vnc server besides vnc4server would be ok for me if you recommand one. -- vnc4server does not start Desktop environment after security update https://launchpad.net/bugs/78282 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 78282] Re: vnc4server does not start Desktop environment after security update
Hi, I can also confirm that the updated vnc4server has some problems - I can use the version in edgy just fine, but after trying the update, I can't log into the VNC server from my Windows machine (using UltraVNC). It asks for a password and then just dies. If I downgrade it (sudo apt-get install vnc4server/edgy), then connections work again. The log has some entries looking like this: Jan 28 18:55:15 fane-desktop xinetd[5388]: warning: can't get client a ddress: Transport endpoint is not connected Jan 28 18:55:32 fane-desktop xinetd[5404]: warning: can't get client a ddress: Transport endpoint is not connected Jan 28 18:56:40 fane-desktop xinetd[5476]: warning: can't get client a ddress: Transport endpoint is not connected I'm running vnc4server from xinetd, as the message suggests. Yes, that's correct. I edited the initial description. [Bug 78282] Re: vnc4server does not start Desktop environment after security update
I've isolated the problem a fair bit... xinitrc is run by ~/.vnc/xstartup, which executes `. /etc/X11/Xsession', which in turn seems to cause any process running it to crash, if it's set to connect to a Xvnc session. Running an xterm on it manually works fine, and the Xsession script works fine on a normal X session. I'll work out what it is that's causing the crash, and get it fixed ASAP. This problem has only appeared now due to vnc4 not having been built in Edgy until now, and not due to the security update changes to the source. The Dapper version of the security update works fine. ** Changed in: vnc4 (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = High Status: Unconfirmed = Confirmed -- vnc4server does not start Desktop environment after security update https://launchpad.net/bugs/78282 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
