[Bug 80263] Re: system becomes unresponsive over the day
I am no longer experiencing this problem. I did a BIOS upgrade, which really helped, and disabled power management. -- system becomes unresponsive over the day https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/80263 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 80263] Re: system becomes unresponsive over the day
I'm having the same problem; however, my system becomes unresponsive irrespective of what I'm running. If I leave it idle for more than a day, even if there are no users logged in, the system is unresponsive once I return. I'm pretty sure this is a 2.6 kernel issue, as I had this problem when running Debian Etch as well (with a 2.6 kernel). Also, as I mentioned earlier, the problem occurs even when there are no users logged in. Unfortunately, I can't find anything mysteriuous in the log files (/var/log, /var/syslog, dmesg), but I may not be looking in the right place. I can provide specific system information if anyone is interested (please specifiy exactly what you want). [Bug 80263] Re: system becomes unresponsive over the day
Ok, I found some people having the same problems as I am having: http://lists.xmms.org/pipermail/xmms-devel/2000-August/001528.html http://lists.xmms.org/pipermail/xmms-devel/1999-December/001024.html So it looks like xmms has a memory leak. I think I know now how to reproduce the bug: 1. open xmms, 2. play a radio stream for the whole day, 3. keep an eye on xmms memory usage. -- system becomes unresponsive over the day https://launchpad.net/bugs/80263 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 80263] Re: system becomes unresponsive over the day
Here's some more info: $ free total used free sharedbuffers cached Mem:506480 499220 7260 0 1648 65300 -/+ buffers/cache: 432272 74208 Swap: 1775172 4993281275844 $ Notice the swap amount being used. I don't know what exactly is in that swap, but judging by the application/desktop responsiveness I would say that it holds all the stuff I am currently working with. Maybe that explains the intensive CPU usage. The computer has to constantly swap (or trash) when I switch between applications. At the time free was measured, top displayed xmms using 38% of memory and firefox 11%, the rest was below 5%. Maybe it's xmms' fault after all? Or maybe a kernel misconfiguration? -- system becomes unresponsive over the day https://launchpad.net/bugs/80263 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 80263] Re: system becomes unresponsive over the day
I've managed to make a ps aux and a top when this was happening. I don't see anything suspicious, no process with high cpu usage, but superkaramba showed 100% cpu usage. I had to log out and back in to get the computer working normally again. [Bug 80263] Re: system becomes unresponsive over the day
You can see in the above attachment that xmms is using over 65% of memory. Usually it uses below 2%. But I wouldn't blame xmms at this point, because it happens with other apps too. -- system becomes unresponsive over the day https://launchpad.net/bugs/80263 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 80263] Re: system becomes unresponsive over the day
Tested it on Gentoo (2.6.16-gentoo-r9) on a 2-proc P4 3GHz with 2G ram and no swap, but could not reproduce it. This is while running xmms, konqueror, firefox, open office, and a bunch of xterms. CPU load did not go over 0.5. Offhand, this sounds a lot like a memory leak in one of the applications you're using. At least, what you describe are exactly the symptoms one would expect in a memory leak situation. So, CPU load shouldn't be a factor. Since you only have 512M memory, your system is probably especially sensitive to memory leaks. However, 512M should be more than plenty of memory, so this situation is definitely a bug, somewhere. Assuming the problem is a memory leak, I'd suggest watching top or ps for a day to identify any particularly noteworthy applications, and then run valgrind on them. If you find one that definitely has a leak, then post that valgrind log here. -- system becomes unresponsive over the day https://launchpad.net/bugs/80263 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 80263] Re: system becomes unresponsive over the day
I found another way to reproduce this bug: Open the attached .pdf file, and *try* to zoom into 300% (I use kdpf, but I guess it can be any program). When going over 200%, the mouse starts lagging, zooming further stops xmms from playing music, and the system becomes completely unresponsive. This happens with any kind of file or any operation that is CPU intensive. So it seems to me, as a process priority issue maybe... For comparison: on similar hardware (athlon 1.9 GHz, 512MB, 1GB swap) and with openSUSE 10.1, this does not happen. ** Attachment added: file to reproduce bug http://librarian.launchpad.net/5781020/test.pdf -- system becomes unresponsive over the day https://launchpad.net/bugs/80263 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 80263] Re: system becomes unresponsive over the day
** Description changed: There's a similar bug at: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/34822 but it was rejected. Computer: Dell optiplex gx620 (P4 3.2 GHz, 512 MB, 1.5GB swap) Desktop: KDE 3.5.5 On Kubuntu Edgy Eft (kernel 2.6.17-10-386), the system becomes (very) unresponsive after using it for a couple of hours. It's so bad that I can't even move the mouse (but the music still plays). It happens for example at the end of the day, when I try to close xmms which has been running all the time (~8 hours). It happens also when I try to reopen an application that has been just sitting and not doing much (like thunderbird or some documents in openoffice). It seems as if the kernel has problems loading applications from swap back to the memory. Superkaramba widgets show me the CPU usage at 100%, but top or ps -aux don't show any particular process using the CPU - so intensively. After waiting for about 2 or 3 minutes, the CPU usage - cools down, and I can use the system almost normally - the CPU is at - ~2%, but jumps up for any action, even right-clicking on the desktop. - Logging out, and back in puts things back to normal (I guess the swap - and memory get flushed or something). + so intensively. After waiting for about 2 or 3 minutes (sometimes it's + 15 to 30 minutes), the CPU usage cools down, and I can use the system + almost normally - the CPU is at ~2%, but jumps up for any action, even + right-clicking on the desktop. Logging out, and back in puts things back + to normal (I guess the swap and memory get flushed or something). The problem is reproducable since it happens every day. I guess the procedure would be to open a couple of applications (thunderbird, firefox, inkscape, amarok, konqueror, konsole and a few spreadsheet and word documents with openoffice) and surf the web for a couple of hours or days and then try to use any of the applications that have been lying around. -- system becomes unresponsive over the day https://launchpad.net/bugs/80263 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
