[Bug 80531] Re: Microphone not working

2009-07-16 Thread Pierre
ALTERNATIVE FIX:
I have tried everything in this page. Nothing worked until I tried this.

My Vista PC will not recognize my mic if plugged in the back... no sound...
The problem is reverse with ubuntu... on many computers, it does not recognize
you mic if plugged in the front.

Plug you headset/mic in the back of your computer... et voila!

You may need to play with the mic setting if you have messed them up.
If you have interference, turn of you mic boost / and possibly other
things (line in, capture?...)

Rich, one of the problems is that you haven't provided any information
regarding your audio hardware. There's a script that will automate that
information gathering process. Please see

[Bug 80531] Re: Microphone not working

2008-08-02 Thread CoEWar
FOLKS!!! I FOUND SOLUTION TO MICROPHONE PROBLEM WITH SKYPE anyway..
that was the BIG BIG hard one for me to get going.

I have Ubuntu 8.04 and getting Skype working with mic was tough as
nails. Mic performance was also up and down, practically depending on
the time of day.

But I found recently posted info on a website that whatever it did,
created a "pulse" selection for sound devices in Skype. THAT did the
trick.. now I have all kinds of apps all using PulseAudio (including a
Windows in a VirtualBox session) and all sound is working, including
Skype conversations.

Here is the link, and what you need to the stuff described as "Part A" ..
that's it.. to summarize, it's creating a couple of config files within your
own home directory:

[Bug 80531] Re: Microphone not working

2008-06-09 Thread herbie
Dear Developers,

Ubuntu team may seem very nice and polite but they might be scanning for
patents... Depending on how you look at their distribution of Linux it
is a feast to have a less usable version of Linux from a commercial off
the shelf point of view... Keeps people on their toes. Fortunately for
Europeans it is illegal in Europe, so there...

The option 'alsamixer' and 'kmix' works by installing 'kmix', initially
running 'alsamixer', pressing left and trying to set the microphone
change; note that the option of setting the microphone source type to
microphone one does not exist in Ubuntu, it does in the latest version
of Suse, where you can set both audio server and sink- source settings.

Set all recording volumes to maximum in 'kmix'. Test, using the gnome'
sound recorder', test both 'capture' and 'digital' [maybe abstract
source and sink] to enable the sound recording, sound recording will be
very loud. Then use the volume control in gnome sound recorder
configuration panel and handle the 'internal mic boost' or 'mic boost'
and 'capture' and 'digital' sliders. The 'digital' slider needs to be
enabled as it might act as the microphone 'source', the 'capture' slider
might then act as the 'sink'.

The Hardware Abstraction Layer in between those elements is still buggy
and leaks sound even though microphone is not set. Most probably this is
a fault in the Hardware Abstraction Layer. Developers of this layer just
need a nudge in the right direction and Linux distributions will work
properly. When developers of the Hardware Abstraction Layer are up to
date with what developers and computer users require. In the meantime,
consider switching to Linux Suse eleven point zero.

[Bug 80531] Re: Microphone not working

2008-03-07 Thread ranser
You know what BUGS me? The fact that on this page I see only the inputs
from users who have problems with this particular issue. I don't see any
input or advice or something from people who actually are at the root of
the problem who actually designed the unfortunate update. It seems to me
like they are doing it this way: "ok, so we designed the new update, it
seems to work on timmy's and johny's computers, we'll go now to Tibet
for 7 years, see you when we get back!" It is the people who are
actually doing the software that I want answers from, not some poor
users who are just as clueless as I am And to those who will say
they have a lot of work with new 6 months versions (and don't have much
time to look closely and test the new updates) I will say that in my
opinion it is completely unneeded to roll out a new version each 6
months : IT WOULD BE BETTER IF YOU LOOKED CLOSER INTO WHAT YOU ARE
DOING AND MAYBE TEST MORE. One release per year is more than enough! You
better spend time testing and than roll out those versions and updates,
because what you do is a DESERVICE to linux community. I see the same
old bugs for the last 4-5 years, someone points out the bugs they are
(hopefully) solved and than with next update come the same bugs. It
seems like the people who create updates and the people who solve bugs
are from different planets and they don't speak each others language. Or
maybe there are microsoft's spyes in those developers groups and they
intentionally place the same old bugs into new updates so they'll scary
off the newbies to linux...

I have the same problem as RichPicker, after update sound capture
doesn't work. I have tried everything I could find on the net and I am
tired...

Re: [Bug 80531] Re: Microphone not working

2008-03-07 Thread RichPicker
Yup. But it's not just ubuntu - it's software dev. in
general. They fix what they can, and let the rest go.

What would be cool, would be for someone to create a
video about how many problems ubuntu has, and how poor
the support is, and put the video on youtube.

But none of this negative complaining does any good.

My best solution is linuxquestions.org. It's a much
more positive community there.

I am grateful to the ubuntu developers. I have
received MUCH help from them, but they are swamped
with tons of stuff. It's the big dogs who make the
decisions about what to fix who are the problem.

I hoped for more support from the ubuntu user's group.
But instead, I have gotten much more help from
linuxquestions.org. I recommend them.

Again, let me say that I have received help from the
unbuntu developers. And I agree with you - it's a
hassle, and a bad deal for ubuntu - that the same bugs
are present with release after release.

Oh well... Email me directly, and I'll help with what
I can.

Peace,
Rich

Seems to be consistent, at least.

I don't have my notes with me. The best I can
remember, I added a line to the modprobe conf file,
and it worked in Edgy, and now also in Feisty. I'll
dig out my notes when I get back home and post the
instructions.

[Bug 80531] Re: Microphone not working

2007-04-18 Thread cctvpro
I also have this experience.

As a business user, making extensive use of skype for international
business, I must say that Ubuntu has now proven incapable of handling my
demands. version 6.10 was fine and the microphone worked with skype.
After updating to 7.04 this is no longer the case.

Going into the sound setting application from the panel, my microphone
is set and not muted. But there is no recording. I can hear myself
through the PC speakers, but cannot record.

The problem just appeared - probably some upgrade.

I started at the top of this page and tried each solution listed,
without success.

I stopped somewhere halfway down the page. Who wants to spend a few
weeks trying out a bunch of peoples imagined solutions. It would be nice
if someone actually researched what the problem is and fixed it.

I have to now reconsider a return to microsoft - wow. Free is not better
in this case.

The sound and mic on my Dell Inspiron 1300 laptop were
working perfectly until the infamous update. So,
Ubuntu did recognize the hardware at one time.

It's worrisome that updates are made without full
consideration of all users. And it's unfortunate that
users negatively effected by the updates are in the
minority of this community.

Thank you, GaryBrlow, for your hard work and
consideration.

Here is the output of aplay -l on my laptop:

I will do a clean install of Feisty next week, and
proceed from that point.

[Bug 80531] Re: Microphone not working

2007-04-15 Thread garybrlow
I glad the solutions I suggested helped some of you. The libasound(ALSA)
package has been updated and hopefully this has fixed existing problems
for everyone. I certainly hope it didn't introduce more problems for
anyone. Am not really sure what sound card a Dell Laptop uses but ALSA
can only detect things that the Linux hardware detection process detects
and register as available devices. From the looks of it Kmix doesn't
detect the mic and says its an invalid input device. Perhaps you could
ask the guys at ubuntu forums who have more or less the same hardware
you use for suggestions. The last resort is to reinstall everything in
other words do a clean install of ubuntu using the latest version.

Anyways, Feisty Fawn is upon us an will be released soon. Please take
time to test and report bugs to make ubuntu better. For those who like
testing, see you in the Gutsy Gibbon Alpha.

Cheers!!!

Re: [Bug 80531] Re: Microphone not working

2007-04-14 Thread RichPicker
I am jealous. My alsamixer has 'mic' and 'line' only.
It has never had mic1 or mic2. I'm using a Dell laptop
i386. Do I have the wrong alsamixer version?

My mic worked, and I used skype and soundrecorder,
until a recent update. Nobody has said they found what
was up with that update, but it hosed my system, and
no mic since. I did the complete rebuild (C), because
A and B did no effect. Now I have problems with the
sound as well as the mic.

The puzzle is that my mic worked until recently.

What happened with that update? What will happen with
Feisty Fawn?

[Bug 80531] Re: Microphone not working

2007-04-14 Thread mättu
tanx a lot. alsamixer -> setting to mic 1.
Now everything perfect.

It's very easy:
fire up a teminal
type "alsamixer"
use "->" to find "mic select"
use arrow-up to change to mic1

To quit alsamixer:
press "esc"

(with +20db-boosted mic I hear myself constantly in the speakers. So I
turned it off.)

greets

Yes, yes, yes, yes!! Thanks a lot GaryBrlow, your A method has worked for
me.
For others guidance, I'm working with an up to date Edgy Eft version with AC97

After some months without being able to record sound, you've solved it.

Thanks a lot once again.

[Bug 80531] Re: Microphone not working

2007-04-12 Thread piero bonatti
My microphone doesn't work, too. I've just installed Kubuntu 6.10 i386
on a vaio vgn-sz4mn, and I made immediately a complete update, so it
doesn't seem a problem related to obsolete drivers.

more precisely, the problem is that the internal microphone is
apparently not detected. neither alsamixer nor kmix show it. the
output works fine, but there is no trace of any capture device anywhere

hope you can help me - lack of skype is forcing me to use Vista more
frequently than I'd like to do.

I'm attaching lspci's output. more details on the installation can be found on
http://people.na.infn.it/~bonatti/kubuntu-6-10-on-vaio-sz4.html

the notebook is described at

Re: [Bug 80531] Re: Microphone not working

2007-04-10 Thread RichPicker
I have done each of the three proposed remedies. None
work. Still no microphone (but the microphone did work
until the recent) infamous update.

Before doing suggestion "C" I got static when I tried
to record. But after completing suggestion "C" I get
nothing - only silence.

Can anyone help me to get my microphone working again?

[Bug 80531] Re: Microphone not working

2007-04-08 Thread garybrlow
Since I can't edit my old post here is an update with a few changes and
references. You may also go here for thread discussion and possible
updates as well on the ubuntu forums found here
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=2422276#post2422276.

Method A:
The ALSA update sets the mic input to mic number 2 so you have to return it to
number 1 for default mic. Using GNOME/XFCE GUI may have no effect. You have to
use the alsa mixer on by typing alsamixer on the terminal. Use the left and
right arrow keys to navigate the column setting. Press left until you reach
and you will see that it is set to Mic2 use up/down arrow keys to
toggle the setting to Mic1. Mute Mic Column by pressing down all the way to the
bottom. Go to Capture tab by pressing tab until you get there. Then go to Mic
column again and press spacebar the word CAPTUR and L R appears on the column.
Bring volume up by pressing up arrow(doesn't really work but another guide said
to do this, taken form a Gentoo post which i have not bookmarked and don't know
here to look). The Capture column should have the same markings and bring the
volume up as well. You may have to use sudo if regular user can't set anything.
If this has no effect use Method B. This hasn't worked for me either but it
worked for others.

Here some more info by ComputerGuy56 found here
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=382106 on a similar solution.

Method B:
Even if you use GNOME or XFCE and since their own sound control GUIs seems to
have no effect including the alsamixer, install the kmix package. I know it
sounds weird installing kmix and you're not even using KDE believe me strangely
enough it works. After installation run kmix, it might not appear in the
application menu so use terminal instead. Go to the input section locate mic
and select mic 1. You should immediately hear sound input from your mic. Close
kmix and you may uninstall it after this. For me and other users this actually
did the trick.

Method C:
If all else fails you have to reset and cleanly reinstall ALSA and the Linux
sound modules. You can even make without Method A and B and use this instead.
Am not very sure about the result on this one but you could provide your
experience on what happens. This method taken from the Comprehensive Sound
Probelm Solutions Guide - Getting the ALSA drivers from a *fresh* kernel
section found here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...ensive+so und. Refer
to the guide first before doing anything.

Via the terminal run the following commands:

1) To remove the related packages and configuration files:

sudo apt-get --purge remove linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils

This will also uninstall gnome-desktop, xubuntu-desktop and GDM on
Ubuntu/Xubuntu so just reinstall them as well.

2) Reinstall those same packages:

sudo apt-get install linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils

3) Reinstall GDM and the desktop package:

sudo apt-get install gdm ubuntu-desktop (ubuntu)

Reinstall GDM and the desktop package:

sudo apt-get install gdm xubuntu-desktop (xubuntu)

Cheers!!!

[Bug 80531] Re: Microphone not working

2007-04-07 Thread garybrlow
For those having problems with here's temporary fix:

You may have to use sudo if regular user can't set
anything. If this has no effect use Method B.

Method B:
Even if you use GNOME or XFCE and since their own sound control GUIs seems to
have no effect including the alsamixer, install the kmix package. I know it
sounds wierd installing kmix and you're not even using KDE believe me strangely
enough it works. After installation run kmix, it might not appear in the
application menu so use terminal instead. Go to the input section locate mic
and select mic 1. You should immediately hear sound input from your mic. Close
kmix and you may uninstall it after this.

Method C:
If all else fails you have to reset and cleanly reinstall ALSA and the Linux
sound modules. You can even make without Method A and B and use this instead.
Via the terminal run the following commands:
1) To remove the related packages and configuration files: sudo apt-get --purge
remove linux-sound-base alsa-base alsa-utils
This will also uninstall gnome-desktop, xubuntu-desktop and GDM on
Ubuntu/Xubuntu so just reinstall them as well.
2) Reinstall those same packages: sudo apt-get install linux-sound-base
alsa-base alsa-utils
3) Reinstall GDM and the desktop package: sudo apt-get install gdm
ubuntu-desktop (ubuntu)
Reinstall GDM and the desktop package: sudo apt-get install gdm
xubuntu-desktop (xubuntu)

All this were tested using feisty and may also be applicable to edgy and
dapper. Please try it out and see what works best for you.

Cheers!!!

Any news or hope about the microphone?

Also, about every fifth or sixth time I turn on this
computer, the trackpad doesn't work.

Seems that the mic and trackpad still have some
problem.

Microphone is not working in Feisty for quite sometime now as well. It

module updates didn't fix it yet. Sound is fine but recording/capture
and the microphone is definitely not working. My Hardware is a Creative
Vibra 128 on Xubuntu Feisty with the Mic Volume set on MAx and the 20dB
Boost on.

There are other bug complaints out there that confirm this please review
them.

All was working until one of the updates. Has this happened to others
also recently. My microphone does not work again. I don't know what
changed in the software updates. I do not know how to get the mic to
work again.

Also, as a result of the recent update, GoogleEarth stopped working
also,

Is this being investigated? I'll appreciate the help.

an external microphone that plugs into the mic jack,

[Bug 80531] Re: Microphone not working

2007-01-19 Thread Roel Huybrechts
** Summary changed:

- No Mic
+ Microphone not working

** Description changed:

Ubuntu, Dapper Drake. The microphone doesn't work. I've read and read
and read the posts about it, but none of the 'fixes' work. Many people
have this problem. Is it possible to get the mic to work? Also, I
already submitted a bug report for the terrible trackpad response. It's
  almost unuseable.

I have been running linux for 4 days, and I must say that I regret
installing it. It is more difficult and less reliable than windows. I
thought it was supposed to be the other way around. I have lost too much
time installing this and that and reading many many posts, none of which
offer the solution. I understand this is a community-based creation. But
Dapper Drake does not work well. Shouldn't that be the first priority?
