[Bug 814316] Re: Natty's kernel update 2.6.38-11 kills network card config
Will I have to do this procedure every time Ubuntu updates its kernel and misconfigure the network? Isn't it a case of updating the driver Ubuntu ships with? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/814316 Title: Natty's kernel update 2.6.38-11 kills network card config To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/814316/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 814316] Re: Natty's kernel update 2.6.38-11 kills network card config
Hi Paulo, As it stands you will indeed have to update your driver for every new kernel. However, there's a mechanism called dkms that will take care of automatically compiling and installing the driver when you update your kernel. Look for instructions here: http://djlab.com/2010/10/fixing-rtl8111-8168b-driver-debian-ubuntu/ I looked at possible related bug reports and I see no work being done to include the r8168 driver in the kernel, maybe there's some problem with Realtek's driver code or its licensing terms that preclude its inclusion in the Linux kernel. It's about the only plausible explanation for this omission. So for the time being the dkms solution is probably the safest way to go. --- Ubuntu Bug Squad volunteer triager http://wiki.ubuntu.com/BugSquad -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/814316 Title: Natty's kernel update 2.6.38-11 kills network card config To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/814316/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Daniel! Firstly, thanks for your patience for sticking together until here. Indeed, your explanation for the omission convinced me. That's so frustrating! =/ And your link was good enough and then I made what it says. I will wait until the next kernel release to test its changes. I hope this thread could help many others in this situation in the future (at least until a fix be released). I missed links about this problem when I had it for the first time. Thank you so much! [Bug 814316] Re: Natty's kernel update 2.6.38-11 kills network card config
Hello Paulo, Thanks for sending this updated report! Now, if I understand correctly: 1- Your card didn't work with the 2.6.38-10 kernel. 2- You followed the instructions you linked to, which have you compiling a driver from source code. 3- You upgraded to the 2.6.38-11 kernel. 4- Now your network card doesn't work. If this sequence of events is correct, the missing part is that when you compile a driver from source code, it's kernel version-specific, this means that if you upgraded to a different kernel (even just the difference between 2.6.38-10 and 2.6.38-11), you need to recompile the driver from source, basically redoing steps 4, 5, 6 and 8 (7 is not necessary as blacklisting drivers does carry over from one kernel version to the next, this is also why you probably don't have the r8169 driver anymore, as in step 2 of the post's instructions to verify the r8169 driver). Could you tell me whether I understood correctly, and if so, whether trying to recompile the driver makes it work again? [Bug 814316] Re: Natty's kernel update 2.6.38-11 kills network card config
Hey Daniel! It's about like that. What I can say that I understood, in a non-expert view, is: 1) No, my card did work with 2.6.38-10 kernel. It was doing it randomly. That link I refer says that Ubuntu automatic config does not get a good driver, or something like that. 2) Yes, the link proposes to put the driver that Ubuntu used in blacklist and update using the linked at Realtek's website, so I did this. 3) Yes, I did the update normally using Synaptic. A post-observation (and the problem that gave me some crisis) was that I had set the -10 kernel to completely removal, but lukily it didn't get it. I don't know why but after a couple hours I realised that the packages were there yet, and so I could install them again and give these info to you. 4) Yes, -11 kernel does not find the network card. Strangely, I think the kernel had updated between the time I compiled the driver and yesterday, so this is the cause of my surprise and inspired me to post here. Good to know the blacklist part isn't required, but if I skip that step would the driver for r8169 be that one that caused me trouble in -10 kernel? Is this problem a very specific one? I'm going to try to recompile the driver now. I'm going to be back later with your answer. ;) Thanks!
