DnD folders the bookmarks section doesn't work for me either in 12.04. I do have some bookmarks present already. No errors in .xsession-errors @ Rocko (rockorequin) wrote on 2012-03-03: For me, it is not at all obvious that you have to actually be in the folder you are trying to bookmark with the menu Add Bookmark option, because normally I select a folder with the mouse and use dnd, so (naturally?) I expected the menu option to work on the currently selected folder. So yes, the behaviour of the menu option is confusing. Not sure if this is the recommended place to do so, but I would like to add that that bookmarking behaviour was not at all obvioius to me either. @burli: yes, it's true that you cannot add a bookmark if there are no bookmarks already. I tried this on my VM, and no errors are printed when I try to add a bookmark, either with drag and drop or via the menu. And the perms on that file are: -rw-rw-r-- 1 rocko rocko 128 Mar 2 07:35 .gtk-bookmarks I do get an error when starting nautilus, but it looks like an unrelated samba issue: Initializing nautilus-gdu extension Nautilus-Share-Message: Called net usershare info but it failed: 'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare: cannot open usershare directory /var/lib/samba/usershares. Error No such file or directory Please ask your system administrator to enable user sharing. I also upgraded my main machine to precise, ie with a user account that already has bookmarks, and bookmarks work correctly. But when I try a new user where no bookmarks are defined, I can't add the first bookmark. @Sebastien: When you tried adding a bookmark in a guest session, did nautilus already display a Bookmarks section on the left side? Where did you drag the bookmark to? I only see 'Computer' and 'Network' sections on the left. Dragging to the entries in 'Computer' just tries to move the folder I'm dragging to the folder I drop it in, eg if I drop it in 'Rubbish Bin' it goes the to the trash. Dragging it to 'Browse Network' says 'There was an error created the folder X'. Dragging it to an unmarked section (ie just blank space on the left tab) doesn't do anything at all. Does pressing Ctrl-D add a bookmark? Here's a screen video showing me trying unsuccessfully to add a bookmark via drag'n'drop and also via the bookmark menu. Note that in the (other) user account where I already have a bookmarks section and where adding bookmarks works, I get a horizontal black line displayed in the left-hand section when I drag a folder over it. The line moves between other bookmarks as feedback to indicate where the bookmark will be added when I release the button. There is no such line displayed here. This machine in the video is one that I created in VirtualBox by installing from scratch. If your guest session has no Bookmark section, and a new user created upon installation is created without a Bookmark section by default, so it therefore impossible to add a bookmark via drag and drop for new users. This is a pity but if there is a working menu option to do it, it's not so serious. It is, however, a regression from Oneiric where I could add a bookmark via drag and drop (it is just very, very hard to do so). But more importantly, do you notice in my video that I tried the Add Bookmark menu option and it didn't work? possible in Oneiric to actually create the first bookmark, it's just
unbelievably hard to do so.)
@Thibaut: I agree this bug is still present in Precise. In fact, I can't
even see a Bookmarks section in nautilus in Precise! So there's nowhere
to drag and drop the folder to. And 'Add Bookmark' from the menu does
nothing.
I also tried removing a bookmark in Precise ('Pictures') using 'Edit
Bookmarks' but that doesn't work either.

Yes, it's damn-near impossible to add the first bookmark. I've confirmed this bug after upgrading my host PC to Oneiric beta1 (I first logged this bug after finding it in a newly-installed VM). The existing bookmarks are in nautilus, but Add Bookmark (or drag'n'drop) does nothing. I am getting some .xsession-errors related to nautilus: (nautilus:2841): Gtk-WARNING **: gtk_widget_size_allocate(): attempt to underallocate NautilusPathBar's child GtkButton 0x17a4480. I think the problem can be reproduced as follows: 1. Open the home folder by clicking on the home icon in unity. 2. Try and drag'n'drop a folder to the sidebar. If you tried to drag it anywhere but the bookmarks subsection of the sidebar, the folder zooms back whence it came and isn't added to the bookmarks. (It would certainly be more user-friendly if it were added to the bookmarks instead.) If you tried to drag it to the bottom of the bookmarks section, ie under the last listed bookmark, it also zooms back whence it came is isn't added to the bookmarks. It *should* be added to the bookmarks. I think this is also the default case for a brand new user, who has no bookmarks by definition and therefore cannot add one. If you drag it across to elsewhere in the bookmarks section, it is added. And at that point you can also drag another folder to the very bottom of the bookmarks section, ie it starts to work. Closing the nautilus window and re-opening it causes the same issue as above. ** Description changed: I can no longer add a bookmark to nautilus in the current Oneiric. - Choosing 'Add Bookmark' from the menu does nothing. I also can't change the preferences 'show new folders in icon view'. It is stuck in list view. I have checked that all the files in the home folder are owned by my user. Where does nautilus store its settings? Nope, it doesn't work for a brand new user either. I created an admin user in case that makes any difference.
