[Bug 859283] Re: non-maximized applications sometimes reset to maximized when restored from the launcher
I had been trying unity -reset so I tried unity --reset. [Bug 859283] Re: non-maximized applications sometimes reset to maximized when restored from the launcher
@RichardN: just to check, did you try "unity --reset" (with two hyphens) or just "unity -reset" (with one hyphen)? The latter probably won't do anything. Before trying "unity --reset", I notice that there is an --advanced- debug option, so you could try running "unity --advanced-debug --replace" to see if you get any more useful information when the bug happens. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/859283 Title: non-maximized applications sometimes reset to maximized when restored from the launcher To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/859283/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I've got it happening at the moment. [Bug 859283] Re: non-maximized applications sometimes reset to maximized when restored from the launcher
Yes, I have a dual monitor setup, 64 bit, all updates applied. It happens to me only with Firefox. Creating it is quite simple. Open Firefox, un-maximise with the top left button with the square icon. Minimise it with the button with the line icon. Then hit the firefox icon in the dock on the left and it will come back as maximised. Except that sometimes it doesn't happen like that. I don't know what the difference is. It will go for days where it will go back (correctly) to the same window it was in before it was minimised and I think oh the problem is fixed, then it will change back to the problem behaviour for days or even weeks. It does seem that when the problem is occuring, Firefox always opens maximised and when it is not occuring, Firefox opens to a non-maximised window.

Thanks for the bug report. RichardN are you also using a multimontor setup where the problem is happened? [Bug 859283] Re: non-maximized applications sometimes reset to maximized when restored from the launcher
Actually those .xsession-errors messages appear when restoring (the smaller) windows that don't experience this bug, so they might just be misleading.
[Bug 859283] Re: non-maximized applications sometimes reset to maximized when restored from the launcher
This error from .xsession-errors is probably relevant. It happens when I restore a window that was previously fullscreen: Window manager wa: [WARNING] Wnck: Received a timestamp of 0; window activation may not function properly. tamp w manager warning: Buggy client sent a _NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW message with a timestamp of 0 for 0x2c000e9 (Inbox - Se) Window manager warning: meta_window_activate called by a pager with a 0 timestamp; the pager needs to be fixed. Window manager warning: Received a NET_CU: [WARNING] Wnck: Received a timestamp of 0; window activation may not function properly. Window manager warning: Buggy client sent a _NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW message with a timestamp of 0 for 0x4e9 (Bug #85928) Window manager warning: meta_window_activate called by a pager with a 0 timestamp; the pager needs to be fixed. ("Bug #85928" in the output is the partial title of the window.) Another example (window was not fullscreen when minimized): Window manager wa: ing: Received a NET_CURRENT_DESKTOP message from a broken (outdated) client who sent a 0 timestamp Window manager warning: Buggy client sent a _NET_ACTIVE_WINDOW message with a timestamp of 0 for 0x4e9 (Bug #85928) Window manager warning: meta_window_activate called by a pager with a 0 timestamp; the pager needs to be fixed. Note that the error messages themselves are corrupted (eg "Window manager wa: ing:") so maybe there is some buffer overflow going on.
[Bug 859283] Re: non-maximized applications sometimes reset to maximized when restored from the launcher
OK, this may not be compiz. The same thing happens in unity-2d, except that unity-2d recovers from the window being drawn behind the launcher (it immediately remaps it to next to the launcher). So which package is common to unity-3d and unity-2d and is likely to be causing this problem? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/859283 Title: non-maximized applications sometimes reset to maximized when restored from the launcher To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity/+bug/859283/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 859283] Re: non-maximized applications sometimes reset to maximized when restored from the launcher
And more odd behaviour: 1. Put gnome-terminal on the 1680x1080 external monitor and maximize it. 2. Minimize it. 3. Restore it from the launcher. After restoring, it appears at (0,0) on the laptop screen without window decorations. It is sized to 1680x1050 so there are unfilled areas to the right and below it, as the laptop screen is 1920x1080.
This bug is back with a vengeance in compiz 1:0.9.6+bzr20110929-0ubuntu5. It is now always happening. It seems to be related to the size of the non-maximized window: small windows are restored correctly, but windows near to the size of my display (1920x1080 on the laptop, 1680x1050 on the external monitor) become restored either (a) full-screen if they weren't full-screen before being minimized, or (b) entire-screen (ie they start at (0,0) and appear behind the unity launcher) if they were full-screen before being minimized.
The update to compiz 1:0.9.6-0ubuntu1 has stopped one aspect of this from happening: when you minimize a full-screen window, it no longer redisplays at 0,0. However, the bug is still present. It seems to switch between Thunderbird and Firefox as to which window always restores in full- screen mode irrespective of whether it was full screen when it was minimized, and this might be dependent on which one I run first. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/859283 Title: non-maximized applications sometimes reset to maximized when restored from the launcher To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/859283/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 859283] Re: non-maximized applications sometimes reset to maximized when restored from the launcher
After logging back in again, Thunderbird is re-exhibiting the issue, but with a twist: if it is maximized and I press the un-maximize button, it no longer has a titlebar.
