The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test: 1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux- image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test. --or-- 2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Intrepid Ibex Alpha 3 does not have the duplicated desktop icons on this pc. uname -a: Linux linux 2.6.26-5-generic #1 SMP Sun Aug 10 20:30:28 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux It's a 1.2 gHz Celeron. I also have this problem on Ubuntu Gutsy, with 2 DVD drives shown on my desktop, but it happened after I tried the method to solve computer frozen case with CTRL+ALT+F1, and I tried to use Slackware way to go back to the desktop startx, but I forgot I was on Gnome lol. Is the title for this bug correct? For me it seems that this problem could just as well be in HAL or gnome? Hello I am having the same problem as sergem. I am running the Gutsy Gibbon: Linux qwerzila 2.6.22-14-generic #1 SMP Sun Oct 14 23:05:12 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux If I have my harddrive mounted while turning off the computer it shows up twice when I start it again, the harddrive would need to be turned on as I boot up. The behavior when trying to unmount is the same as described in the other comments here. I can unmount one of the icons, the other stays. When I plug it in again the second icon shows up again. It does not have any records in fstab. Unlike some of the other reports I can only register showing up one time in dmesg. dmesg Basically, 2 icons are there from startup when there's a disk in the drive. If you eject either one, the same one remains, still pointing to /media/cdrom0. I've exactly the same problem with my USB drive and it happens only when I reboot or when computer being switched off and then switch on again with the USB drive plugged in then two icons appear. I have the exact same problem, but in this case its the DVD Drive. There is only one fstab entry, but it shows up as a mounted removable drive even when the DVD tray is empty. When a CD/DVD is inserted, the mounted drive icon appears on the desktop, pointing to the same location (as it normally should). I'm testing as an ordinary desktop computer user as mentioned in the Official Ubuntu Book, so what I'm running is CD Live out of the box for the Feisty Alpha, 20070301. Here's /etc/fstab as in the iso on the Ubuntu daily-live site: unionfs / unionfs rw 0 0 tmpfs /tmp tmpfs nosuid,nodev 0 0 So far I haven't seen the duplicate icons in Edgy or Dapper or PCLinuxOS or Knoppix or Simply Mepis or ... on the same hardware. My particular interest in the USB icon is casper-rw for persistent mode which broke on Feisty after 20070207 (there's a launchpad bug on that) because I'd like to test Feisty on the five different PC's on our lan. I'm not about to install Feisty Alpha on five computers especially after Herd 2 trashed my partition table. I have seen duplicate icons on two different sets of hardware. It really only finds one device... the size, etc., are output twice because the disk is revalidated by the block layer to make sure it was correct after it was brought up. It's annoying but harmless. As to why there are two icons... Same thing occurs with 20070225 on an IBM NetVista with a different USB drive. uname, dmesg, lspci -vvnn, and syslog are attached in one file. Search for .log to see the four logs.
