[Bug 880882] Re: X starts with garbled screen, restarting X from cli fixes

2014-01-06 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Jan, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in
the development release from a Terminal
(Applications-Accessories-Terminal), as it will automatically gather
and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg-server REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Please note, given that the information from the prior release is
already available, doing this on a release prior to the development one
would not be helpful.

Thank you for your understanding.

[Bug 880882] Re: X starts with garbled screen, restarting X from cli fixes

2014-01-06 Thread Jan
This is quite an old bug indeed.
The system in question was upgraded to ubuntu 13.04 or 13.10 (don't remember
exactly) which resulted in a black screen when X was supposed to have started
and an unusable system. I did not investigate this deeply but instead did a
fresh install of Xubuntu 13.10, which worked without problems. In the fresh
install the default video driver setup works out of the box, with the only
problem that 3d accelleration is not supported (but that's a known problem I
guess). (Note: running ubuntu 13.10 from a live usb environment also appeared
to work out of the box, although it was as expected very slow.)

So this bug can be closed as far as I'm concerned.

[Bug 880882] Re: X starts with garbled screen, restarting X from cli fixes

2011-10-24 Thread Jan
Additional info: I was not entirely correct about the poulsbo/psb_gfx
blacklisting combinations. Poulsbo blacklisted and psb_gfx enabled
results in a garbled screen that isn't even fixed by restarting X. All
other combinations result in a garbled X that can be fixed by restarting
X. There is a visible speed difference from enabling poulsbo.

A third bug I had after upgrading to oneric is #880865, resume failure
under kernel 3.0.0, but that appears to be unrelated.
