Not since I upgraded, that's for sure, as I would not have been able to find it with this new environment and I did not know the ccsm command: I just tried it and discovered it was Compiz. Plus, I would not expect Compiz to work any more: isn't it gnome-bound? And before that, the only thing I had done, per my memory, was turning off all visual effects through gnome-appearance-properties, not Compiz: that's a small netbook. Alright, so that's not the problem then. CCSM is a tool a lot of users use to configure some aspects of compiz and its incompatible with a lot of configurations in the newest version of Ubuntu. Compiz itself works fine otherwise, as Unity is built on top of gnome 3, and its still in use for visual effects. Now, there's a couple of things I'd like you to try: First, so we can get some detailed system information attached to this report, could you please run the following command in a terminal, preferably from the session that you are experiencing the problem in: apport-collect 884691 Then, again from the session that unity is broken in, please try this command in a terminal: unity --reset If that doesn't resolve the problem you could try logging into your account from an Ubuntu-2d session, which you can do by clicking the little gear icon on the login screen near your account name (assuming you're running 11.10) and selecting Ubuntu-2d. The unity launcher does not show up at all any more. Exactly like the Start button's bar in Windows when Explorer crashes. The icon at the top right is missing in my account, which is annoying. Thank you for clarifying that. Did you by chance mess around with any settings in CCSM? The unity launcher does auto-hide after some time, are you sure you aren't observing that behavior? Also, could you describe the problem more? I'm not sure how the unity launcher crashing would cause you to have to reboot from the console, as shut down options are available in the top right corner of the screen, separate from the launcher.
