CUPS does not recognize or manage scanners. Scanners are handles by sane-backends. Maciek G, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . Nothing appeared in log file. Device is visible as it is also a printer. I submitted a bug for not being able to print at all https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/700141. It turned out that printer is not post script printer but someone was able to write driver in python for it.
