@Paolo, could you do a little experiment for us? First: 1. Disconnect AC from ultrabook. 2. Close the lid 3. Wait for suspend to complete (blinking blue LED) 4. Connect AC to the ultrabook, wait 5 seconds, disconect it, wait 5 seconds. 5. Do again #4 6. Do again #4 ;) 7. Disconnect AC, open lid, resume from suspend, wait for system to open up. 8. [Bug 986724] Re: Lid state changes not detected on Samsung NP900X3B
Aviram - I am eager to help for what I can. To start with my laptop is an np900x3c-A02Uk not an np900x3b. I documented the detail of my installation here: http://www.math.helsinki.fi/mathphys/paolo_files/ubuntu-pulcio_new.html In brief: I flashed the BIOS update before wiping out completely windows. I do not remember rebooting into windows after the update. I used the ubuntu-Gnome unofficial installation disk for 12.10. I use Gnome-classic without effects. I only use (and rarely) suspend to RAM and did not reserve any static swap on the disk. I do not know whether the lid behavior is affected by the kernel I use (3.6.6) which proved instead useful for what concerns the AC adapter detection. I installed the samsung backlight package but I do not think plays any role here (or, perhaps, at all). I uninstalled the samsung-tools package (I manually edited the Fn keys configuration as Red Hat Bugzilla recommends). I tried several time the script of comment #55 and it reported the lid change of state. Moreover It seems to me that suspends works correctly. I resumed editing this post after putting the laptop to sleep by closing the lid about two hours ago. Battery status reports that I have the same two hours of autonomy (i.e. 35%) that I had before suspension. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/986724 Title: Lid state changes not detected on Samsung NP900X3B To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/986724/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 986724] Re: Lid state changes not detected on Samsung NP900X3B
Paolo - would you mind help pin-pointing the solution? I can confirm that the BIOS update on its own DOES NOT solve the problem (neither kernel 3.6.6-030606-generic nor 3.5.0-19-generic #30-Ubuntu above). There must be something else besides just the BIOS upgrade and the reset pin; did you do anything else, for example: log into windows after the bios upgrade, change a bios settings, installed another package/driver, etc? Also, can you confirm your laptop version is 900xB? BTW: Resetting the battery (using a pin in the hole on the back of the laptop) temporarily solves the charge/discharge detection; this has always been the case (with all BIOS versions since I bought the laptop). The lid detection never worked, though. - Aviram On Sat, Dec 1, 2012 at 5:00 AM, paolo.mgi 986...@bugs.launchpad.net wrote: I am running 12.10 with BIOS P04AAC and Kernel 3.6.6-030606-generic #201211050512 SMP x86_64 GNU/Linux from UpUbuntu which fixes for me bug #971061. Hi, I'm glad to confirm that close on lid is working for me now, with 12.10 fully updated (with proposed repositories enabled), on a NP900X4C model. . For me, the switch to windows is not an option, but I understand that. Ohh Well, I just sent an email to samsung US support alerting them to these issues, It's really a pitty that linux is having this kind of problems with this incredible laptop. Hopefully I was not the only one and samsung will take care of this. What I recommend to you is that, like me, try to alert samsung support, they already have linux kernel developers and with enough emails maybe they will look to us, even not being legally obligated to. I sent an email to 'webhelp...@digitalriver.com' (I know...but at least maybe US samsung support is better than the one in my country). It's really a pitty, otherwise ubuntu flies and shines running in this beautiful machine and I really need ubuntu for my work. Even with this annoying bug I will continue to use it. By the way, I'm also looking closely at https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=44161 and no luck at the moment. It seams that it is an ACPI firmware bug, and if so, we can only hope that samsung will take care of it. [Bug 986724] Re: Lid state changes not detected on Samsung NP900X3B
A quick update: last night I lost ACPI events again, so blacklisting lpc_ich seems not to be a permanent/consistent fix. I plan to continue testing with this module blacklisted, and then with the kernel argument acpi_enforce_resources=strict. It certainly did last significantly longer than usual with the module blacklisted, but I have to verify that it wasn't just a fluke. Aviram/#27: Resetting the laptop can be done by shutting it down normally, unplugging the AC adapter, and sticking a pin into the battery disengage hole on the underside of the laptop. There is a button in the hole which lightly clicks, and it does not have to be held down (pressing it once will suffice). @Aviram #27 Bryan's description is very acurate. @Bryan As I was saying - blacklisting lpc_ich and/or mei module doesn't work for me. Blacklisting lpc end with hanged window manager/decorator, blacklisting mei ends with immediate power hang (no need to wait 6-8 hours). BTW. Precise on a new 2012 NP900X4C (Ivy Bridge), same issues. Confirming #6 as well, lid switch detection worked briefly after a firmware update, but has since stopped working. cat /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID0/state shows that it's always open, no matter the physical state. Also confirming #10, that the machine does not resume on opening the lid (and didn't even when the lid detection was working properly). Hi, I would like to confirm this - very, very annoing error on Samsung NP530U3B-A02PL I changed/compiled new kernel- 3.4.4 stable, tweaked acpid, tweaked /etc/pm/config.d. tweaked laptop-mode - error still exists. [Bug 986724] Re: Lid state changes not detected on Samsung NP900X3B
I'm seeing the exact same behaviour as Alistair on an NP530U3B. The curious thing is that after pressing the magic reset button all works well for a while. Under Linux the lid switch works, the laptop sleeps just fine and nothing I can do seems to break it. A day or two later, it mysteriously stops generating ACPI events (according to acpi_listen) and it take a press of the reset button to get it all working. [Bug 986724] Re: Lid state changes not detected on Samsung NP900X3B
I have an additional problem on my dual-boot U12.04/Win7 machine. I need to have both on this machine. I need to have access to software that will not run on and has no equivalent on Linux. If I boot Ubuntu and then Windows, the lid-close suspend does not then work on Windows either! The only cure is to shut down, and then stick a pin in the tiny hole in the bottom of the machine that causes some sort of extra-hard shutdown. This suggests to me that somehow, the Linux kernel (or some other bit of GNU/Linux/Ubuntu software) seems to be breaking the lid switch. As an aside, if you do this hard shutdown, it is not possible to get the machine going again unless it is connected to mains power. If it is on battery, the on-switch has no effect. This has nothing to do with Ubuntu/Linux - this seems to be a design feature of the machine.
