Re: [Bug 1810630] Re: Boot up is hung on a purple screen

2019-01-11 Thread Alexander A Theiler
Ok, so I totally reinstalled Ubuntu 18.04.1. On its first fresh boot ever,
it hung at the purple screen, before a login screen should have been
displayed. I was able to use the workaround for bug 1727356 by
uncommenting "WaylandEnable=false" and again rebooted. It still hung at
the purple screen, and no login screen was ever displayed. I checked to
ensure that no PPAs were installed, and there are 0 results.

The problem of hanging at a purple screen on boot continues despite a full,
fresh re-install of Ubuntu without any PPAs installed.

I have been able to boot fully into Ubuntu, so long as I have had a failed
boot before. Just like before.

I've created and attached new files of the same things you've asked for
before: my new failedboot.txt, and my new allpackages.txt. Is there
anything else you need to diagnose this problem?

Please advise.

PPAs were so dangerous and will certainly avoid them in the future.

Re: [Bug 1810630] Re: Boot up is hung on a purple screen

2019-01-10 Thread Alexander A Theiler
Thank you for the help.

In fact, the first bug I found, after a fresh install of Ubuntu 18.04.1,
was actually that the computer was hanging at the purple screen on boot. I
attempted to fix this problem by installing video driver PPAs and setting
"nomodeset" on grub. I mistakenly thought this fixed the problem, as I was
able to boot into Ubuntu and get past the purple screen on boot. However,
the video card was then listed as llvmp and the resolutions could not be
changed. That's when I reached out to you.

So, I'm a little hesitant to re-install Ubuntu, as the problem of hanging
at the purple screen on boot was actually the first issue I ran into,
immediately after a fresh install. I feel that re-installing Ubuntu will
not fix the problem; it will only take me back to square one. Does that
make sense?

I was able to get ppa-purge to work, and I removed all the PPAs that I
could think of. Here is a new file of allpackages.txt. Is there any
evidence of PPAs left on the system?

Thanks for your help,

Alex

Re: [Bug 1810630] Re: Boot up is hung on a purple screen

2019-01-09 Thread Alexander A Theiler
Thank you for the guidance. I actually installed these PPA's early on, in
an effort to get around hanging at the purple screen on boot.

I was unable to use ppa-purge. Perhaps my syntax was wrong? Instead, I
have removed all the PPAs through Software & Updates. Or was there just
one PPA that needed to be removed?

I restarted the computer, and it again hung at the purple screen when
booting up. I think all the PPA's are gone, but cannot be sure. Is there
an easy way to find out?

Thank you

Alex

Re: [Bug 1810630] Re: Boot up is hung on a purple screen

2019-01-09 Thread Alexander A Theiler
1. Please see attached for another documented failed boot, saved as
failedboot2.txt.

2. There were no files named xorg.conf in /etc

3. Custom.conf is attached as well.

Thank you

Alex

Re: [Bug 1810630] Re: Boot up is hung on a purple screen

2019-01-08 Thread Alexander A Theiler
Great idea. I didn't know you could get the recording from boots that were
done previously.

I reproduced a failed boot, and then a successful boot. Please find
attached "failedboot.txt" and just for fun, I recorded the successful boot
as well. It is attached as "successfulboot.txt"

Also find attached my /etc/default/grub file as well.

You have been extremely helpful in all this, and I really appreciate it.

Cheers,

Alex
