Sorry, not running ubuntu on same box again, cannot try to duplicate the situation. Re: [Bug 68772] Re: Ubuntu 6.10 Hangs at Restart
i have taken a different approach, just to say that now my restart works. the change is quite drastic though. i upgraded to feisty, and then installed the 2.6.19-5-generic kernel, which restarts fine. so this is a temporary workaround, although those seeking stability will probably opt to stay with 6.06 if they have this restarting problem. i don't have a problem with being a feisty tester, as i don't have anything important in my ubuntu partition. just to let you guys know of my current situation. :) On 11/14/06, RedBird [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Same here.. I have HP Pavilion a420.me and I have the same problem. Everything works just fine, except for the restarting process. I've checked if the LiveCD is different than the installed Ubuntu.. but it has the same problem. I check the CD in a different PC which has Mercury motherboard in it. It works just fine. I've also tried the 'acpi=force' thing.. but nothing happened.. I decided to go back to Ubuntu 6.06 LTS and upgrade everything except to Ubuntu 6.10. Won't there be an update to fix this problem? -- Ubuntu 6.10 Hangs at Restart https://launchpad.net/bugs/68772 -- Ubuntu 6.10 Hangs at Restart https://launchpad.net/bugs/68772 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
Re: [Bug 68772] Re: Ubuntu 6.10 Hangs at Restart
Well the only changes I have made to my xorg.conf file is that i've changed my driver from mesa to the fglrx driver, and it works peerfectly. also, i've added more screen resolutions to that file, and at the end of it, i added another section which says: Section Extensions Option Composite 0 EndSection I have also installed XGL/Beryl, flawlessly I might add, but this restarting problem occured before and after all of these chnages to my xorg.conf. I've never changed my GDM. On 10/28/06, Nicolas DERIVE [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Is your Xserver configuration has changed ? Or your gdm conf ? Re: [Bug 68772] Re: Ubuntu 6.10 Hangs at Restart
Well i've never tried disabling usplash for my default kernel, but when in the recovery mode kernel, i also have this problem (and there's no usplash on the recovery mode kernel). On 10/28/06, Nicolas DERIVE [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Sorry, I hadn't understand exactly your problem. Do you have ever try with disabling usplash ? If it does any changes, it could be an upstart problem anyway. -- Ubuntu 6.10 Hangs at Restart https://launchpad.net/bugs/68772 -- Ubuntu 6.10 Hangs at Restart https://launchpad.net/bugs/68772 -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Re: [Bug 68772] Re: Ubuntu 6.10 Hangs at Restart
Okay I tried pressing Alt+SysRq+1 and Alt+SysRq+t at the time of the hang, but I noticed that my keyboard turns off at this time, so I cannot press any keys, as no power is coming into the keyboard. i will reply to you with the output of the 'reboot' command from recovery mode. Re: [Bug 68772] Re: Ubuntu 6.10 Hangs at Restart
Okay, I wrote down the ouput. This is from the recovery mode cosole: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# reboot [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~# init: rcS-sulogin process (4037) killed by signal 15. * Stopping GNOME Display Manager * Stopping Common Unix Printing System: cupsd * Stopping System Tools Backends system-tools-backends * Stopping Avahi mDNS/DNS-SD Daemon: avahi-daemon * Stopping Hardware Abstraction Layer hald * Stopping system message bus dbus * Stopping HP Linux Printing and Imaging System * Shutting down ALSA... * Terminating all remaining processes... * Unmounting temporary filesystems... * Will now restart [17179661.268000] Restarting System. And that's it, it just hangs there. Just to note, I've heard of this problem happening not only on i386 but also on PowerPC computers. There are similar bugs like this on launchpad, which you've probably already noticed; they're mostly here i guess: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+bugs?field.tag=acpi thanks for all your help.
