I don't disagree, but thought it worth adding:

I wasn't worried about the super user being malicious, but rather the
script writer (accidentally or deliberately) created a script where it
would behave correctly and everyone used it, unless you set GREP_OPTIONS
where a feature that, when invoked deliberately was a good feature,
would cause destruction or the like.

[Bug 75047] does not enumerate domain groups nested under domain groups

2006-12-08 Thread Brazen
Public bug reported:

This is when attaching a Samba file server to a Windows 2000 Active
Directory domain:

User U is member of domain global group A. Group A is a member of
domain global group B. Group B is assigned permissions to a share, but
user U is unable to use those permissions. Furthermore, "wbinfo -r U"
and "getent group" do not show the user as a member or group B. If
user U is added directly to group B, then the permissions are applied
fine.

This is with Samba 2.0.22 and winbind from the apt repo for Dapper. In
troubleshooting I installed the 3.0.23d deb packages from the Samba
website for Sarge, and it works fine - user U acts a member of group B
as it should through the hierarchy. I changed nothing else, only
removed the Dapper samba, samba-common, and winbind packages and
installed the Sarge packages, so this bug must have been fixed with the
newer release.

Some more information: I was working with another Ubuntu server
administrator with this same setup. We went through our configurations
and we both set up our Ubuntu servers the same, but his worked fine with
the nested groups and mine did not. We can only deduce that the
difference is in our domains: for one thing, my was converted (years
ago) from a mixed-mode domain to native-mode, but his had always been
native mode.

Regardless this is fixed in the newer version, so it is something that
is fixed in Samba. It would be nice to have this bug fixed in the
version of Samba in the apt repo for Dapper.

[Bug 75045] USB Devices Freeze Randomly

2006-12-08 Thread Jason F. Kotenko
Public bug reported:

This bug has been experienced in Dapper and Edgy.

At random intervals, USB devices will freeze. This includes a Microsoft
Trackball Mouse, a Dell Keyboard, and a Wacom Graphics Tablet. The
devices only freeze during use, so the mouse will freeze when you are
moving it, the keyboard will freeze on a keypress (so that key is
repeated infinitely until you unplug and replug the keyboard).

I can fix the freeze by unplugging and replugging the device.

I cannot at this time reproduce the bug, it happens at (seemingly)
random intervals.

No messages are put out to /var/log/syslog or /var/log/messages on the
freeze. I have verified this several times.

Below is output for lspci:

Thanks for your report. This appears to be the same as
http://bugs.debian.org/355794 and/or http://bugs.debian.org/307068, and
should be fixed in mouseemu 0.15-3, which is in edgy.

mouseemu (0.15-3) unstable; urgency=low

  * The kudos to Michael Schmitz release!
  * example section in manpage (closes: #354148)
  * close all devices and trigger a rescan if a device
disapears (closes: #355794, #307068)
  * rescan for new devices every 5s (off by default)
  * manually rescan for new devices on HUP
  * output messages to syslog
  * create pidfile /var/run/mouseemu.pid
  * scan up to 32 event devices (closes: #326486)
  * increase delay between stoping and starting mouseemu
on restart to give it more time to stop all processes
  * add a udev rules file to rescan for new devices
  * add --retry to start-stop-daemon on stopping to make sure
mouseemu really stops
  * add preinst script to ensure that mouseemu is really stopped

[Bug 59942] Re: debconf frontend fell over

2006-12-08 Thread Henrik Nilsen Omma
The only way you would be able to get the files in that case would be if
you reproduced the install procedure again (with the crash) and uploaded
the files from the Live CD before turning off the machine.

To upload the files you need to run firefox from the Live CD session
where the installer crashed, isit this page
https://bugs.launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/59942
and click on 'Add a comment/attachment' at the bottom of the page. Click
Browse and navigate to the requested files in /var/log.

[Bug 75051] Restart doesn't work in Kubuntu 6.10

2006-12-08 Thread mikeXYZ
Public bug reported:

(I'm new to Linux)
I downloaded and installed Kubuntu 6.10 on 11-18-06.

If I try to click the Re-start button (in the shutdown menu from
K-menu), it looks like it is going to re-start, but actually the screen
just goes black and sits there . . . until I manually press the reset
button on my PC case.

So, I've been using at Terminal, sudo shutdown -r now.

My hardware is mainstream:
Intel D915GAVL mobo with embedded graphics (Intel GMA, Graphic Media
Accelerator), Intel CPU (530J 3 GHz), two Seagate SATA 160 HDDS, 17-inch
CRT--NEC AccySync 750F, and a Sony DVD+/-RW optical drive.

[Bug 75017] Re: SRU request: remove /.hidden file

2006-12-08 Thread Luka Renko
This patch changes k-d-s to not install /etc/kubuntu-default-settings
/hidden-root anymore and removes /.hidden symbolic link in case it
points to hidden-root file.

I have tested this on up-to-date Kubuntu Edgy i386 and have simulated different
combinations of /.hidden file:
- /.hidden does not exist
- /.hidden is symbolic link, but points elsewhere
- /.hidden is regular file
- /.hidden points to /etc/kubuntu-default-settings/hidden-root

Only last case removes /.hidden symbolic link and gives user back pre-
edgy state.

[Bug 75052] [feisty] non-working initramfs: failed to activate RAID

2006-12-08 Thread Aurelien Naldi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: initramfs-tools

I have just upgraded my system to feisty and it can not boot on the new kernel.
My old kernels are still fine.
After some checking, it looks like the mdadm script into the initramfs are not
functionnal.

By adding the "break=mount" kernel option I got a shell in the initramfs, where
I get the error: "mdadm: ' not identified in config file"
the config file looks fine, even the one in the initramfs, only /dev/md0 is
defined.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug. Unfortunately, we are
not able to fix and find the bug because your description of the bug
didn't have enough information in it.

In particulare, what's the problem? Kompare work integrated on Krusader
and let to compare two directories.

You may find it helpful to read
"How to report bugs effectively",

We'd be grateful if you would then provide a more complete description
of the problem.

In fact, with k3b it actually _is_ possible to burn DVDs. The bug I
encountered in k3b happens when you want to copy (clone) a DVD and you
select the button for copying a CD from the main screen. Choosing "Copy
DVD" from the menu works.

Wishlist: If it's easily possible to detect the media, the button to
copy a CD should start the right task for CD and DVD.

[Bug 75017] Re: SRU request: remove /.hidden file

2006-12-08 Thread Luka Renko
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: kubuntu-default-settings

Kubuntu Edgy has introduced new "feature": by default, all directories
in / are hidden, beside /home and /media. Main reason was to hide stuff
that would typically not be needed by typical user. This was implemented
as part of media:/ simplifications (media:/ was major issue in dapper).

  More details:
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KubuntuKDEMedia
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KubuntuHiddenFiles

- During the beta cycles, there was no complaints that this might be an issue
(or people were willing to accept this "simplification"), but after the release
of Edgy, when most of existing Kubuntu user base has upgraded, we were faced by
several bugs (bug 68719, 67582, 67314) and several heated discussions on IRC
and Ubuntu mailing list:
+ During the beta cycles, there was no complaints that this might be an issue

  https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-devel/2006-October/021460.html

Note: this also impacts GNOME users with kubuntu-desktop installed as
GNOME file dialogs/browser also respect .hidden file.

Since we had Celeste Lyn Paul from KDE Usability on UDS MtView, this feature
was reviewed again and it was decided that hiding files in / is really not so
good idea, as it may confuse current Linux users as well as complicate support
for new Linux users. For example when users are asked by bug triage/support/irc
to provide some file from /etc or /var/log and they cannot browse there with
Konqueror or regular file open dialog (to attach the file).
This is why it was decided that the "feature" should be dropped for Feisty
(and is already in Feisty):
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KubuntuFeistyDefaultSettingsReview

Since we still get new complaints from Edgy users, we have discussed
this on Kubuntu meeting on Dec 7 and it was agreed it would make sense
to backport this to Edgy. This "bug" may not be seen immediately as
complying with requirements set in StableReleaseUpdates, but we think
that it is seen as severe regression by our users (even though that
  workarounds exists) and complicates support.
