[Bug 172973] Re: I can't update my files for my computer

2007-12-03 Thread Jamie Strandboge
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Bug 139062] Re: Gutsy Tribe5: Startup reports: cman_tool: aisexec daemon didn't start

2007-12-03 Thread Herbert Straub
I'm missing the Openais log entries. I should find always the start

Service RELEASE 's ubrev 1358 version 0.80.3'. Ubuntu using the 0.82.0

system is the problem. If i removed aisexec_tty_detach () in
exec/main.c, then I can see all log entries in syslog and in
/var/log/openais/aisexec.log. It looks like, that the logsys hangs after
the fork in aisexec_tty_detach ().

My versions:
ii openais0.82-0ubuntu6 Standards-based cluster framework (daemon an
ii redhat-cluster 2.20071022-0ub red hat cluster suite (meta package)
and a X86_64 system.

I see, the stable release o Openais is 0.80. Any ideas, how we can get
the Openais logsys component working? Backstep to 0.80?

[Bug 120375] Re: cannot boot raid1 with only one disk

2007-12-03 Thread Fumihito YOSHIDA
Dear brunus,

The problem is not solved in 7.04/7.10.

You have to use raid_degraded grub entry with
/etc/initramfs-tools/scripts/init-premount/raid_degraded way.
(and update your initramfs, execute sudo update-initramfs -u)

And, I test with 7.10, mdadm_2.6.2-1ubuntu2_arch.deb(7.10's) *does not work*
in this way.
When you use 7.10, please down-grade mdadm package.

Use 7.04's mdadm package: mdadm_2.5.6-7ubuntu5_arch.deb.

[Bug 173692] jars included with tomcat break jaxp

2007-12-03 Thread Craig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tomcat5.5

When deploying a war which uses Spring WS, the application will fail to work
correctly, raising this error:
Class not found: org.springframework.xml.xpath.Jaxp13XPathExpressionFactory
I assume that other applications may also fail with similar class not found
exceptions, too.
The jar that contains this class is in the war (the jar is
spring-xml-1.0.2.jar).
After much web searching, I ran across this page:
http://brian.pontarelli.com/2007/10/15/ubuntu-gusty-and-tomcat-55/ Following
those directions, I deleted /usr/share/tomcat5.5/common/endorsed/*, restarted
tomcat, and now the application works.

Stock Tomcat 5.5 does not include those the jars that Ubuntu does in its
/usr/share/tomcat5.5/common/endorsed/ directory. Perhaps those jars
should not be included in this package?

I'm running Ubuntu Gutsy, Tomcat 5.5, and JDK6.

Thanks!

[Bug 172669] Re: Rhythmbox doesn't scrobble tracks that are played from queue

2007-12-03 Thread Evgeny nekr0z Kuznetsov
Thanks for your reply, Pedro. I checked it with a clean user, and it
worked just fine. Removing ~/.gnome2/rhythmbox from my own home
directory resulted in a perfect result as well. Bad news is that I have
occasionally removed that directory completely instead of backing it up,
so I doubt it would be possible to track down what went wrong.

I think it wise to close this bug, unless somebody else bumps into the
same problem. And, for convenience, I'm running Rhythmbox 0.11.2 on
Ubuntu 7.10 64bit.

[Bug 163862] Re: KVM dies after resuming from suspend

2007-12-03 Thread Graeme Humphries
Wow, things have been busy this month. Anyway, I finally had a chance to
do some testing today, and looks like the hints on the other bug are
correct. If I remove the module before suspend and then re-insert after,
KVM works fine. Also, surprisingly, if I remove and re-add it *after*
I've had a KVM-app crash (due to not removing it before suspend) that
*also* clears it up. So working in an unload / reload into the power
management scripts should fix this issue right up. The only problem
would be if there's a suspend and a KVM app is still running, I imagine
that would cause all sorts of problems, since you wouldn't very well be
able to remove the modules while they're in use.

I'm also attaching a full dmesg log of my latest crash test.

[Bug 172695] Re: update-manager has root privileges after sudo was used

2007-12-03 Thread Bogdan Butnaru
Good point about gksudo. But I'm not sure I understand Roberto's answer:

I know that sudo doesn't time out for a while, and that's OK. I expect
to be able to run several apps with sudo and enter the password just
once. What concerns me is that this is applied to applications that are
_not_ run with sudo. That is, if I run:

$ sudo first-app
[enter password]
$ sudo second-app
[no password]
$ third-app
[no password, of course]

Then I wouldn't expect the third-app to get super-user privileges just
because it runs a sub-process with sudo. It should only apply to apps
where I manually specify sudo on the command line.

It's not generally a good idea to put non-versioned files in library
packages - it makes upgrades difficult if the library version ever
changes, because you wouldn't be able to have two versions of the
library installed on the system at once, even temporarily. tcpd is tiny

[Bug 160420] Re: Local devices don't work because an X11 authentication problem

2007-12-03 Thread Ronald van Engelen
Giovanni (and others),

Could you please enlighten me about the proposed procedure (` .. so
don't login with 'ssh -X user' .. `). How can I prevent this from
happening; which files need to be patched?

The bug starts to be real problem (we are working around it since gutsy
got releases).

Thanks,

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu

cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.

[Bug 141396] Re: ipw3945 hangs intermittently on Thinkpad T61

2007-12-03 Thread Per Heldal
Hardware encryption seems to improve stability for the iwl3945 module.

put
options iwl3945 hwcrypto=1
in a file in /etc/modutils.d (ex create a file called iwl3945)

With default software-crypto my test-computer would hang randomly after
transmitting anywhere between a few MB up to 1 or 2 GB. With hardware-
crypto enabled I just completed a test-transfer of 40GB+

[Bug 57707] Re: System crashes totally many times when acceding to vfat partitions

2007-12-03 Thread hexion
My problems with these kind of freezes went lower until almost
dissapear, but were still there with edgy, feisty, and now with gutsy.

I read some info in a webpage, and tried one last thing:
sudo tune2fs -e continue /dev/MYEXT3PARTITION

The reason is that I think I can have random little issues with my
hardware (I don't know if with my HDD or the adapter), and by default if
the kernel finds anything bad it's set to panic itself. That option sets
the partition to not panic the kernel.

Till now, I haven't experimented any other freeze from then.

[Bug 145244] Re: [gutsy] libXft library - undefined symbol FT_Library_SetLcdFilter

2007-12-03 Thread jneubarth
Hi,
thanks to Martin for the proposed workaround :-)
I just upgraded from Kubuntu Feisty to Gutsy and encountered this very same
error.
In addition, I had similar errors with other libraries:

- trying to use synaptic:
synaptic: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libcairo.so.2: undefined symbol:
FT_Library_SetLcdFilter

- trying to use eclipse:
/usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun-1.6.0.00/bin/java: symbol lookup error:
/home/johannes/.eclipse/org.eclipse.platform_3.2.0/configuration/org.eclipse.osgi/bundles/57/1/.cp/libswt-mozilla-gtk-3236.so:

Especially the second bug bothers me since I don't know how to downgrade
libswt-mozilla-gtk-3236.so...

Would be thankful for any help,
Johannes Neubarth

enough information. You may find it helpful to read How to report bugs

grateful if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems.

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the

[Bug 141396] Re: ipw3945 hangs intermittently on Thinkpad T61

2007-12-03 Thread Per Heldal
Funny it's not been mentioned yet in this thread, but the iwlwifi
drivers in gutsy are rather old. Changelogs from intellinuxwireless.org
describe heaps of serious bugs that have been squashed recently. Those
fixes should IMHO make it into the next revision of the linux-ubuntu-
modules package. There's also a lot of annoying bugs in gutsy's current
kernel, so maybe there's a hope for an updated kernel and modules
shortly.

[Bug 173704] Too big screen resolution on startup

Public bug reported:

I have a strange bug in Kubuntu 7.10. I have set monitor resolution in
systemsettings to 1280x960 in both normal user mode and in root mode.
For some reason kubuntu behaves strangely in the login screen. If I wait
some seconds in the login screen before logging in, the monitor goes
into power save mode after just few seconds. And then when I log in the
desktop is in 2048x1536 pixels though the monitor shows only ~800x600
part of the desktop. After logging out and logging back in this problem
goes usually away.

Also changing the screen resolution in the settings has no affect before
logging out and logging back in.

[Bug 173701] kdevelop should open folded code in case of search match

Binary package hint: kdevelop

I'm using gutsy.

if I fold some function, and then try to search some text within that

wanted behavior: if there's a match somewhere in a folded section of the
text, kdevelop should unfold it and highlight the match (as is does when

change to the code, kdevelop should fold that section (to restore to its

I've encountered this bug on gutsy. My machine never had this bug on
feisty, and after the upgrade I left 1.0.3 installed. Today I saw the
1.0.4-1gutsy1 package for gutsy in the partner repository, and after
upgrading to it, aptitude and update-notifier still want to upgrade it

[Bug 59908] Re: identify command requires mpeg2decode

2007-12-03 Thread Ed S
I believe mpeg2decode in this case is the old and abandoned reference
decoder available from http://www.mpeg.org/MPEG/video/mssg-free-mpeg-
software.html

It seems to be copyright but freely distributable.

I believe the invocation will attempt to identify all frames, which could take
a long time. I'd suggest identify shouldn't try to do this operation in this
way. I notice that 'file' is able to identify some *mpg files:
mpeg_target_practice.mpg: MPEG sequence, v1, progressive Y'CbCr 4:2:0 video,
SVCD NTSC 525, 30 fps
cbp.mpg: MPEG sequence, CIF NTSC, 29.97 fps
and is perhaps a better tactic (and dependency)

[Bug 173517] Re: ubuntu gutsy 7.10 / compiz / second xscreen / no keyboard

2007-12-03 Thread marriouss
Update: regarding keyboard on second screen - If I open a terminal I cannot
input any command, but on the menus I can move around with the arrow keys.
the mouse pointer on the second screen is an X.

Now the weird part: If I go on the second screen and set the visual
effects from None to Normal and back to None, I'll have compiz disabled
on both screens but with borders and keyboard working fine on both. If I
re-enable compiz on the first (main) screen then compiz will work
perfectly on the first screen, no compiz on the second, but now the
second screen behaves great, with window borders and keyboard input.

If I can attach any log, please do tell me and I'll gladly do it.

Many thanks,
M

[Bug 173709] apparmor with klogd in enforce mode, causes kdm to fail during initial launch on Hardy Heron

2007-12-03 Thread Roderick Greening
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: apparmor

Upon upgrading to Hardy Heron via sudo adept_manager --dist-upgrade-
devel, I found that KDM would fail to launch when in Runlevel 2 (KDM
should automatically start in this level).

If I login and issue sudo /etc/init.d/kdm start, then KDM launches
successfully.

The last app/service to start just prior to this was klogd. I noticed
that with the Hardy Heron update, klogd was in enforce mode under
apparmor, and provided a complaint in the log as follows:

[ 26.284000] audit(1196704494.632:3): type=1502
operation=inode_permission requested_mask=r denied_mask=r
name=/proc/kallsyms pid=5088 profile=/sbin/klogd

So, it would appear that apparmor and klogd had somehow prevent KDM from
launching during boot (not sure if additional services would be impacted
if launched after klogd, other than KDM, which was easy to identify.

To resolve the issue, I have temporarily placed klogd into complain
mode, and rebooted. KDM now launches correctly.

Two points:

1) apparmor wrappers like this shouldn't cause KDM to fail (IMHO). How
can this be addressed so as to allow KDM to at least launch when an app
is in complain mode (like klogd). KDM is a must under Kubuntu.

2) What is the correct fix to apparmor/klogd based on my error message
below? I know that bumping back to complain mode does nothing for
security, but it got me up again. I'd like a permanent/proper fix.

Thanks.

[Bug 164972] Re: upgrade feisty gutsy ati radeon 9200 problem

2007-12-03 Thread Denis_AeC
Back on Gutsy ;-) ...

Started again from the beginning : my Gutsy partimage, with messy video, just
from Feisty upgrade.
Before booting on this Gutsy :
- saved the xorg.conf as ... initial
- modified xorg.conf to add BusType PCI, and remove 2 lines for HorizSync
VertRefresh

Boot on Gutsy : video in 800*600, impossible to modify during setting or under
normal session (I probably succeeded at that point in changing the monitor as
Hyunday 17)
Change to driver dpkg -i xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.6.3-2ubuntu6_i386.deb that
I finally found, instead of the 6.7.195 version. No change in user session,
still 800*600. May be changed to 17 Hyundai at that point (or previously ?).
Reboot : Gutsy is OK ! 1280*1024 / 60 Hz . Hyundai DeLuxe17 (instead of L70s
as before), 6.6.3 driver in Synaptic

I will now perform a partimage from this Gutsy, in case of ...

Anything else (like the dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg ... or
6.7.195 driver) ?

[Bug 173679] Re: [gutsy] Safely removing USB pendisk makes icon disappear from Desktop

2007-12-03 Thread Dario Teixeira
Thanks for your reply. Though I'm really dumbstruck how behaviour
that's confusing and wrong could be intentionally designed into a system
under the guise of user-friendliness. Even more so because I just
noticed that if instead of a USB pendisk you plug-in a larger USB drive,
the behaviour is correct! How is this inconsistency supposed to be
user-friendly?

Moreover, in the long term you're in for a world of hurt if you start conceding
on wrong design choices due to a poor assessment of
usability. It makes systems more complex, error-prone, and yes -- far less
user-friendly!

I still maintain this is a bug. And apparently one that is far more
serious than I first imagined. From which package does it come from?

2007-12-03 Thread CACLF
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: tcsh

If one types in the command setenv A B | printenv the environment is printed
out, A is not set to B as expected, but one gets NULL:~ NULL:~ as the line
following the printed out environment. NULL in this case is the hostname.
Admittedly one is unlikely to wish to give such a command, but csh itself does
not have this problem and only prints a single prompt '%'.

** Affects: tcsh (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Bug 173639] Re: bash: export:

2007-12-03 Thread Basilio Kublik
Hi there
this doesn't seems to be a bug nor a question so i'm closing the report
according to that, if you indeed try to report a bug, please provide a detailed
description of the current and desired behavior and the steps to reproduce it
as well. Then just re-open the bug report changing the status to New.

Thanks

Raising the limits to 20 allows gringotts to start. I did not check
