[Bug 163862] Re: KVM dies after resuming from suspend
Wow, things have been busy this month. Anyway, I finally had a chance to do some testing today, and looks like the hints on the other bug are correct. If I remove the module before suspend and then re-insert after, KVM works fine. Also, surprisingly, if I remove and re-add it *after* I've had a KVM-app crash (due to not removing it before suspend) that *also* clears it up. So working in an unload / reload into the power management scripts should fix this issue right up. The only problem would be if there's a suspend and a KVM app is still running, I imagine that would cause all sorts of problems, since you wouldn't very well be able to remove the modules while they're in use. Good point about gksudo. But I'm not sure I understand Roberto's answer: I know that sudo doesn't time out for a while, and that's OK. I expect to be able to run several apps with sudo and enter the password just once. What concerns me is that this is applied to applications that are _not_ run with sudo. That is, if I run: $ sudo first-app [enter password] $ sudo second-app [no password] $ third-app [no password, of course] Then I wouldn't expect the third-app to get super-user privileges just because it runs a sub-process with sudo. [Bug 57707] Re: System crashes totally many times when acceding to vfat partitions
My problems with these kind of freezes went lower until almost dissapear, but were still there with edgy, feisty, and now with gutsy. I read some info in a webpage, and tried one last thing: sudo tune2fs -e continue /dev/MYEXT3PARTITION The reason is that I think I can have random little issues with my hardware (I don't know if with my HDD or the adapter), and by default if the kernel finds anything bad it's set to panic itself. Funny it's not been mentioned yet in this thread, but the iwlwifi drivers in gutsy are rather old. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: apparmor Upon upgrading to Hardy Heron via sudo adept_manager --dist-upgrade- devel, I found that KDM would fail to launch when in Runlevel 2 (KDM should automatically start in this level). If I login and issue sudo /etc/init.d/kdm start, then KDM launches successfully. The last app/service to start just prior to this was klogd. I noticed that with the Hardy Heron update, klogd was in enforce mode under apparmor, and provided a complaint in the log as follows: [ 26.284000] audit(1196704494.632:3): type=1502 operation=inode_permission requested_mask=r denied_mask=r name=/proc/kallsyms pid=5088 profile=/sbin/klogd So, it would appear that apparmor and klogd had somehow prevent KDM from launching during boot (not sure if additional services would be impacted if launched after klogd, other than KDM, which was easy to identify. To resolve the issue, I have temporarily placed klogd into complain mode, and rebooted. KDM now launches correctly. Two points: 1) apparmor wrappers like this shouldn't cause KDM to fail (IMHO). How can this be addressed so as to allow KDM to at least launch when an app is in complain mode (like klogd). KDM is a must under Kubuntu. 2) What is the correct fix to apparmor/klogd based on my error message below? I know that bumping back to complain mode does nothing for security, but it got me up again. I'd like a permanent/proper fix. Thanks. ** Affects: apparmor (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- apparmor with klogd in enforce mode, causes kdm to fail during initial launch on Hardy Heron https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/173709 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 164972] Re: upgrade feisty gutsy ati radeon 9200 problem
Back on Gutsy ;-) ... Started again from the beginning : my Gutsy partimage, with messy video, just from Feisty upgrade. Before booting on this Gutsy : - saved the xorg.conf as ... initial - modified xorg.conf to add BusType PCI, and remove 2 lines for HorizSync VertRefresh Boot on Gutsy : video in 800*600, impossible to modify during setting or under normal session (I probably succeeded at that point in changing the monitor as Hyunday 17) Change to driver dpkg -i xserver-xorg-video-ati_6.6.3-2ubuntu6_i386.deb that I finally found, instead of the 6.7.195 version. No change in user session, still 800*600. May be changed to 17 Hyundai at that point (or previously ?). Reboot : Gutsy is OK ! 1280*1024 / 60 Hz . Hyundai DeLuxe17 (instead of L70s as before), 6.6.3 driver in Synaptic I will now perform a partimage from this Gutsy, in case of ... [Bug 173679] Re: [gutsy] Safely removing USB pendisk makes icon disappear from Desktop
Thanks for your reply. Though I'm really dumbstruck how behaviour that's confusing and wrong could be intentionally designed into a system under the guise of user-friendliness. Even more so because I just noticed that if instead of a USB pendisk you plug-in a larger USB drive, the behaviour is correct! How is this inconsistency supposed to be user-friendly? Moreover, in the long term you're in for a world of hurt if you start conceding on wrong design choices due to a poor assessment of usability. It makes systems more complex, error-prone, and yes -- far less user-friendly! I still maintain this is a bug. And apparently one that is far more serious than I first imagined.
