[Bug 139107] Re: OpenGL uses 100% CPU without Sync To VBlank

2008-01-19 Thread unimatrix
OK yes I understand the theory.
And now that you mention this, I've done some tests.
Your theory is correct on dual-core systems.
I've tested my laptop with some OpenGL games: Quake 3, Sauerbraten, Frets On
Fire, Stepmania, Tux Racer, Armagetron.
They performed quite nicely, the CPU load was distributed among the 2 cores.
The problem begins when I test the same games on a single-core system. The CPU
goes up to 100% with almost every game. That's right, it's not just glxgears
(everything what you've said is true about it)
Anyway, it seems like the Ubuntu kernel is somehow optimized for dual-cores.
This can still be considered a bug.

[Bug 139107] Re: OpenGL uses 100% CPU without Sync To VBlank

2008-01-19 Thread UK-sHaDoW
That has nothing to do kernel optimization.

The game has to be core aware in the game code to be able to utilize the
second core. Otherwise it can only use 1 core instead of the whole 2. 1
is half of 2, so the game will only be able to use 50% throughput.

Only really new games are core aware(Multi-Threaded), but if you tried one it
should go up 100% rather than 50%. All other single threaded applications will
use 50%

When you wan to remove the USB stick, please right click on the icon of the USB

remove the USB stick without warnings and your data should be on the USB stick.
Please let us know if that solves the problem.

By the way, just because it using a higher percentage of cpu, its not
really bad thing. If the same game running at 50% or 100%, the game
with 100% usage would be getting a lot more fps, with the trade off of
hogging the cpu off other applications.

2008-01-19 Thread jerrylamos
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 181892 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/181892

This won't shut down bug cropped up on Feisty in the middle of February
on the early builds just after a whole load of stuff from Debian got
dumped on Ubuntu, as far as I can see replacing good code with defective
code. Not that I can perceive that fast, but it seems to me that the
"power off" signal is now much shorter than it had been.

It hasn't been fixed on Feisty, or Gutsy, or Hardy Alpha. Whatever
developer is responsible hasn't been motivated yet. The Edgy code
certainly worked so they do have a fix if they wanted to use it.

The temporary workaround I described on 2007-08-23 has to be applied
with each install. I don't expect hardly any "ordinary desktop user" to
know about or apply such a fix.

As I remember I did poke around on Feisty and saw that the code that did
"power off" was different and larger than it had been for Dapper, Edgy,
and early Feisty.

Don't hold your breath.

Jerry

[Bug 184492] xserver-xorg-core update breaks suspend in gutsy

2008-01-19 Thread Alex
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-core

Summary:
I just installed the recent update to xserver-xorg-core (Version
2:1.3.0.0.dfsg-12ubuntu8.3) and the suspend on my laptop stopped working.

Steps to repeat:
I would open the lid, type my password, and my session would open, but after a
few seconds the whole system would freeze up, I couldn't even use
ctrl-alt-backspace!

Temporary Fix:
I solved the problem by forcing the previous version in Synaptic (select the
package, then go to Package - Force Version and select the previous version in
the list), however I am a little concerned about doing that as it was an
"Important Security Update" fixing things such as memory corruption.

Additional Information:
Microsoft recently did a press release about how corrupted header information
in Word and Excel files that corrupted system memory was a big security risk,
but I don't know if those are related. There was another post about an update
to version 8.2 and how it broke Java applications
(http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=671020) but apparently update 8.3
fixed that, I also don't know if they are related.

name=romita)
[ 2277.091327] lockd: host garbage collection
[ 2277.091328] lockd: nlmsvc_mark_resources

Nothing more is seen from the lockd after the start of the GC. Looking
at earlier GC runs from the syslog, the pattern is:

[ 2037.388911] lockd: nlm_lookup_host(192.168.1.210, p=6, v=4, my role=server,
name=romita)
[ 2037.388914] lockd: host garbage collection
[ 2037.388916] lockd: nlmsvc_mark_resources
[ 2037.388920] nlm_gc_hosts skipping romita (cnt 0 use 0 exp 455264)
[ 2037.388922] nlm_gc_hosts skipping ditko (cnt 0 use 0 exp 460016)
[ 2037.388924] lockd: get host romita

So it finds a couple of entries (skips 'em) and then breaks out to carry
on immediately with "get host". I'm assuming that GC is invoked as part
of lookup handling, and doesn't just get triggered asynchronously.

Anyhow, this looks like a good spot to start digging. I don't see
anything running on top (does lockd show on top?) But the process still
seems to be in the ps table. It just doesn't do anything any more.

[Bug 110384] Re: With desktop effects on scrolling is slow and laggy in firefox & other browsers

2008-01-19 Thread Alex
I'm thinking it could be the open source ATI graphics driver that is
being used, xserver-xorg-video-ati and its compatibility with Compiz.
Maybe I should load Hardy and see if the fglrx driver in the
repositories improves anything. Tried using Envy and it totally borked
my system. Since upgrading to Gutsy in October, the scrolling on my
nVidia desktop has been great :)

[Bug 180829] Re: network storage - cannot access audio/video files only

2008-01-19 Thread NexusDave
** Description changed:

Using Gutsy, smb, a network hard disk (Maxtor Shared Storage Plus
  500Gb).

I have every kind of files on the network share, and on another machine
running Windows XP. I can see and use every files on both, except for
audio/video files on the network share only. So, I can read a .pdf file on the
network share and on the xp share, but not a .mpg or .mp3 on the network share.
If I use my Windows computer to copy a .mp3 file from the share to the XP
computer, then , I can read it from Linux.
The bug is that I can list (ls) those files correctly, but can't do anything
with them (read, write, modify, rename, copy) , not because of an error or unset
permissions, but because it just HANGS. For example, if I have multiple kinds
of files in the same directory, and want to copy a .pdf file using Ubuntu, no
problem, but a .mp3 or .mpg file would hang at the file copy dialog without
even starting the file copy and hang there indefinitely (same for renaming the
file or just accessing it's properties). I have to click 'cancel' or sometimes
hard close the window because it doesn't respond anymore.

The strangest thing is that I CAN use my Windows computer to JUST rename the
file extension from .mp3 to anything else (ex: .ttt) and then it works right
away in Ubuntu!!!. I can then copy the file with Ubuntu and then rename it back
to .mp3.
This happens just with audio/video files of some kinds (mp3,mpg,avi,wav,wma).
Have not tried other audio/video formats.
But ALL other files are OK.

I could use this workaround to just copy files but I wanted to access them
directly from Ubuntu to play them remotely with Movie Player and Totem Player.
Those applications of course hang also if I use them to access those files
directly from the network share.

I have tried this on 2 other Maxtor network storages and it does the same.
Tried using the File Browser logged as a user, tried command-line as root,
and tried using access to shares with smb and cifs. all do the same.
Network shares permissions (and all other permissions for that matter) are
all RW for every users (not so normally , but did it for testing purposes).

  ## Ubuntu 7.1 Gutsy, updated. Maxtor storage firmware updated.
+
+
+ Done some other tests, with still the same results. See pictures attachments.
+
+ I have to add that when renaming the file extension back to '.avi' , it
+ "freezes" at the 'renaming progress window' for a while (a few seconds)
+ and then actually do the renaming. SEE 5-long.png , picture attachment.

[Bug 177713] Re: 2.6.24-2: Regression with idle cpu cycle handling

2008-01-19 Thread dhaval
Hi,

this is not a regression. The CFS has the group scheduling feature
enabled, which is utilized using the Fair User interface. What this
means is that the root has the ability to set the importance of every
user. Those tunables are accessible at /sys/kernel/uids//cpu_share.

You can also have udev scripts which can be written as per
http://lkml.org/lkml/2007/10/9/115 .

[By default, root has twice the share of the other user]
[Also this is a propotional bandwidth scheduler. That is if you have two users,

[Bug 163095] Re: "The folder contents could not be displayed"

2008-01-19 Thread US41
I too receive this error. I am able to reproduce it consistently taking
the following steps in nautilus.

1. Open music folder /home/username/music (Inside are 2000 mp3 files.)
2. Create a new folder /home/Desktop/New Music/
3. Copy 200 MB of mp3's from .../music to .../New Music
4. Play a file in /New Music
5. Play a file in /music
Repeat back and forth.
6. Refresh the folder contents

I am now locked out of all directories under /home via nautilus.

To escape this problem, I press ctrl-alt-backspace to restart the X.org
server.

Hopefully this bug will be prioritized and addressed with a patch soon.
It is months old.

[Bug 184503] Open Office spreadsheet: Cell border format not applied correctly

2008-01-19 Thread Travis McCourtie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: openoffice.org

Tried to apply an upper and lower border in a spreadsheet to signify a
sub-total. Event though the Upper/Lower line option was applied (tried
using both the menu option Format > Cells > Borders Tab, and the tool-
bar button), there would only be a line the top border of the cell - and
this was black, regardless of the colour I chose.

NB: Also getting the lack of window controls & spreadsheet window
covering the Ubuntu menu bar, as per #162835 - have to close the
spreadsheet & exit OpenOffice to get back to the Desktop - no "minimise"

[Bug 184502] Nautilus exhibits odd behavior when installing language support

2008-01-19 Thread Jim Hutchinson
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nautilus

I recently had a problem with Nautilus not recognizing my keyboard. When
I would create a new folder I was not able to rename it as it refused to
respond to keyboard input. They keyboard worked fine in all other cases.
As I had recently installed Japanese Language Support (system - admin -
language support) I thought there might be a connection so I uninstalled
it (as well as unchecking "Enable support to enter complex characters)
and after rebooting the problem was gone. I did not make many changes to
the SCIM settings so it's possible there is an option that clears up the
conflict. However, there does seem to be a conflict of some sort.

I submitted this as a question first. You can read the details

[Bug 53897] Re: Disappearing panels Xubuntu dapper

2008-01-19 Thread Stefan Wagner
I can confirm this bug for 6.06 too: xfce4-panel disappears, and sometimes
looses some icons, or the xfce-menu entry.
It doesn't seem to depend on an user-interaction. Sometimes I go to sleep and
the panel vanished overnight without any interaction.

It started in summer 2007, and is appearing more often since then.

I use mostly the fglrx-driver for my graphics card, and I'm unsure
whether it happens with the radeon driver too.

[Bug 95559] Re: [apport] vbetool crashed with SIGILL

2008-01-19 Thread Aaron Waite
Lots of bug reports with this same title and symptoms, so hopefully I'm
in the right place.

The error/bug report tool informs me that vbetool crashes whenever I
wake from suspend. Sometimes I'm not able to wake at all and need to do
a hard reset. That seems to be more frequent though when I actually tell
it to sleep compared to just closing the lid of my laptop. This is a
Toshiba Portege S100 - one of the Canonical-supplied laptops for the
laptop testing team (more hardware info on that wiki page if it's
needed). Let me know if you need any other logs or other information.

This was submitted via the GUI bug reporting tool, so I assume the data
from that report made it's way in here somewhere.

[Bug 184410] Re: hal fails to initialize in hardy alpha 3 after upgrade

2008-01-19 Thread Stanley Sokolow
I have the same problem on Hardy 8.04 Alpha-3. Alpha-3 has been
working until now. The Alpha-3 system has been broken by some new
update, as described above. I get the same error message about
"internal error" saying "Failed to initialize HAL!" The logout button
is not working and network icon indicates error (!). I can do ctrl-
alt-backspace to kill x-server, which returns to login screen, from
which I can shutdown. This is on a desktop i386 (Celeron) system, so
it's not limited to notebook computers. (Dov-El's Dell Inspiron 1501 is
a notebook.) Returning the system to Gutsy 7.10 by swapping out the
primary hard drive, I can boot 7.10 and it runs fine.

[Bug 102495] Re: 'Always perform this action': Ignore for photo card option doesn't work.

2008-01-19 Thread KipBond
"Ignore probably just cancels the whole action. I agree that the correct
behavior would be to remember that choice. Perhaps a separate Cancel
button should be provided for 'Do nothing this once'."

Your options are: 1) Ignore or 2) Import Photos -- the dialog box is:
"Photo Import: A photo card has been detected. There are photos on the
card. Would you like to add these pictures to your album?" See
attached screenshot.

"Ignore" would seem to do what you are suggesting a separate "Cancel"
button would do: just not do anything. the "Import Photos" button
would copy the photos from the SD card to the local drive.

The thing that is NOT working here, is the optional check-box that says:
"Always perform this action". It is defaulted to not checked -- meaning
every time a card is inserted, you will get this dialog box to select
whether you want to import photos, or ignore it (this time). If you
check the "Always perform this action" box, the system should either
always 1) Ignore or always 2) Import Photos depending on which button
you subsequently click.

This may be a separate bug but, the jppy jpilot plugin is also broken.

I installed python2.4, but still get

Package is jppy-jpilot-plugins. To reproduce, launch jpilot and select jppy

[Bug 184506] network-admin authentication fails to properly elevate privileges

2008-01-19 Thread mmnz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

Hi,

Currently network-admin (System > Administration > Network) configuration
changes do not take effect despite 'unlocking' the applet (being authenticated
as a superuser).
When launched from the terminal network-admin does not display any error
messages.

The applet unlocks and you can make changes, however when you go to 'OK'
the changes a prompt tells you that "The configuration could not be

[Bug 184508] Gnome Window Selector loses windows

2008-01-19 Thread Robert Lange
Public bug reported:

The package that this is reported against contains the Gnome Window
Selector applet. I do not know what package that is. It would be very
helpful if someone in the know set the bug to point to the correct
package.

-

To reproduce:

1) Open a bunch of windows of different applications in Gnome.
2) Click the Window Selector to open the menu. You should see all of your
windows listed in the menu.
3) Without clicking other windows, click the Window Selector again to close the
menu.
4) Without clicking other windows, click the Window Selector again to open the
menu. With some probability p where 0 < p < 1, one or more of your windows will
be missing from the list.

Once missing, this window(s) will continue to be missing from the list
until you change focus to another window. Then, the next time you click
the Window Selector once, you should see all windows listed again.
(Effectively, you are back to step 2.)

I have noticed this bug only in the last week, so I don't know if a
recent update triggered it, or if it has been around for a while and I
merely did not notice it before now.

This bug is kind of a phantom, as sometimes I cannot trigger it and
sometimes it happens repeatedly. I have not found a sequence of actions
that guarantees repeatability, but if I use the desktop for a while, the
bug does occur relatively frequently.

I should stress that the windows themselves do not disappear, only the
listings of the windows in the Window Selector list.

There is a workaround. Changing window focus a few times seems to put
missing windows back on the list. On at least one instance, all of the
windows disappeared from the list and I needed to open new windows to
bring the existing windows back on the list.

This bug is quite annoying because I do not use the Window List applet
and the Window Selector is my primary method for switching windows.

[Bug 172420] Re: can't create database tables

2008-01-19 Thread waynorthny
Had the same problem on a fully updated system; went around with it for
hours.

Watched the logs with tail -f, no error messages. PHP5/apache2/mysql
connections were all working. No firewall in the way, doublechecked
permissions on directories. Even purged everything involved with Apache,
php5, and moodle, including dependencies, several times (kept mysql
though, as the previous testing suggested the problem was not with
that). Continued to get a blank page at http://localhost/moodle/admin as
well as .../admin/index.php (with a 200 http code), while if I put up a
simple html index page at .../admin/index.html, it *would* show (after I
adjusted the conf files so that html was a recognized index file
extension).

So no luck ... until I:

1) purged everything (including dependencies) connected to apache2, php5, and
moodle;
2) used Adept Manager instead of aptitude; and
3) Used mysql passwords containing only alphanumeric characters (no
punctuation-type stuff).

Bam. Success on first try. Running great now.

Hmm, it seems like the only thing being marked as 'invalid' is the
'boinc' assignment; the 'linux' assignment seems to have mysteriously
been replaced by the confusing statement: "This bug is not recorded as
needing to be fixed in linux (Ubuntu). "

I sure hope it is being left as valid for 'linux'; the behavior feels
like a regression subjectively, even if there is a good reason behind
it.

I seem to be missing something. I am not sure how scheduling makes a
difference to your test case, unless you are doing something alongside
it. If your script is sleeping for 10seconds, how much time do you
expect time to return?

[Bug 182358] Re: Compiz crashes my laptop (Intel T7200) Nvidia 7400

2008-01-19 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 145112 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/145112

Your options are:
1) disable one of your two CPU cores (by passing maxcpus=1 to the kernel, for
example. You can do this by editing your /boot/grub/menu.list file)
2) disable compiz.

Obviously I'd recommend disabling compiz if the lockups are too
annoying.

Secondly, bugs are not the right place to ask questions - bugs are to
inform the developers that something's wrong, and help them to find and
fix it. Questions are more likely to be answered by using one of the
support channels: «answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu» or «ubuntuforums.org».
