[Bug 109434] Re: Installing a server for a game automatically auto-inits and runs every boot.

2008-02-16 Thread Emilio Pozuelo Monfort
We can't just disable the server. The only thing I see that could work
is a debconf question which defaults to enabling it, but let's you tell
it not to enable the server.

I would like to see what the Debian maintainers think before making this
change.

[Bug 183110] Re: Epson USB printer backend fails

2008-02-16 Thread Chris Kälin
Confirmed (Epson Stylus Color 600 on my dad's Gutsy Machine)

operation="inode_permission" requested_mask="a" denied_mask="a"
name="/dev/tty" pid=5149 profile="/usr/sbin/cupsd"

The first time I plugged the usbcable, I could select the first option
(local printer) in KDE's printer-configuration tool. Did not work
anyway. Interstinlgy after reboot and many replugs, I was never again
able to select the first box in that tool. But eventhogh it's possible
to set the printer up with correct drivers (chose the last box there).

In any case, I was never able to print (see errors above).
It worked flawlessly in Feisty. Such things make me change more an more to
Fedora (as even with SELinux-related stuff, you're still able to fix it using
the sealert-helper).

[Bug 192483] [NEW] updatedb running when running ubuntu from the live cd

2008-02-16 Thread donpaolo
Public bug reported:

I was running ubuntu on a laptop from the 7:10 live cd, when the sistem
got completely freezed.

Unique signal of life: the cd running very actively.

The mouse wasn't freezed, sometimes I could move its cursor. But a
gnome-terminal I had opened was freezed, and so all the other
application I was running. Only the cd continued live, and I could hear
that the sistem was reading a lot from it.

I hadn't any other application that could be responsible of using the
cd.

Since I hadn't installed the ssh-server, I couldn't log from another pc.
Anyway, I suspect the ssh server could not have the time slice to answer
the request.

The only explanation I see is that a cron job has run updatedb, and it
has begun to read all the filesystem without realizing the system files
in the live cd weren't worth controlling.

[Bug 184448] Re: ksmserver doesnt start after change hostname in /etc/hostname (kubuntu710)

2008-02-16 Thread DanielBachran
Hi everybody,

I guess I have the same issue here. Got a new machine w/ Ubuntu
preinstalled (from Dell :-) and obviously wanted to change the host
name. Did so directly in /etc/hostname (where else?).

After some more time (and several reboots), I installed the KDE4 packages
available from:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kubuntu-members-kde4/ubuntu gutsy main

I'm having Ubuntu 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon) obviously. Installation went fine.

When I try to login from GDM I always get the same error upon login:
- KDE4 splash screen starts
- Upon the fourth (or so) icon, I get a crash report behind the splash screen
- Clicking into the splash closes it
- The crash report informs me that ksmserver crashed
- Closing the crash report, logs me out again and brings me back to GDM

Any ideas? Help is greatly appreciated!

For your info:
I'm running on a Dell XPS M1330 w/ intel x3100 graphics card ("Intel
Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller"). Running the
"intel" driver.

My hostname was something like "dell-laptop" or so and I changed it to
"bartimäus" (note the umlaut).

ciao, daniel :-)

[Bug 192252] Re: Editing /etc/network/interfaces causes Gutsy 7.10 to crash

2008-02-16 Thread Peter Belew
This problem did not occur under Feisty on the same laptop.

Also, it does not occur on my desktop system, running 6.06 LTS (Dapper)
on a Dell PowerEdge 400SC, with two Ethernet NICs.

It appears to be new with Gutsy, from my limited testing.

[Bug 190615] Re: Sticking Keys

2008-02-16 Thread Ship
Hi I have the same issue in debian sid, when I run WoW under compiz,
sometimes the 'z' key sticks (azerty keyboard), and I must restart X to
solve the problem.

But the problem doesn't appear when I don't run compiz, so I think it's
raher a compiz bug than a xorg bug.

Are you guys running compiz too ?

[Bug 192487] [NEW] strange "copy" behaviour in gnome-nettool

2008-02-16 Thread donpaolo
Public bug reported:

In gnome-nettool, the edit->copy command and the ctl-c shortcut have a
strange behaviour: they copy to the clipboard the result of the network
test.

This produces inconsistecies, because if I select the network address in
the port scan tab, I expect that the copy command acts on the selection,
while it copies the result of the action. While ctl-x act actually on
the selection.

The thing is stranger if I consider that this ctl-c behaviour could have
a meaning in the case I have performed a test, but it has no meaning
when no test has been performed. At least in this case ctl-c should
actually copy the selection to the clipboard.

Anyway I consider this behaviour is confusing.

In order to copy the test result to the clipboard a separate command
should be offered.

[Bug 192486] [NEW] MythTV 0.21 Suite FFe

2008-02-16 Thread Mario Limonciello
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: mythtv

This FFe is not directly for a single upload, but rather for the "plan"
throughout the rest of the Hardy cycle. MythTV will be releasing their
0.21 release within the next 1-1.5 months. With recent discussions with
them, they have entered feature freeze and branched off trunk to it's
own 0.21 branch to complete bug fixing.

You can see their road map posted here:
http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/roadmap. At the time of posting, there are
51 pending open bugs for 0.21 (which was closer to 120 just two weeks
ago). In preparation on our end, we switched to trunk checkouts over
the last month and have been bringing all bugs we could upstream to be
fixed.

Barring any unforseen consequences, upstream would like to see 0.21 in
Hardy, and is going to try to meet that schedule.

On our end, all of the packages that are listed in this bug need to be
upgraded for the 0.21 release. They all have get-orig-source rules for
building off a new checkout, so this isn't a very difficult or time
consuming process.

Throughout the rest of the Hardy development cycle, the plan is to
regularly (weekly or so) update these builds to the latest snapshot so
that users are able to file bugs against fresh snapshots. If upstream
hasn't completed and released 0.21 by the end of March, we will have a
discussion with them to see where they are at on it. Beyond the end of
March, no more snapshot uploads will be uploaded. If they complete 0.21
in time for when universe closes, that will be the uploaded as the last
upload. If not, then the last upload will be the end of March snapshot,
and then updated via hardy-updates after Hardy is released.

The risk for affecting anything else in universe is minimal. Nothing
else depends, or build depends on any of the mythtv suite other than
itself. If for some reason the last snapshot that gets uploaded is
unstable, the rules in debian/rules can easily be used to grab an older
one and add an epoch.

Re: [Bug 129910] Re: Blank ttys when using vesafb (vga=xxx)

2008-02-16 Thread Loye Young
IF YOU HAVE SOMETHING THAT WILL HELP THE DEVELOPERS FIX THE BUG, THIS
IS THE APPROPRIATE VENUE.

IF YOU NEED HELP TROUBLESHOOTING YOUR PARTICULAR SITUATION, GO TO THE
FORUMS.

That said, Fabio's situation is likely instructive for others, so I'll
write up a general how-to here even though this thread should be about
the bug and not about troubleshooting.

Fabio has four video drivers loaded:
-- vesafb
-- vga16fb
-- fbcon
-- nvidia

The correct number is at most THREE. You should not use vga16fb and
vesafb at the same time. In Fabio's case, vesafb will probably be the
best choice.
1. Go back to /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-framebuffer and remove the
"#" before the vga16fb line.
2. Remove "vga16fb" from /etc/initramfs-tools/modules.
3. Add "vesafb" and "fbcon" to /etc/modules.

The framebuffer mode is probably incorrect on your boot kernel command
in /boot/grub/menu.lst.
4. Remove "splash vga=791" everywhere it appears in /boot/grub/menu.lst.
5. Run "depmod".
6. Run "update-initramfs -u"
7. Reboot.

You should now have your consoles back, but in 640x480 mode.
(Sometimes, the graphics card figures out the right thing to do and
"just works". If it does, don't fix what ain't broke.)

Now you want to figure out which framebuffers are best for your
card/monitor combination. Run the rest of the commands below from a
console, NOT a terminal in X. The following two commands will give you
a great deal of information:
8. Run "get-edid | parse-edid" to get the possible modes for your monitor.
9. Run "hwinfo --vbe | less" and find the stanzas for the framebuffer
and monitor. (For me, they are at the end of the file, so I just press
the END key.)

ALTERNATIVE 1 --
hwinfo should give you the list of framebuffer modes to put in your
boot kernel command and the native resolution of your monitor. Note
that not all monitors do such a good job of reporting, so you might
have to pull out the documentation and read it to find the best
resolution. Usually, a digital LCD should run at 60 Htz (long story
that's not worth telling now). Pick the best framebuffer mode for your
monitor. If you have a digital LCD, use a resolution that equals the
native resolution of your monitor.
10. Edit /boot/grub/menu.lst and insert your chosen vga mode.
(You may have to do some trial and error to figure out which is best.)
11. Reboot and see how it comes out.

ALTERNATIVE 2 --
"get-edid | parse-edid" should give you the possible modes for your
monitor, if your monitor has a decent implementation of EDID. (My LG
19" Flatron does not work with this, but my Acer 19" widescreen does.
YMMV)
10. Run "less /etc/fb.modes". Study it and find which stanzas match
your monitor as reported by the EDID command.
11. From the console, run "fbset [EMAIL PROTECTED]",
substituting the correct arguments that match fb.modes. Trial and
error may be necessary. If your console blanks out and you can't see
anything, use Alt-Right or Alt-Left (i.e., the Alt key and the
appropriate arrow key pressed simultaneously) to go to another console
and try again.

If you almost always use the console, Alternative 1 is probably more
convenient. If you only occasionally use the console, Alternative 2 is
probably for you. Of course, if one works and the other doesn't, use
the one that works.

Further troubleshooting help requests should be directed to the Ubuntu
community help forums, one of the Ubuntu community IRC help channels,
or to one of the growing number of companies who provide paid (and
usually very reasonably priced) support for Ubuntu. Feel free to
plagarize this posting, but remember, you didn't pay for this advice,
so if following these instructions turns out badly for you or your
machine, it's TFB.

Happy Trails,

I've published a test version of the python-clamd package for Dapper in
the ubuntu-clamav PPA. I'd appreciate it if you would give it a test
and see if it works for you. You can either download the .deb and
install it using dpkg -i from:

http://launchpadlibrarian.net/12039715/python-
pyclamd_0.1.1-0ubuntu1%7Edapper1%7Eppa1_all.deb

or add deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-clamav/ubuntu dapper main to
your /etc/apt/sources.list, update and install python-clamd. Once I've
got comfirmation this works, I'll upload it to dapper-backports.

[Bug 189898] Re: selection/paste does not work in current document

2008-02-16 Thread Nicolò Chieffo
I didn't explain the problem well: I don't want to copy the selected text in
the ctrl-v clipboard.
I want to copy it in the middle button buffer!

This is done in gnome-terminal, so it can be also done in gedit. In
gnome terminal, when you select some text, and then click elsewhere the
buffer is still full with the text you selected! In gedit, if you click
(but not select!) other things the buffer is cleared

[Bug 73415] Re: Sound only mono until mute/unmute master volume

2008-02-16 Thread Josh Burdick
This was the most similar bug report I could find. On a Thinkpad X31, I
get sound from both speakers when I'm connected to the dock. The laptop
itself only has one speaker, so when I'm not connected to the dock, I
get mono sound.

Also, when I plug in an Edirol UA-1EX external USB sound A/D-D/A, I only
get sound from the right headphone. (Using a previous release, I think
Edgy, I was getting stereo sound from the Edirol gadget, and from the
laptop headphone jack. Admittedly that was a different laptop, which
makes it hard to compare. But I'd expect the USB thing to work.)

If it's a bug using the headphone jack and the USB gadget, I think it's
less likely to be a driver problem.

[Bug 192486] Re: MythTV 0.21 Suite FFe

2008-02-16 Thread Scott Kitterman
Looking that over, I find a number of changes that don't look like
bugfixes in the 0.21 plan:

http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/2693
http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/2923
http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/4222
http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/4361
http://svn.mythtv.org/trac/ticket/3722

So I think it's not entirely fair to say there are just bugfixes in the
plan. When do they expect to be feature complete?

As KQEMU is GPLed now, there should be no problem to get it into linux-
ubuntu-modules-*-generic or something in my opinion.

I think it does. For example, the "nvidia" module exists pre-compiled in
linux-restricted-modules-generic and can be compiled from source from
nvidia-kernel-source/nvidia-legacy-kernel-source/nvidia-new-kernel-
source.

[Bug 25966] Re: NEW PACKAGE: Printer drivers for Brother needed

2008-02-16 Thread ubuntu4fun
OK, guys, let me be the first to test the new packages :-)

As I've written above, I made my Brother HL2030 work perfectly using
cupswrapperHL2030-2.0.1-2.i386.deb from the Brother website.

I started testing Your packages with completely removing
cupswrapperHL2030-2.0.1-2.i386.deb.
Then I downloaded 3 packages from: http://upload.leservicetechnique.com/brother/
First I downloaded:
1) brother-cups-wrapper-laser_2.0.1-2-0ubuntu1_i386.deb;
then:
2) brother-lpr-drivers-laser_2.0.1-1-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
and
3) brother-lpr-drivers-common_1.0.0-1-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
following the dependencies.

When I was trying to install
brother-lpr-drivers-common_1.0.0-1-0ubuntu1_i386.deb
the error occurred: DEPENDENCY IS NOT SATISFIABLE: libc6 !!!

What am I supposed to do next?
How can I help You?

Looks like an external program to me which would go into the contrib/

though, and the description is somewhat lacking.

This one is 6 months old. Not sure if it'll go into 0.21 or not.

This one is already implemented and just missing a few fixes.

I'm not sure why this is not closed. Anyways, these are just
supplemental scripts which download metadata. It's nice to have them but
not too critical if they're broken.

MythWeather was recently redesigned to be more flexible wrt data
sources. While it's basically working, I'd consider the UI unusable. So
yes, there needs to be work done.

True. Some "features" will improve usability (eg in the case of
mythweather: any change that'll prevent the user from gnawing their leg
off due to frustration is an improvement) or are simply small enough
that they don't matter, eg supplemental scripts or stuff which goes to
contrib/.

[Bug 187842] Re: When I minimize a program it just disappears

2008-02-16 Thread Tony
I don't think the originator of this question was "stupid" at all and
the use of such derogatory language is unprofessional. Just because Mr
Trefny hasn't experienced this problem does NOT mean that it is non-
existent.

I have FREQUENTLY found that applications which launch automatically
upon login and minimise into the system tray will sometimes be missing
from the tray when the user logs on.

The applications which I have found doing this so far are easycrypt,
amsn and skype They are all running but their GUI cannot be accessed as
the icons just aren't there. Repeated shutdowns don't fix the problem.
The icons MIGHT come back one day but there is never a guarantee. This
problem has occurred on my machine a number of times over the past few
months and it is quite disruptive.

This may be an issue with the applications themselves, but when three
applications disappear from the systray simultaneously I'd be thinking
that Gnome is where the problem arises. I run Ubuntu 7.10 with Gnome
2.20.1 on an AMD64 and this is the only erratic behaviour I experience
on the system

I don't have a "fix" for the problem yet, but it is REAL not imaginary.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make

Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at
http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ . Thanks again and we appreciate your

[Bug 190888] Re: /etc/init.d/mzscheme does not start web-server

2008-02-16 Thread Joel Borggrén-Franck
Okey, I gave it a try, and I got a working package.

BUT there is another problem regarding the web-server, since it depends
on MrEd which is included in the drscheme package. So the debdiff also
includes a move of the mred collects to the mzscheme deb which might
(quite possibly) be the wrong way to do it (and I might also have done
the move the wrong way ;). Maybe the whole web-server part should be
moved to the drscheme deb since it depends somewhat on graphical
elements?

Anyway working diff included.

[Bug 189501] Re: KWin compositing not working in 4.0.1

2008-02-16 Thread Martin Gräßlin
I don't know why and how but effects are working again...
I just reinstalled kwin-kde4 and now the effects are working. But I tried this
before and than it did not work :-(
Very strange... But I also removed kwinrc from .kde4/share/config directory. I
have no idea. But I'm glad that it is working again :-D

We haven't had any more reports on this issue and the latest version for
Ubuntu 7.10 is 7.10.4 (not 7.04.4) - I'll assume whatever problem you
had was fixed in a later version of the package. Please reopen the bug
