[Bug 285823] [NEW] Option not to auto-run wubi

2008-10-19 Thread David Prieto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: usb-creator

I have a usb drive that I always carry with me, and I want to give it
two uses:

-to use it as a live disk.
-to carry personal data.

But when I want to open some of my personal files from someone else's
computer and put it my usb, wubi always tries to auto-run. This may be
suspicious or even alarming to some people, having some program autorun
when they just wanted to open a pdf file. Would it be possible to add a
checkbox with the text open the installer when inserting the disk into
a running windows computer, so unchecking it would still let me
manually run wubi AND boot the system from the disk, but NOT run wubi
automatically?

[Bug 285807] [NEW] ktorrent uses high cpu and all of memory

2008-10-19 Thread Tim Skinner
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ktorrent

Version 3.1.2 using ubuntu 8.10 beta

ktorrent on startup uses about 60% cpu, which seems very high compared
to the usage of the kde3 version on hardy. But the real problem is, left
for long enough, ktorrent consumes 100% of memory which effectively
causes the system to crash. Leaving ktorrent open for a couple hours
seems to be a reasonable period of usage, but I have to restart ktorrent
after an hour or so, to stop my system crashing.

2008-10-19 Thread Alexia Death
@Trond Thorbjørnsen - I was just about to recommend checking your X
conf, because now, that kernel packages are patched, theres no reason
for the static conf to not work.

@Jose Hevia - the odd behaviour was caused by a missmatch between
kernel and X driver versions. It is now corrected. All you need to do to
get your stylus working is to copy that fdi file as listed in my first
post or to get full function but no hotplug set up your X conf as it was
in hardy.

[Bug 285815] Re: Backlight keeps getting darker on MacBookPro

2008-10-19 Thread rydberg
This is a continuation of the problem adressed with upstream commit
95bd4f1bf9a62f1551461841d64f6f1cdea6a92e, to this problem:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/hal/+bug/226894

It is correct that MacBookPro3,1 and later are not listed to use the
macbookpro addon. However, the light_sensor and keyboard_backlight
devices are also driven by the same addon, and thus the newer macbooks
should not be listed there either.

Assuming that the gnome-power-manager still treats the listed but
missing light sensor, the symptom described in this bug makes sense.

The suggested fix is to remove MacBookPro3,1;MacBookPro3,2;MacBookPro4,1
completely from fdi/policy/10osvendor/10-macbookpro-utils.fdi, and
instead implement keyboard_backlight and light_sensor through the
mechanism outlined in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-
source-2.6.22/+bug/125918.

[Bug 272837] Re: Intrepid: in kile the Konsole tab does not work

2008-10-19 Thread Harald Sitter
It won't be shipped at any point. Konsole depends on too much from the
KDE stack (in this case the KDE 3 stack) which makes deployment kind of
difficult. For that matter, the only applications that are affected by
the absence of it are KDevelop and Kile. We hope to have both ported to
KDE 4 in time for Kubuntu 9.04, which will be a supported upgrade target
from 8.04 (actually auto-updates from 8.04 to 8.10 are deactivated
because of this kind of shortcomings).

Anywho, please be assured that we will include the KDE 4 version of Kile
in the Kubuntu KDE 4 PPA, or maybe even the Intrepid backports
repository, once it is ready for day-to-day use.

I'm sorry but unfortunately, I really don't know libaqbanking wizards
and configuration so I wouldn't know where to start, so you might get
more support on answers.launchpad.net and/or ubuntuforums (or even IRC
ubuntu / gnucash channel). If after some research you believe that you
hit a bug, don't hesitate to open a new bug for the appropriate package.
The only tips that I can give you is to backup all files in your home
directory and to play with hidden folders that looks like the right
 ones.

Thanks for your contribution to ubuntu and gnucash!

[Bug 285826] [NEW] DVB-T USB stick detected in cold state

2008-10-19 Thread LostinSpacetime
Public bug reported:

Hello. I'm on a up to date Intrepid here. I have a problem with a dvb-
usb stick (MSI MSI Digivox mini II (V3.0) [Afatech DVB-T 2]). After
compiling and installing the drivers and putting the firmware at the
richt place, there is a problem when connecting. I found out that I have
to try several times (about 20 - no fun), until the stick is
initialized. The difference in dmesg is:

NO SOCCESS:
[ 193.512589] dvb-usb: found a 'Afatech AF9015 DVB-T USB2.0 stick' in cold
state, will try to load a firmware
[ 193.512601] firmware: requesting dvb-usb-af9015.fw
[ 193.516586] dvb-usb: downloading firmware from file 'dvb-usb-af9015.fw'

SUCCESS:
[ 230.448101] dvb-usb: found a 'Afatech AF9015 DVB-T USB2.0 stick' in warm
state.
[ 230.448450] dvb-usb: will pass the complete MPEG2 transport stream to the
software demuxer.
[ 230.448730] DVB: registering new adapter (Afatech AF9015 DVB-T USB2.0 stick)
[ 230.927625] af9013: firmware version:4.95.0
[ 230.932752] DVB: registering frontend 0 (Afatech AF9013 DVB-T)...
[ 230.986882] tda18271 5-00c0: creating new instance
[ 230.994757] TDA18271HD/C1 detected @ 5-00c0
[ 231.261272] dvb-usb: Afatech AF9015 DVB-T USB2.0 stick successfully
initialized and connected.

It looks like the problem would be the state of the stick (cold/warm)..
whatever this means. As I found several bug reports, from this and other
sticks, with similar behavior, I thought it would be possible, that this
issue is not connected to a certain model, but more general. think some
developer should take a look at this and decide.

Greetings!

[Bug 285822] Re: test programs created incorrectly when cross compiling using MinGW

2008-10-19 Thread Erik de Castro Lopo
** Description changed:

-
- I have been cross compiling libogg from SVN for some time using the MinGW
cross compiler tools (mingw, mingw32-binutils and mingw32-runtime packages) and
running the test suite under Wine.
+ I have been cross compiling libogg from SVN for some time using the
+ MinGW cross compiler tools (mingw, mingw32-binutils and mingw32-runtime
+ packages) and running the test suite under Wine.

I have just upgraded from Hardy (where this worked perfectly) to
Intrepid. On Intrepid, the whole thing builds but the libtool generated
test binaries fail with error code 127.

After much investigation I found that the main difference between Hardy
and Intrepid was that Hardy uses libtool 1.5.26 and Intrepid uses
  libtool 2.2.4.

On a hunch I downloaded the libtool 2.2.6a sources and installed them.
After re-running the autogen.sh script with the new libtool everything
  worked as it should.

[Bug 284845] Re: Kernel panic (2.6.24-21-generic) just after dist-upgrade wifi atheros AR5007EG

2008-10-19 Thread Samuel
Hi Spike,

Thanks for your answer. I read the thread above. It looks like the one
in French I followed. However, I noticed that I didnt' install the very
last version of the madwifi driver. The procedure I followed pointed me
on a patched version of the driver: madwifi-
hal-0.10.5.6-r3835-20080801.tar.gz. It worked well with the previous
kernel version (2.6.24-19-generic), but not anymore with the new one
(2.6.24-21-generic). I do not have clear evidence of the cause; it's
just a feeling.

Your comment gave me a hint:

1) uninstall my current madwifi dirver
(madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-r3835-20080801.tar.gz).
2) install the last one (dated on September 3rd:
madwifi-hal-0.10.5.6-current.tar.gz).
3) test the new driver with both kernel versions.

As this issue is quite sensitive for the stability of my laptop, I need
to make a backup before the tests above. I will keep you informed.

Thanks,

Cheers,

Samuel

[Bug 273318] Re: Hang during boot: intrepid 2.6.27-3 hp pavilion

2008-10-19 Thread gpk
Problem still exists in Beta version with 2.6.27-7 kernel.

Actually, it does not seem to be 254688. (Or, so Stefan Bader concluded.)
The problem there doesn't respond to noapictimer, while my problem does.
See this:

vnieto wrote on 2008-09-10: (permalink)
Also I put on this boot line on grub menu.lst:
 kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27-2-generic
 root=UUID=88917a1d-a2f6-4e3f-8742-d770e2b58ce4 ro splash locale=es_ES
 noapictimer
and work fine, I don't see any bad thing.
 ...
 I use amd64 x2 and 2.6.27-2-generic
Stefan Bader wrote on 2008-09-10: (permalink)

@vnieto,

noapictimer prevents the kernel from using the local apic timer. However this
option is only used for 64bit kernels and only takes effect with multiple
CPU (cores). So it is not a solution for the 32bit kernel also handled here.

You can try the smb5 test kernel from
http://people.ubuntu.com/~smb/bug254668/ which should allow you to boot
 without the noapictimer option.

[Bug 285832] [NEW] There are two Shut Down buttons [intrepid]

2008-10-19 Thread Nanley Chery
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: human-icon-theme

Problem:
There are two Power buttons in Intrepid's System menu. One is gray, the other
red - which looks like it should be more of a shutdown button rather than a
logout button. (And this is what everyone is already used to.)

Suggested fix:
Replace the current red button with gnome-session-logout.png . This would make
it less confusing for new and current users. Regarding FUSA, it's icon can be
replaced with the gray shutdown button.

[Bug 273708] Re: xorg hangs on startup (intel G45, compiz turned off)

2008-10-19 Thread mnemo
desertoak, I just attached an URL to the upstream bug report I filed in
the beginning of october. Since then Keith Packard have written a patch
for this bug and Eric Anholt improved and merged that patch. The bug was
in intel-agp.ko (a component inside the Linux kernel) and Eric's tree
has been pulled into Daniel Airlie's DRM tree which is turn has been
pulled by Linus Torvalds so it's very likely that this fix will be in
the 2.6.28 kernel.

That said, this still means that G45-based motherboards might not boot
on intrepid final unless someone from the ubuntu kernel team decides to
cherry pick this particular patch (see below). I'm not sure that's going
to happen though because we're beyond the kernel freeze in the
intrepid schedule (at least I've e-mailed them about it).

I suspect that the only change you need to make G45 work nicely is this one:
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/anholt/drm-intel.git;a=blobdiff;f=drivers/char/agp/intel-agp.c;h=f1fe7490131468b40c5817e232442026d9f8ff0d;hp=016fdf0623a4ce7b5f849efc8ab099a2c5026497;hb=2052746fc8397130c120f0194a89938b0b62b6cb;hpb=b34c87315b1a2822111fc8ef744ef504f9be2f85
Applying this change is indeed sufficient to fix my machine.

[Bug 279065] Re: The live CD installer should detect the presence of OpenSolaris

2008-10-19 Thread Colin Watson
Sorry for the multiple negatives. Actually I'm saying the exact
opposite: I'm saying that I would expect a Unix-like OS to keep the
hardware clock in UTC when no other operating systems are involved. At
the risk of belabouring the point, Unix-like operating systems simply
work better with the hardware clock in UTC; system administrators tend
to find this out every six months when daylight savings time switches on
or off, especially if some of their systems happen to go down during the
relevant window. (Of course the use of NTP works around some of these
issues.)

It seems like OpenSolaris has made a serious mistake, but thanks for the
information. I've unfortunately left it a bit late to change this for
Ubuntu 8.10 now, but we can do it for 9.04.

[Bug 273318] Re: Hang during boot: intrepid 2.6.27-3 hp pavilion

2008-10-19 Thread gpk
You can try the smb5 test kernel from
http://people.ubuntu.com/~smb/bug254668/ which should allow you to boot
 without the noapictimer option.

No luck. I download it, then
sudo dpkg -i linux-image-2.6.27-3-generic_2.6.27-3.3smb5_amd64.deb
then boot with the 2.6.27-3 kernel found in grub's menu, and I still need to
keep
hitting keys.

[Bug 285737] Re: synaptic package manager crashes in ubuntu 8.10 beta

2008-10-19 Thread Koen Beek
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important
for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn
more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a
bug in synaptic.
For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of applications
have bug reporting functionality built in to them. This can be accessed via the
Report a Problem option in the Help menu for the application with which you are
having an issue. You can learn more about this feature at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Bug 254668] Re: [2.6.27] pausing during boot (several issues)

2008-10-19 Thread gpk
It's been suggest that
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-meta/+bug/273318
is the same as this bug. My reading is no, though they are related.

273318 happens on a dual-core AMD64 laptop, it involves 13 separate hangs on
boot,
12 of which respond to hitting any key, and one of which doesn't but times out
after a minute or two.
273318 boots much better with noapictimer -- then you only get the single
hang that times out.
273318 is still a problem in the Intrepid Beta 2.6.27-7 kernel of today.

Can people over here comment?
