[Bug 507264] Re: Choppy/Freezing H.264 Encoded Video Playback

2010-01-16 Thread Michał Borsuk
I have the same problem. I've also tracked it down to x264. There's no
relation to mkv as it is only a container, same problem occurs with mp4
files.

GStreamer-baser playback: frames freeze, sometimes playback stops
mplayer: same as above (!)
VLC - not tested
Avidemux - ok, no problems

Architecture: x86
Kernel: 2.6.31-17-generic
Video driver: nVidia v 185

[Bug 506702] Re: needs to block non-executable files from executing

2010-01-16 Thread Johan Kiviniemi
Malicious software in Windows has been known to try getting past simple
file type checks by spreading a zip file containing the actual
executable.

In our case, a user could get a tarball containing an executable with
the +x bit set from a malicious user.

Perhaps make file-roller ask the user before unpacking archives that
have the executable bit set.

[Bug 508365] [NEW] Leaves mouse icon in busy state

2010-01-16 Thread Ken Pratt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: sound-juicer

Insert a CD to be ripped. Sound Juicer will calculate its ID then fill
in the tracks. During this time the mouse icon is set to the busy icon.
Once the tracks are received, the icon stays busy with no apparent
reason. It can be used in this state to start the rip. Is there a
music brainz lookup or something else going on? If so, you may want
make it known to the user?

[Bug 508222] Re: Cannot install the package kvm under Ubuntu 8.04

2010-01-16 Thread John Edwards
The testdrive package is not available for Ubuntu 8.04:

$ sudo apt-get install testdrive
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package testdrive

It looks like you are installing the testdrive package from a third
party archive.

If that testdrive package was built for Ubuntu 8.04, then that testdrive
package has a bug and your should contact it's author. If it was not
built for Ubuntu 8.04 you should not use it.

Either way, KVM in Ubuntu 8.04 does not have a bug.

Your other problem with kvm-source is already covered by kvm-source
having a Suggest dependency of the linux-headers package.

[Bug 508369] [NEW] Thermal control broken after resume

2010-01-16 Thread Wouter de Groot
Public bug reported:

Since 2.6.30 thermal control does not function after resume: the fan
will not come on until the temperature reaches 80C, and when it does the
fan starts spinning at the highest level and never backs down. This is
tested using Ubuntu 9.10, 10.04 alpha 2 and upstream kernel versions.
Kernels 28 and 29 do work. I suspect the work on thermal in 2.6.30 may
have introduced this regression, but that's a layman's guess.

Steps:
1) Using a kernel version at or higher than .30, suspend the machine.
2) Resume.

Expected: thermal control determines how fast the fan should spin.
Observed: fan stays off until laptop gets very hot, then goes on to full blast.

This machine has an Insyde bios. The DMI info is incorrect (due to some
experimentation with BIOS flashing to see if that was a factor): the
machine is really a Toshiba Satellite L305D-S5881, PSLC8U-00D010.

[Bug 506455] Re: can't catch drag the document with the mouse

2010-01-16 Thread madbiologist
I can reproduce this on Karmic. I would also like to see this
implemented. Importance should probably be set to Wishlist. I'll
download Lucid alpha 2 tomorrow and test this on that.

Note that if this is implemented we will also need to implement a toggle
button/s or drop-down list to allow the user to set using the mouse for
selecting text and (1 button or 2 choices on the list)/or (2 buttons or
3 choices on the list) graphics. Last time I looked Adobe Reader had
something similar. I can't remember if this is possible in xpdf and if
so, how they implemented it - does anyone have it installed to check?

How to reproduce:
1. make sure MySQL and bacula are not installed on the system.
2. Install bacula. This will install bacula and mysql-server and -client as
dependency.
3. bacula is configured, including database access (failing silently).
4. MySQL is configured and started.

for step 2 database and table creation fails, since MySQL is not
configured and started at this time.

Solution:
MySQL has to be configured and successfully started before bacula is configured.

Workaround:
Install MySQL first, then install bacula.

maybe i was too optimistic.
after today's upgrades, desktop can't load anymore with 24 bits.
there was xorg update to 1.7.3.902-1ubuntu7 , but i reverted it to the original
1ubuntu6, and the system still doesn't work properly. something else broke it,
but i don't have the time to check them all.

[Bug 484717] Re: toolbar customization failure

2010-01-16 Thread Xavier Lepaul
I had the same problem, and I tried to disable all my extensions and re-
enable them one by one. The one causing the problem is Ubuntu Firefox
Modifications. Is is great for integration with apt, but it enforces
the layout of the UI... We should report it as a bug of the extension.
Meanwhile, disabling it works like a charm.

[Bug 496093] Re: [lucid] rt2860 frequently fails to connect to secured wireless networks

2010-01-16 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
Indeed. Confirmed with lucid alpha-2 iso loopback booted from hd. Could not
connect to the wireless router set to:
WPA-PSK Encryption: TKIP+AES
WPA-PSK Version: WPA+WPA2
three times out of three.

During my tests documented in comment #20 this router was set to WPA-PSK
Version: WPA.

The network manager's connection information tab says Security:
WPA/WPA2 in both modes, so one really has to look at the router to see
what it is set to in detail.

How to reproduce:
1. Make sure bacula is not installed on the system, make sure, MySQL is
installed and running.
2. apt-get install bacula. This will install bacula including dependencies.
apt will report an error with dpkg --configure bacula.
3. the meta-package bacula will remain uninstalled.
4. start aptitude
5. update, then select all upgradeable packaged (press u then U, then g)
6. aptitude will respond with a list of upgradeable packages and
one with packages which can be removed, because they
are not used any more by any other package. Taking this
for serious, bacula will be removed including all dependencies
installed by bacula. Furthermore: meta-package bacula is
selected for install over and over again. Failing to configure,
because it is already installed and configured.

The meta-pacakge bacula should install and remain installed.

[Bug 403955] Re: jockey crashed during installation of ubuntu, apparently no effect on the installation, which continued normally

2010-01-16 Thread Paolo Sammicheli
Martin,

I did what you asked:

ubu...@ubuntu:~$ sudo killall jockey-backend
ubu...@ubuntu:~$ sudo /usr/share/jockey/jockey-backend --debug -l
/tmp/jockey.log

And I Instantly got a jokey crash. Apport guided me to this bug, then i
pressed ctrl-c for stopping jokey-backend:

^CTraceback (most recent call last):
File /usr/share/jockey/jockey-backend, line 75, in module

main_loop.run()
KeyboardInterrupt

ubu...@ubuntu:~$ cat /tmp/jockey.log

what happens is that /tmp/jockey.log is empty. :(

This happens with Lucid Netbook Remix Alpha 2 on a Dell Inspiron 1520.
The first time I encounter it, it happened alone, without doing anything
apparently. (I was just browsing the web for testing network) If you
launch manually Jockey it works normally.

How can I help you more?

Hi Bruce,

Is the problem solved?

I had the same problem with version 9.04 and I think the the problem is the
driver. You need the newest driver for 8780 and 9.o4 does not has it,
I waited for 9.10 but unfortunately it is the same.
So I need to bring the newest driver version intoi the kernal.

I'm experiencing this same behaviour under Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 kernel
2.6.31-17-generic with a Prolink PixelView PlayTV MPEG2 PV-M4900 analog
card and a ATI Radeon 9600 for video output. I've tried all sorts of

Only MythTV LiveTV and LiveTV recording are affected. TVTime, VLC,

improperly initializing the video capture card.

There are all sorts of references out there on the web of people having
this very same issue, none of them seem to be conclusive about a
solution

[Bug 138194] Re: Closing lid during initial shutdown causes notebook to suspend

2010-01-16 Thread Vish
Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut
should be a small usability issue, in the default Ubuntu install, that
affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. So this bug can't be
addressed as part of this project.

- I'm unable to reproduce this issue too on either Karmic or Lucid .
For further information about papercuts criteria, please read
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut.

Don't worry though, this bug has been marked as Invalid only in the
papercuts project.

[Bug 75074] Re: eject cd doesn't work and just should

2010-01-16 Thread Ivo
My eject-CD-button (hardware-button on the desktop) doesn't work.

I have dual boot win7/ubuntu9.10.
My drives are all eSATA
BIOS is AMI v 02.67 (recent)

Eject-button works fine under windows7.

When I boot Ubuntu without a CD in the player I can't open the tray except by
using a pin (not very elegant).
When I succeed in inserting a disk in the CD/DVD-player it is mounted
automatically and then I can eject via software (e.g. sudo eject).

To work around this problem I always see to it that a disk is inserted
while booting (or I always leave a disk in the player on exit so it is
there when I boot). In this way I can always use the software eject to
open the tray.

This is probably a bug and I would be very grateful if somebody could
help me there.

[Bug 506967] Re: lookup fails assert - aborts startup

2010-01-16 Thread CSkau
I apologize ! I just face-palmed myself for this one.
I seem to have skimmed the man page too quickly as the correct command
naturally is:

$ lookup /var/lib/lookup/compdic /var/lib/lookup/edict
/var/lib/lookup/enamdict /var/lib/lookup/kanjidic

I do however hold that the above described behavior is buggy, as a program -
IMHO - should never simply die like so.
I propose some sort of check to see if the given file(s) are of correct format
and warn accordingly.

[Bug 502219] Re: Kernel errors triggered with SSD storage

2010-01-16 Thread Vishal Rao
Update from my side after installing Kubuntu Lucid Alpha 2:

It does not seem to be related to bug #445852 or SMART because I tried
the workaround above to no effect and I also simply disabled SMART in
the BIOS to no effect. I still get the ata errors in dmesg as before.

Although it may not be significant/relevant, note that right after I
installed Lucid A2 I also updated the firmware on my Crucial 128 GB SSD
model CT128M225 from 1819 to 1916 which seems to help with perf issues
users of Win7 etc reported - it now has active GC along with TRIM.

I will now also post on the forums.crucial.com about these ata errors in
dmesg and see if they can do anything about it.

Having bacula-console started I am told a connection is established. But there
is not output at all! Testing against a system not having bacula-director
running, I am immediately told:

[Bug 506455] Re: can't catch drag the document with the mouse

2010-01-16 Thread Jérôme
Maybe an other solution would be the solution used by Google Earth :
click with the mouse on a virtual joystick. The more you move the mouse
pointer from the initial position, the quicker the document moves in the
oposite way. When you come back to the initial position or release the
mouse button, then the move stops.

Public bug reported:

Over the last few weeks I have update from xubuntu 8.04
LTS8.109.049.10 the step from 9.04 to 9.10 has introduced and error
message at login which stops the keyboard working and I am unable to
login at the console. I am able to ssh into the machine to get command
line access but unable to fix this problem. There were no errors during
upgrade and I accepted the maintainer’s version of files where
appropriate to ensure a smooth upgrade or OS and apps.

Re: [Bug 444674] Re: Mouse behaves strange on clicking in graphical environment

2010-01-16 Thread Rob Plant
Same for me - single left click works correctly again but I have lost all
features: pad scrolling, cannot adjust pointer speed/acceleration etc. But
still an improvement overall :)

I cannot confirm the loss of middle click. It's still working for me by
clicking both buttons, but touchpad-scroll is definitely gone.

Status in “xserver-xorg-input-mouse” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: xorg

Since upgrading from Jaunty to Karmic, I'm experiencing a strange mouse
behaviour. Mouse clicks are not always interpreted correctly. Most of the
time, clicking once on application icons, links etc. seems to be interpreted
as holding the left mouse button down to draw the icon link etc. to a new
location. Same behaviour with window sliders. Clicking once, the mouse often
seems to interprete one single click as click and hold. As a consequence,
the slider is moved on moving the mouse.
To release the mouse from click and hold a right mouse click seems to
 help.
Often, it is also that trying to close an application highlights the x
button on the title bar, but the click is not recognized.

Sometimes (about 50% of the time), the mouse seems to be working normally.
However, working with this malfunction is very annoying.
This behaviour is related to the trackpoint, only! Mousepad as well as
external mouse are behaving as expected.

[Bug 508387] [NEW] Untranslatable help text: Boot methods for special ways of using this system

2010-01-16 Thread David Planella
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

In the bootloader help screen the following text cannot be translated
(see screenshot):

Boot methods for special ways of using this system

Searching for this string on the template in Launchpad returns only a
similar string, but the above one is not in the template (unless
'system' is what gets substituted for ${MEDIA_TYPE}):

https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/debian-
installer/+pots/debian-installer-
help/ca/+translate?batch=10show=allsearch=boot+methods

As I see ${MEDIA_TYPE} appearing again, this might be related to bug
