[Bug 782617] [NEW] Adding an Open package... option to the menu File.

2011-05-14 Thread negora
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: software-center

It's not bug but a request. I know that you may open DEB packages if
Ubuntu Software Center is associated to the DEB mime type, just with a
double-click on the file. However, I believe that it would be desirable
to have such option from the Software Center menu itself.

Same problem here with NVidia prop. drivers. Worked fine in Maverick,
laggs terribly in Natty. Disabling vblank synchronization does not
resolve the problem.

(Strictly speaking, what lags is mouse movement. i.E. when I zoom in on
a video and don't move the mouse, everything is fine.)

[Bug 782561] Re: package fuse-utils 2.8.1-1.1ubuntu3.1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2011-05-14 Thread Ubuntu QA's Bug Bot
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 691985 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/691985

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, the package installation error message
that you have received is actually a failure with lzma and a generic one
at that. The following steps may help resolve the issue. Please
execute the following command, as it will clear your package cache, in a
terminal:

sudo apt-get clean

Then try performing the update again as this may resolve your issue. We
plan to make lzma errors more informative and that work is being tracked
in bug 691985 which I will mark this a duplicate of.

Not sure if it's related or simply common knowledge - the WD EcoGreen

eight seconds smartctl in rc.local does lower the Load_Cycle_Count
but does not fully help. There is a linux version of wdidle3 that also
did not help much - so, there are still configurations after years with

[Bug 782625] [NEW] lubuntu 11.04

2011-05-14 Thread Matthias Hunstig
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ubiquity

I am using a rather old laptop, Toshiba L10-154, Celeron M with 512 MB
RAM. The hard disk has several partitions. One of them has Linux Mint
xfce 201104, so the laptop is basically linux-compatible.

I booted from the official Lubuntu 11.04 disc and selected German as
the language:

- When I start live mode, I end up with a command line. No errors, but not GUI
either. I got the hint to try startx, that leaves me with some error messages.
- When I choose the direct install, everything looks fine, but the installer
crashes during Sprachpakete werden installiert (language packages are being
installed).

I re-burned the iso, the behaviour stayed the same.

I would attach /var/log/syslog and /var/log/partman if I knew how to do
get them out of the computer from the command line. Unfortunately, I am
not. Can you give me directions how to do it?

[Bug 776117] Re: Banshee crash with coverflow enabled

2011-05-14 Thread krisgesling
I'm also running 11.04 (with all updates) and Banshee 2.0.0-2ubuntu1

Every time I install banshee-extension-clutterflow Banshee won't get
past a completely grey window and I have to force quit, as soon as I
remove the package again it's fine.

Was this the other bug report you were talking about?
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=646150

Would a dmesg output help?

Not having coverflow doesn't really bother me but I'm happy to help
where I can.

[Bug 771788] Re: nVidia driver activated and apparently being used but reported as not being used by jockey-gtk

2011-05-14 Thread steve taylor
Bearing in mind that it's early days for Unity, it's as well to remember that
new
builds are tested in the wild on us. Only then can they be 'completed'.

Gnome 3, maybe, should be the main development with Unity being a spin off
build
for those who have the kit. For me at least I just want an OS that I can work
on.
I don't want to be worried that every time I shut down that I may not be able
to
boot up again nor have to spend hours with workarounds and fixes.

It might even help if there was an updating list of working cards to refer to.
So if the worst happens (nothing) it would be possible to go get another card.
There is a tension between forging ahead technically (probably touch screen)
and being sensitive to users with old kit.

So far as I can see tested cards (which you probably have seen) from
another posting

ATI cards: Radeon 7500, Radeon 9250, Radeon 9500, Radeon 9600, Radeon X300,
Radeon X1600, Radeon HD 2600.
NVIDIA cards: TNT/Vanta, GeForce 2MX, GeForce 3, GeForce 4MX, GeForce FX 5200,
GeForce FX 5500, GeForce 6200, GeForce 6800, GeForce 7600, GeForce 8600,
GeForce 8800.
Intel cards: 865 ('Extreme Graphics'), 915 ('GMA 900'), 945 ('GMA 950'), 965
('GMA X3100').
Others: SiS 661, SiS 760, S3 UniChrome, Matrox G400, S3 ProSavage.

Still sketchy then.

[Bug 782496] Re: boinc crashes with *** buffer overflow detected *** on startup

Hi,

boinc always crashes when it starts; I can provide my /var/lib/boinc-
client dir if this is needed to reproduce.

I've installed boinc-dbg now and ran boinc in gdb. Looking at the stack
backtrace the problem seems to be related to long paths inside the .wine
directory (didn't even know boinc uses wine):

2011-05-14 Thread Fabio Marconi
Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

installed the nvidia-173 drivers by default. They worked fine, but I
decided to try the nvidia-current (which I had used before with the
previous install) and used Jockey to switch. This made Jockey install a
new xorg.conf without the EnableBrightnessControl option. On reboot the
keyboard brightness keys did therefore not work, I had to add the option
to xorg.conf again and restart X.

I am having the same problem. It just wont scrobble to LastFM, no matter

remove the application from LastFM and start the whole process again, it
still fails.

I'm not sure this translation is the issue entirely.

[Bug 728161] Re: Laptop subwoofer is not functional on ASUS G73JH

2011-05-14 Thread Len_C
I recently purchased an ASUS G73JH laptop and installed ubuntu 11.04 64bit

Unfortunately subwoofer doesn't work.
I don't have any alsa driver overrides installed.
It would be very gratifying if the problem could be solved.

I've attached a zip.file (alsa.zip), containing following files:

other files:

[Bug 782637] [NEW] Desktop is not locking automaticaly when there is seahorse prompt for wifi password

2011-05-14 Thread krzlew
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

I'm using Unity interface with new Ubuntu 11.04 (64 bit version). I've
set up automatic login without password prompt and after boot I'm
prompted for password to unlock seahorse (in order to login to my wifi
network). I can leave computer for any time and screen is not getting
blocked by gnome-screensaver. But when I fill the password and unlock
seahorse, screen gets instantly blocked by screensaver.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Use autologin (however this issue may be present also without autologin - I
havent' checked it) and different password for seahorse than for user login to
system.
2. Boot computer with wifi turned on
3. After booting there should be prompt for password from seahorse
4. Wait
5. Screen doesn't get locked

Expected result:
Screen is locked after some timeout.

then I'm still misunderstanding your comment #50.

Sorry, please help me become unconfused :)

[Bug 768616] Re: Ubuntu 11.04: Inconsistent shadows in right-click context menus

2011-05-14 Thread Vasilache Anton Ciprian
I can also confirm this bug.No right click shadows in nautilus.
Running Ubuntu 11.04 with Nvidia proprietary drivers.
In the past I would apply one of the following configurations from this thread
in order to solve this problem,

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1521911

but these do not seem to work anymore.

[Bug 782646] [NEW] ureadahead creates unwanted pack files (tmpfs, encrypted partitions)

2011-05-14 Thread pberndt
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: ureadahead

On my system, ureadahead created pack files for
- /var/* (I use tmpfs for /var/lock, /var/run and /var/tmp)
- /home (Which is especially bad, since my /home is encrypted and thus security
is compromised)

Of course, most file names stored in home.pack are pretty predictable,
so attackers don't gain much by knowing home.pack. Still, I'd prefer if
this file was not present..

Please
- Extend ureadahead with the ability to ignore certain directories (sth.
similar to /etc/updatedb.conf?)
- Ignore dm-crypt'ed partitions by default

ProblemType: Bug

[Bug 782646] Re: ureadahead creates unwanted pack files (tmpfs, encrypted partitions)

2011-05-14 Thread pberndt
I just noticed Bug #559525 already addresses the /var/log problem and
Bug #582102 already asks for a configurable ignore-list.

Still, I leave this bug open, since the problem with encrypted /home is
security related.

[Bug 728745] Re: [nvidia, 7300, 7400] display freeze when using unity desktop

2011-05-14 Thread anibal-sanchez
I was in way to setup the Nouveau experimental 3D driver (#73) . but I've
found unity-2d is working OK with NVIDIA recommended drivers.

sudo apt-get install unity-2d

unity-2d is not so fancy, but it works, it has lower reqs, and games
also work.

Thanks,
Anibal

Re: [Bug 647404] Re: Udev worker error during boot worker [XX] did not accept message -1 (Connection refused), kill it

2011-05-14 Thread Lawrence H. Bulk
A few weeks before the release of 11.04, there was evidently an update which
caused at least part of the problem to cease. I still saw the 10.04
background on the login screen (which switched immediately to the 10.10
background once I had logged in), but the udev message no longer appeared.

I won't go into my reasons for doing this but, rather than try a network
upgrade on this particular computer (Asus Eee PC 1000/Linux, formerly with
Asus' proprietary distro but replaced with Ubuntu last year), I decided to
'wipe' (with DBAN) and completely reinstall Ubuntu (with 11.04).

I have very few programs on this computer; my wife and I use it when
traveling to get e-mail, listen to internet radio stations, and so forth.

It has two hard drives, both SSDs - 8 GB (primary) and 32 GB (secondary).
(Why Asus made it this way I cannot understand; until you really get to
understand how to coordinate the two drives, it can be a real pain.)

The 'wiping' process took a couple of hours; reinstallation of Ubuntu took
only a half-hour and the configuration to our tastes took another hour.

Now everything works perfectly. I recommend that anyone who is annoyed by
this udev message (or who is having some other problems) consider wiping and
reinstalling.

It has certainly worked for me.

[Bug 578506] Re: [Kernel] ACPI: EC: input buffer is not empty, aborting transaction

2011-05-14 Thread rloth
@Pedro Carrasco : perhaps your directory structure is not exactly what
the patch expects.

You might use the alternate patch syntax:
patch /pathto/originalfile /pathto/patchfile

In my case i didn't apply the omnibook patch, because I have another laptop
model : samsung r719

NB : Amazingly, when I boot in a (non patched) natty live cd the laptop
works fine, and it also works in windows. But when I install natty the
problem reappears *on the second boot*

So I used the ec.c patch from comment 66 in
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14733
(the recommended one for 2.6.38) Unfortunately it didn't really work!

Sure, I don't get flooded with the EC input buffer message any more and at last
I can boot, but many other things are broke:
  - unexpected remounts
  - xorg problems
  - keyboard malfunction
  - all similar issues to those that had been described for maverick in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/610055

I'm wondering if these are separate problems that just suddenly appear
because the system actually boots, or if they are connected to the
original thing. I suspect the latter because i get similar behaviour
with noacpi option at boot and non patched kernel.

Btw, I tried the patch successively on both the generic-pae and
generic config, it's the same problem in both.
