Reviewing your log files attached to this bug report it seems that a package failed to install due to a segmentation fault in the application being used for the package installation process. Unfortunately, this bug report isn't very useful in its current state and a crash report would be much more useful. Could you try recreating this issue by enabling apport to catch the crash report 'sudo service apport start force_start=1' and then trying to install the same package again? - Updating - The problem came back today - the VM was running OK for more than 72 hours - and then the connectivity with the gateway was lost again. Looking Martin's post #132, I was seeing some packets being dropped by being incorrect. Applied the ethtool fix and also changed the driver to e1000 and going to monitor it. I just upgraded from 12.04 to 14.04, in the upgrade process the fix of adding radeon.nomodestet=1 at grub bootline got lost, and the vertical colored stripes came back when booting up. However, it seems that it seems it happened not as often. I wish that the problem could be fixed. My laptop is a Dell INspiron 1501. I read in the list that it has related to Unity? Is it true? I believe that this happens because the config (/proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/all/accept_ra_defrtr) says to accept a default route, and you have one specified in /etc/network/interfaces, and therefore the advertised default route fails to get added to the routing table. It would be a good thing if the logged error (1) said what it was trying to add as the default route, and (2) was rate limited, and (3) pointed at accept_ra_defrtr Having ifup turn off accept_ra_defrtr when it adds a default route might be a good thing, too. OK. 3.16.0-29 seems to be much better, but I just experienced the same symptoms as for the logs (I believe) referred to in comment 77 above; specifically, the machine lost association with the AP and could not reestablish. Removing and reinserting the iwlmvm and iwlwifi modules fixed the problem and I was able to reassociate (using Network Manager) immediately.
