If you're having a problem with X starting, then you can switch to a
console (CTRL+ALT+F1), after X has failed to start, then copy the logs
required to a safe location so you can upload them with the working

So, what did I say that was not helpful?

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Examining the information you have given us, this does
not appear to be a bug report so we are closing it and converting it to
a question in the support tracker. We appreciate the difficulties you
are facing, but it would make more sense to raise problems you are
having in the support tracker at https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu if
you are uncertain if they are bugs. For help on reporting bugs, see

[Bug 302749] Re: gnome-terminal crash

2008-11-27 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or
challenging to deal with as a ".crash" file. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable
apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus
and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report
you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using
/usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a
terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will
automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more
efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding.

2008-11-27 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How
to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 249751] Re: [needs-packaging] LVE - Linux Video Editor

2008-11-27 Thread Chris Coulson
To me, the sentence "there doesn't seem to be any support / further
development on LVE" translates to "LVE is pretty much dead", and it
doesn't really get much clearer than that.

The links to what seems like the only 2 non spam-bot threads on their
forums don't really prove anything. The only response to the first
thread was the same statement basically saying that LVE is unmaintained,
and the second thread was just someone trying to advertise their own
library (spam)

Ideally, packages in the Ubuntu repositories should be actively
maintained upstream so that we benefit from bug fixes etc. While it may
sometimes be acceptable to package an unmaintained project, these cases
should be simple and mature projects that are going to be low-
maintenance for the Ubuntu community. This will be neither, so I'm going
to close this bug report for now. Feel free to reopen it if you can find
someone to volunteer to maintain it and provide bug fixes etc.

[Bug 303059] Re: Samba segfaults four-five times a day on Ubuntu Server (both hardy and intrepid)

2008-11-28 Thread Chris Coulson

[Bug 265141] Re: Firefox shuts down, totally and without warning. When restarted it has "work offline" checked - a real pain

2008-11-28 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make

report is either missing or challenging to deal. Please follow these
instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can
be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. Once you have done this,

If you don't see a crash notification and you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu

Daniel,

I don't mind re-doing the diff to remove the versions from the build-

virtual package, which gets provided by libcurl4-gnutls-dev in my build.

[Bug 296209] Re: opening a mounted camera folder does not show scroll bars

2008-11-28 Thread Chris Coulson
I can reproduce this issue quite reliably.

1) Open a Nautilus window and navigate to a folder that contains enough files
for the vertical scrollbar to appear.
2) Open a new tab, and navigate to a folder where there aren't enough files for
the scrollbar to appear.
3) Navigate quickly back to the first tab and note that the vertical scrollbar
doesn't appear.
4) Hit refresh, and the scrollbars magically appear :)

[Bug 301737] Re: Can't access tty

2008-11-29 Thread Chris Coulson
TBH, this could be a kernel, usplash or Xorg issue. I don't think it is
video driver related as we all use different video drivers. Up until
today, Jaunty has been using the Intrepid kernel (and this problem
doesn't exist in Intrepid), so I'm starting to think it's not a kernel
problem. Usplash hasn't changed yet in Jaunty either. However, I've
spent a couple of hours selectively downgrading packages to Intrepid
versions (including xorg) to see if I can spot which package introduces
the problem. This hasn't been too successful yet though :(

2009-05-12 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we can't fix it because your description
didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful to read "How
to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Bug 375369] Re: crashes on Maximise Window in certain situations

2009-05-12 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

[Bug 375623] Re: machine check exception after kernel update

2009-05-12 Thread Chris Coulson
As pointed out by the error on the screen, this is not a software bug.
I've ran your MCE code through mcelog, and this is what it says:

ch...@chris-desktop:~/Desktop$ mcelog --k8 --ascii < your_error
mcelog: Cannot open /dev/mem for DMI decoding: Permission denied
HARDWARE ERROR. This is *NOT* a software problem!

[Bug 375917] Re: Cheese should be dependend on gnome-icon-theme

2009-05-13 Thread Chris Coulson
Thank you for your bug report? Which version are you using?

Cheese shouldn't depend on any particular icon theme to work. Rather, it should
ship it's own fallback icons in hicolor if it behaves badly without them.
